Shana09 5,769 Posted December 16, 2013 Math is terrible: you never actually go : Ok... my garden is 10x10, and each seed can be 5 inches apart, and I have 300 seeds... F**k NO!!! You just plant the damn seeds! 90% of math is like this, and i'm sick of being forced to learn it. I think Math is incredibly useful since it allows you to develop abilities on how to solve a problem. Yeah you may think "well 2 + 2 isn't useful" but how about how what you do to get that 2 + 2 = 4? That is what is useful. To use your mind to solve problems you will face in real life whether its small or its a critical situation. Also in a numerical approach to how it will help in your modern life, knowing how to do simple calculations really do help when it comes to planning. As someone who created Pokémon Tournaments knowing that 8 x 2 = 16 and 16 is an even number that makes sure that everyone gets to battle helped with that. Baking and cooking also factors the amount of ingredients you put which also is Math. So yes, in my opinion, Math is extremely more useful than people think. It may be difficult, but thats the whole point, you are trying to put your mind to solve a problem. Its critical thinking. 8 Queen Tery, Jilly Shears, Think Pink and 5 others reacted to this

You just plant the damn seeds! 90% of math is like this, and i'm sick of being forced to learn it. Geometry based math is very important for construction, especially trigonometry. Engineering and architecture requires lots of mathematical equations usually having to do with forces.Accountants have to deal with numbers almost constantly.Statistician, even if you think they are useless, use math a whole lot.Scientists need to use statistics in experiments, to basically say "these results aren't just caused by random chance."Knowing your way around percentages is useful when buying and selling stuff. And like others have said, recommended planting distances are recommended for a reason. Also with proper spacing you can plant 576 seeds in that plot. (Only 529 if you are also making sure they are 5 inches away from the edge of the garden.) Now with that information you can plan if you want to give the seeds extra space or if you are wanting to get more seeds or plant other plants as well. (if you chose to grant extra space, the optimal distance would be around 6.55 inches away from the edge and each other.) Sure you might think that is useless, and who has time to measure distances for 300 seeds. But with commercial farming you need to know how to optimize your farm land for the best crop growth. And probably your tractors or what ever you plant with has a semi-precise seed placement system. Which could get those distances. But then again I could be wrong. 2 Shana09 and RoxSox reacted to this

Tigerruss 576 Posted December 16, 2013 This opinion must be very unpopular: I also just meant every stupid detail of math, like fractions and decimals, not the basic need~to~know stuff. Yes, you picked the right thread to post it in.I will give you that sometimes things are almost too well defined in math for the average person. Though in my opinion parts of a whole is an extremely useful concept for the average person to know.to know. And Converting a decimal to a fraction usually takes more effort than it is worth, unless if you can just have a calculator do it. (there are some pluses to fractions instead of decimals...sometimes.) And converting fractions to decimals is also useful, since sometimes real numbers are more useful than fractions. Though with converting fractions to decimals that is just a couple button presses on a calculator. And proofs may seem silly and pointless, but without them we would have a whole lot of false and nearly correct identities, equations, and theories. And teaching people to make proofs is good. Though I do admit it is quite painful.

Dracozombie 4,554 Posted December 16, 2013 That it is... but I'll survive. I hope writing majors don't need much math.... Writing majors don't need anymore than the minimum. I was able to stop at pre calculus, which is like algebra on hard mode. But you really shouldn't rule out math completely. No matter how annoying and painful it is, it's there for a reason, and I think you should have a decent grasp on it at least for the sake of things like finances. 1 Jilly Shears reacted to this

Tigerruss 576 Posted December 16, 2013 That it is... but I'll survive. I hope writing majors don't need much math.... Probably not much math (probably a single course), but if you intend to write fiction, some psychology classes may help "understand the mind" and have more "realistic" characters. Though you could probably study psychology online instead of actual courses, and look at different theories of personalities. Though if you want a degree in the arts (which writing falls under), depending on the college/university, you might need to take some foreign language courses. WTF, people? No one really wants to be dissed, even if their work could've been better. People need to zip it, and go do something else: like my grandma used to say: " If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." 1 griann reacted to this
