Protoman 1,974 Posted October 15, 2011 Thats funny because when im in a chating with her, she always correct my miss- spelling her or -Ventus- would correct me all the time. Its embarassing. plus, she even corrects herself. Grammar freak I correct myself if I think that my spelling is tedious to read. Other than that, if I correct you, it's because It's either:A. Funny B. Unreadable C. Obscure 1 Kinode reacted to this

waytothexdawnx 1,159 Posted October 15, 2011 i dont think its THAT big of a deal. yea, u gotta use proper grammar for school, work, life but my god this is a GAMING FORUM. this isnt school or work. i happen to have a job and i go to school. i type proper then but more than half the time im on here through my phone, not my computer, so typing a long response is a PITA on a phone haha but if people are gonna get bent out of shape about it, i find it a little ridiculous. but i do agree, u should be able to READ what people are saying. i didnt use proper grammar, but its clear what im saying. iT dUNt lOOK LyK DiiS. so, i dont think its that big of a deal. as long as u get ur point/opinion/discussion/topic/conversation across and its readable, its all good. no worries. just make sure ur spelling and grammar is good in school and work. but for a gaming forum... i think its ok to be chill about mistakes. AnHeiressofaSOLDIER 358 Posted October 15, 2011 I think good spelling and grammer should always be encouraged. I can be lenient, and I don't mind text talk, but it has gotten to a point where people don't know how to write properly anymore. When you do something often, it becomes a habit. I don't know how many times my teachers had to get on people for typing things like, "2nite" in their essays. And they weren't trying to! They just automatically did it. In that case, I think it's better to practice good grammer, don't you? Because you need it for important things everyday. Another contributing factor to this problem is how rarely teachers enforce it now a days. I think it should be taught seriously, and then you should lose some marks if you do it wrong. As bad as it sounds, if you get away with your mistakes, how are you going to learn? How are you going to know it's not the correct way? I know my grammer's not perfect, but I try my best. And a lot of the problem derives from how little my teachers taught me. Anyway, grammer and spelling really should be stressed. Mainly so people can understand you. We were going over the misplacing of a comma in my Essay Writing class one year, and such simple things can cause huge mistakes. For example, in this one sentence, a simple comma malfunction made it sound like someone who had been beheaded was walking around afterwards. Obviously that wasn't the case, and putting the comma in the right place made the sentence make a lot more sense. I think it was saying the guy was allowed one last time to walk around before it happened or something. So, yes, while I won't tear anyone down for their typings, you should still go ahead and try to write as well as you can. You don't want to make terrible errors. Like how a newspaper accidentally said a lot more people survived a mine cave in than actually did. I forget what year it was, but it was recent-ish. Those families were so upset when they thought 24 of the people survived rather than 2 (I don't think that's anywhere near the right numbers, but as I don't remember, it's merely an example). I felt so terrible for them. What a nightmare that must have been... 2 TheApprenticeofKingMickey and Koko reacted to this
TheApprenticeofKingMickey 3,689 Posted October 15, 2011 HOW IS IT DISRESPECT? Because, I have an eleven year old sister and she complains about me grilling her for not spelling this or that correctly, and it's natural for someone your age to complain. When you're bit older, you won't be as lazy.

Always 309 Posted October 15, 2011 Meh, I gave up being a total grammar Nazi a long time ago, mostly because I had some close-ish friends who had terrible spelling and grammar, and every time I would try to correct them, even if it was only playfully, I would get shot down, and that was frustrating. I mean, I still wince whenever I see that people don't know the differences between "your" and "you're," "its" and "it's," "their," "they're," and "there," et cetera (and when people say "ek cetera!" >_<). However, I've learned that it's pointless to tell countless people on the Internet about their grammatical/spelling errors, because chances are that they won't care, or they'll at least act like they don't care. I prefer not to spend my time fighting a losing battle. Now, the only time I'll correct somebody is whenever I have a good indication that he or she actually cares about using good grammar, and I try to do so playfully to minimize that person's embarrassment or irritation. Therefore, I don't find good grammar to be extremely important on this site, but it is definitely appreciated, and gives me a better impression of the people who take the extra two seconds to use it. 1 Kinode reacted to this
Number XV 490 Posted October 15, 2011 Eh, I don't find grammar online to be that important. Still, it wouldn't hurt to at least try to use grammar.
TheApprenticeofKingMickey 3,689 Posted October 15, 2011 I think proper grammar, spelling and punctuation are important. I mean, so many people aren't using it properly that nobody can spell properly these days anymore. And in Canada, the government is pushing for high school students to relearn or redo grammar exercises in English all over again because they realize these teenagers can't punctuate or spell correctly anymore because of things like Twitter, Facebook and texting. It makes me concerned for the future of our societies and children. Is it really that difficult to move your finger three inches or more to put a period at the end of a sentence or press the shift or caps lock button to make a capital letter? I don't grill people on the internet but I don't approve of their awful typing skills either. It's just pure unwillingness and laziness to me. Also, English is my second language and I am able to communicate well. Not that there's anything wrong with someone else having more difficulty problems with proper spelling, ect. in other languages either. 1 Koko reacted to this
TheApprenticeofKingMickey 3,689 Posted October 15, 2011 I'M NOTHING LIKE THAT! Well, when you complain about spelling, grammar and punctuation you certainly seem that way. Especially why someone your age is on a site like this confounds me but that's your choice.

ssceles 134 Posted October 15, 2011 Grammar is one thing. Typos are another. Intentional chatspeak? That annoys me. I'll ignore how they typed and answer their question no matter what, so long as I can understand it. But I won't complain because I'm tired of wasting my time trying to encourage them not to type a child. I can't take someone seriously if they won't take the time to at least look mature. I understand all of us will occasionally toss in some lols and acronyms, for the fun of it, but it's just bad to do that to a complete stranger. It leaves a very bad first impression. =/ If you wanna add some silliness to your speech pattern, that's cool and all, but at least try and do it with capitalized starts of sentences and proper punctuation. I'd prefer all the appropriate letters exist in all your words, too. But I'm not going to waste my time complaining. It's your own choice to look like an idiot, who am I to criticize your decision? 2 Always and Kaiso reacted to this
Think Pink 1,967 Posted October 15, 2011 Occasional mistakes in grammar such as forgetting a comma or something doesn't bother me too much. What gets on my nerves is people who use no grammar at all, or abbreviate words like saying "ppl" instead of "people", ect. That's being lazy, and it's not a habit you want to be starting. Exceptions are obviously made for those with special circumstances (like people who are writing in English when it's not their first language). The majority of this community is capable of typing decently, though, so theoretically there shouldn't even be a problem.

DragonMaster 1,166 Posted October 15, 2011 As long as I can read it, I don't really care. It would be nice if everyone could use proper capitalization, and punctuation, but it just isn't worth brutalizing someone for... Unless of course their post is like this: "lul!!1!!!!!111!! thats so funny i never wuld ahve sen tht cming so wht r u goin to do tonite i think i might go nadg get somethin to eet @ mcdonlds but i dont relly liek there fud much caus its so greesy but whatevr anyway l8r peice out" By the way, it took me longer to write that bad "sentence" than it did to write the rest of the post. 1 waytothexdawnx reacted to this

Koko 3,944 Posted October 15, 2011 This thread is fine where it is, beforehand it was in KH section which didn't make any sense. The only category it fit in was here. So yeah stop posting about it (: Anyways, you should practice proper grammar and spelling when you can and not use text speak because it becomes a habit and whata are you going to do in college when you're writing an essay and it's full of 'u', 'ppl', '2morrow' and as well as missing commas, apostrophes, and ect.
