Text Run To The Darkness [One Shot]

Recommended Posts

Introductory note: This is a little ol' One Shot type thing I just put together, it takes its cues from a set of lyrics from a song by Live, which is called "Run to The Water" in case you were interested. Other than that, it is my envision of the scene from Kingdom Hearts during End Of The World where Sora returns to Destiny Islands. So I hope ya'll enjoy my redux of that chapter of the story. Feel free to comment / ask questions as always if you like :)

Run To The Darkness

The large brown door swung shut slowly after Sora, Donald and Goofy had walked through the open doorway, it closed slowly as if some mysterious force were slowly pulling it closed. What Sora saw in front of him was instantly recognisable, though shocking. “Is this... Is this my island?!” Sora said to himself.

Sora walked forward from the doorway and looked around at his surroundings, everything was just the way he could remember it, how long had it been since he last saw this beautiful island? Weeks, months perhaps, to Sora it felt like it had been a lifetime.

And yet the island looked as peaceful as always, the calm breeze swept through the trees with their shinning green leaves and branches moving softly with the wind. The ocean surrounding the island; it was also as magnificent as always. The sun beat in reflection from the blue water, the waves gently caressed the shore line, exploding on impact with the off-set island to the west and the wooden pier to the east.

As Sora walked around the island, he began to slowly reach a realisation that this was indeed the island which he had been on, during that fateful night. And so with this he began to search for any of his friends. Selphie, Waka and Tidus, surely he would be able to find them here. Maybe even Riku or Kairi were here.

As Sora explored, he decided to head towards and check that off-island that was connected to his home island, it was famous for its growth of the papou fruit, a star shaped brightly coloured fruit that when shared according to the rumours would tie together the fates of the two consumers.

As he approached the island, suddenly it turned into a shadowy dark figure of itself “What the?!” Sora was stunned, and suddenly his vision was completely gone, all he could see was darkness, he wasn’t even sure if his eyes were open or closed, all he could do was wait.

Sora?” spoke a soft distant voice, which he listened to in his head. And a single light floated in front of him. He recognised the voice though.

Mom?!” Sora said in shock but the hope was very clear in his voice.

The light spread into the shape of a middle aged woman, she stood in front of Sora. She had long, straight brown hair and blue eyes.

Sora, our home has been swallowed by the darkness. Only you can set things right, and return our lives to normal.” She spoke calmly to her son, as if clearly instructing and trusting.

But...I...” Sora was struggling for words, he knew he still faced an evil far greater than anything he had faced previously.

You can do it, Sora. Just run! And don’t look back. Just run.” Her last word echoed as she faded away from vision “Run...Run...Run..

Suddenly Sora was back on the island, the papou fruit island had disappeared.

A piece of paper was underneath his foot, he reached down and picked it up, written on it was simply the word run. “Hey, Jiminy? Put this note into the journal.

You got it Sora!” Jiminy replied excitedly and he copied the note into the journal “Run.” He wrote it in black ink with his pen and closed the journal, leaving a slight bend in the top of the page for easy access later on.

And now Sora continued to explore the island “Run... But run where?” He thought to himself. And he tried to remember his past for any hints; he remembered how he and Riku would have running races through the obstacle course. Maybe this was it, and so he headed toward the wooden door that separated that part of the island. He then reached for the door handle, but the entire door disappeared in darkness just like the island had before it.

This World has been connected...” Spoke another voice in Sora’s head, this time it was a deep male voice, Sora recognised it, it was the voice of that mysterious hooded man who had spoke to him in the secret place. Maybe that was a clue, perhaps what he was looking for was in there.

Tied to the darkness...” the voice’s recital of his speech to Sora echoed. And now the sand was contaminated with darkness, each step the three took left a small trail of dark ooze which sprinkled into the air, akin to stepping in a small puddle.

What was that?!” Yelled Goofy.

“Huh?” Donald squawked

Sora’s head began to suddenly ache, the pain was so excruciating that his eyes were almost watering, he slammed the keyblade into the ground in agony and the darkness splashed up, but it froze mid-air.

Sora examined the liquid, and in the darkness another light emerged.

This time the light took the shape of a small girl, about Sora’s age and before too long it was clearly Kairi.

Run to the water, Sora. Run to the water.” She said but then quickly vanished, and the darkness splashed back into the sand.

Sora regained his senses and before he could speak to Jiminy, he was interrupted by the tiny chronicler. “Sora, the most strange thing just happened, our note now read as follows. Run to the water, it says.

Thanks Jiminy.” Sora said, and he lifted his keyblade out from the sand. He turned around and headed to the water fall by the secret place entrance.

Trees started to vanish in the darkness, “Soon to be completely eclipsed.” The mysterious voice continued.

“Come on guys, let’s go, to the waterfall!” Sora said excitedly to his companions.

“We’re right behind you Sora.” Goofy answered the key bearer. “Right Donald?”

Right. All for one, and one for all!” Donald answered.

The three of them arrived at the waterfall. As Sora peered into the dark and lumpy water, he noticed something floating atop of the flowing liquids. He didn’t dare touch the mysterious pool with his hands, instead he dipped his keyblade in, and prized the piece of paper out like the fishermen on his island used to when fishing.

Sora squeezed the liquid from the paper on one side was a note “And find me there.” And the other side, a drawing of his former friend, Riku.

Run to the water, and find me there” The note in the journal now read.

A meaningless effort!” The deep voice boomed across the land, as the island began shaking, like a volcano about to erupt after thousands of years of build up activity. “One who knows nothing can understand nothing...” And darkness once again shrouded over the Destiny Islands.

Sora awoke inside the secret place, the cracks of darkness spread across the walls, and the chalked drawings had turned into heartless symbols. Sora drew his keyblade, and fought off the heartless in the room. Each time his keyblade struck one, and it disappeared in a flash of dark material, the cracks in the walls would shut a little more, and the room slowly turned back to how he remembered it.

He defeated each heartless with a combination of attacks and spells he had learned over his travels, he has become so powerful now that the heartless were no longer as much trouble for him, although he was by now getting sick of fighting them continuously.

Once he defeated the final heartless, he was blinded by an intense light, and when his vision returned he was back outside the secret place, the trees on the island had fallen, and the darkness had cracked through the island, which was now entirely floating on a sea of darkness rather than water. Sora knew now, he had to save this world from the darkness or it would be lost forever.

The note in Jiminy’s journal had changed again. It now read “Run to the water, and find me there, burnt to the core but not broken.” Was the now complete sentence.

And Sora knew, finally he understood.

He looked over to the distance and could see a figure standing looking out over the ocean of darkness. There was no doubt, this was Riku, but not as Sora knew him.

He ran to the water, to fight off the darkness once and for all, and save his friends.
