Nick Sideris 1,551 Posted February 23, 2014 I look at things like the protesters in Kiev right now and unlike my parents and teachers talking about how awful it is, I look at that stuff and think wow, I want to be a part of that. I mean like the chills I get looking at pictures of thousands of protesters flooding the streets and changing things and just wow. I know everyone else is grateful not to be a part of that stuff, but I would be thrilled to be a part of that. (less of an opinion, more of a different viewpoint I suppose?) Oh , I don't think you would like to be with them ..... Personally I think age doesn't define maturity. Ghost 1,857 Posted February 23, 2014 May or may not be an unpopular opinion idk. I literally do not understand the difference between sex and gender. Not trolling, I just don't get it. Would anyone mind explaining to me (preferably in a PM or IM to avoid clutter in this topic) so that I can get it? So far everyone I've asked on different websites has yelled at me and taken it as a personal offense for some reason. Like I was never taught this in preschool, I don't know what it means. 1 DragonMaster reacted to this

As far as I know, sex = biology. Your chromosomes and/or the thingy that is/isn't hanging off your crotch/chest. Basically what your DNA and body says. The clinical or, I guess you can say, "objective" way to view it. gender = societal constructs associated with one's sex. It can be as encompassing as sexism, or as minor as pink being associated with girls. You can consider it more subjective and "artificial." Basically, what your behavior/attitude says. 3 RoxSox, Ghost and DragonMaster reacted to this
Queen Tery 4,591 Posted February 23, 2014 (edited) Personally I think age doesn't define maturity. People who disregard younger people's opinion "just because they are younger" are rude I think it depends on the situation and the person at hand. I use to feel the same way when I was younger, but as you get older and experience more you come to find that a lot of younger people are inexperienced and immature. I'm not saying younger people are incapable of being mature, but experience DOES define maturity and the older you get the more chances you have at experiencing things. So older people tend to be more mature. Edited February 23, 2014 by Queen Tery 7 Dracozombie, Jilly Shears, Demyx. and 4 others reacted to this

MyDixieRect 2,061 Posted February 25, 2014 I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this but it really does annoy me how people are so quick to cry "depression!" whenever something goes on in their life. Yeah I get that you're sad, possibly very sad because of blahblah but I really doubt you've suffered the persistent sense of hopelessness and sadness that depression really brings, the depravity of enjoyment that your favorite activities once brought you or the lack of care you have towards yourself and the damage that itself does to your loved ones, especially those that say "Oh I'll be back in a month or so when I've sorted myself out!" as if you just know that it'll all be over then that your feelings will sort themselves out because if so then that's not depression. Naturally this does not apply to everyone. 10 Noobles, Demyx., Ceriraye and 7 others reacted to this

Naturally this does not apply to everyone. Not necessarily giving you hate, but I do have to disagree...to an extent. I mean the word "depression" is tossed around so much nowadays and like many words, it's almost lost his meaning. I'm not offended by it to be honest since I guess I'm not sensitive in THIS area, but I'm wure we've all heard our fair share of:"Ugh, I'm SO depressed today my bf of two weeks broke up with me!""Ew, what are you, bipolar?"The sad thing is these terms and many others are tossed around so often that, like I take before, they've lost their meanings. A couple years ago I was diagnosed with depression/manic depression/bipolar (idfk anymore too many terms (anxiety too but it's not as frequent in me) I thought it went away and I was doing GREAT for an entire year but around September, I began to get sad again. It's been going on for months, I've talked to people and I honestly don't know what to believe now but they all said the same thing - that depression can resurface.I know a lot of people use the words and they might not ever feel as hopeless, worthless, or suicidal as someone with clinical depression...but eh, words and language change. It IS a mental disorder but I don't think the people who use the term mean any harm, really. Also, you (almost unless they ratchetttt lol) never know someone's story, perspective...their entire thoughts.Depression does resurface and different people can have different uh...patterns..Of it, I suppose. Though honestly I think that people should not say "I have clinical depression" unless checking up a few sources (doctor or someone you love and trust are the best options possible, but of course research on your own can help give you a more general idea) so that if someone IS genuinely severely depressed, they can get some help! tl;dr - I do agree with you that some of the people who toss terms of serious illness around freely really shouldn't, but language changes and it's unfortunate that depression is often dismissed as "less serious" because so many people use it so often. It can't be helped though but you actually reminded me that a lot of mental illnesses are ignored and thought of as unimportant! Many of these illnesses should have some sort of awareness thing... 2 Lalalablah and Paranoia reacted to this

Naturally this does not apply to everyone. I do understand where you are coming from, though in my opinion the word "depression" in the common tongue just refers to a lower emotional state. Which the people making those posts have. Though it does sound like you are describing the symptoms of a major depressive episode. And yes a lot of their symptoms usually match Dysthymia levels of depression and not full out DEPRESSION. If you are talking about in a more technical sense. Though what I will say, is that if they feel they need to go to get their head back together, they should go to get their head back together. Ghost 1,857 Posted February 27, 2014 I genuinely believe that any math classes beyond the basics should not be required classes. What good comes from an entire class asking "why are we learning this, when are we ever going to use this, the job I want for the future does NOT require this so why do I have to pretend to learn it?" Like seriously schools need to stop pretending that every single person will need this. If someone is interested (yep plenty of people really do love math, me not being one of them) then they're more inclined to sign up for, pass, and enjoy a class. Honestly I feel like this should start in highschool. Save this alegebra, geometry and calculus stuff either for people in highschool who sign up for it, and then if someone does want to go into a profession that requires any of those classes they can take it in college (it should be offered). This is never going to happen I know, but I just think it would make sense. You could argue this for ANY subject, but at least in english you read and expand your vocabulary, in history you actually learn some pretty cool things (some moreso than others), in science classes come on don't deny it's a broad field and you're bound to find one of them interesting, and then foreign languages at least open you up to something whether it's a language you'd like to continue after school or not, and show you what it's like to study another language. I just find any math beyond the basics to survive in the real world to be pointless. So long as I can count money, tell the time, and know thay 2+2=fish, that's all I need. 2 Alicia Maddox and Ceriraye reacted to this

So long as I can count money, tell the time, and know thay 2+2=fish, that's all I need. I know this is your opinion, and you are putting it here because you think it is unpopular, but I want to share mine. While I agree that most people will never have any use for calculus, but I will argue for both basic geometry and algebraic manipulations. Geometry, all has to do with shapes. Though you learn useful things like area, volume, and how to calculate them. Useful for lots of construction jobs, gardening, farming, interior design, and much more.Algebra, is really in my opinion the final part of the foundation of all mathematics. Just the simple idea that you can manipulate both sides of an equation and it being equal is extremely useful especially for sciences. Chemistry, Physics, Biology (to some extent), and various other sciences have applications for algebra and a lot of their work can be understood with just what is taught in algebra courses. Some random person on why algebra is useful in real life from yahoo answers. Robbo_op_98 answered 7 years agoActually you use algebra all the time. The is no reason why you should get into long compicated answers for this question. Here are some straight up easy answers.1) When filling your car up with gas you can use a form of algebra. Lets say you only have $20.00 to spend on gas today and gas is $3.50 a gallon. How many gallons could you buy?Let x = # of gallons of gas3.50x=20.00x=5.71 gallons2) Lets say you need to buy a NEW XBox 360. You have $800 to spend on everything. You know a new system costs $400 and extra controller $40. Assuming a game costs $60 how many games could you get?Let x= the number of Games$800 = $400 + $40 +$60x800=460+60x360=60xx = 6 Games3) For the last one lets say you are all grown up now and have to move across country for a new job. Lets use Buffalo, NY to Sacramento, CA which is roughly 2500 miles of driving. How much money do you need to save for gas if the national average is $3.23/gallon.Let x = amount of money you need to save2500 = 3.23xx=$773.99There you go 3 simple examples of using algebra in the real life. In my opinion both Math and English (or just what ever is the native language of the region) are the most important subjects. Next important thing would have to be some sort of home ec class. (and yes another language could have many practical uses)History? People could live without knowing of the past, yes there are things you can learn from it. But they can learn similar things from just literature and fiction. Yes knowing something is "real" can make it more impactful, but there is nothing practical taught from history. Well not for the daily life of the average person.Well, I guess it is useful because of democracy, but what am I kidding people don't use sense when voting. But meh I don't want to argue against any class, I would rather argue for all the classes. 1 Lalalablah reacted to this

So long as I can count money, tell the time, and know thay 2+2=fish, that's all I need. The point behind math is far less obvious than learning english, history, and science. It's about the general ability to think logically, make decisions, and solve real life problems. It's kind of a "behind the scenes" learning. You're not directly learning anything in algebra, trigonometry, or calculus that you'd use in most jobs but you are learning how to solve problems using prior knowledge and the information put in front of you. Which is something a lot of jobs out there will do. 1 Lalalablah reacted to this
