The Unpopular Opinions Thread

Recommended Posts

This is more of a musing than an opinion, since I'm not sure what to think.  The general rule for the Random forum is to not take it seriously, which is fine in concept.  It's a place to let loose and post whatever, a place running on sarcasm, irony, general absurdity and fun.  However, it seems odd we need to be constantly reminded of the rule.  "lol it's Random don't take it seriously" and posts of that nature seem to occur more than it should if the general behavior is self-evident.  The fact most of us don't follow it is evident in our self-awareness, with posts regarding the irony of how, yes, a lot of us actually do take Random seriously.  I'm not even sure why the "rule" is in effect since it's been demonstrated time and time again that the fact a post is in Random does not automatically exclude it from criticism and negativity.  Yes, I understand things like ridiculous claims, obviously fake news, and, well, random humor, but that's not what I mean.  I'm talking about things that people have legitimate opinions towards, often strong ones.  A joke that sounds funny to you may not sit well with others, and if it's in Random, a negative reaction to all but the most offensive things (anything political, for instance), is merely dismissed as butthurt.

To solidify my observations, I recently conducted an experiment by creating this thread: http://kh13.com/forum/topic/52569-bronies-need-to-grow-up/

It was in Random, obviously, and says this in regards to fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: "Seriously.  It's a show for little girls.  The men who like this thing need to get out of their basements and get laid, and stop being so creepy."  FYI, I'm a Brony myself, so of course I didn't mean it.  However, I created the thread knowing damn well what would happen.  It being in Random didn't stop people from (rightfully) criticizing the post--only one person didn't, and he may or may not have been playing along.  I'll bet the people who reacted negatively to the thread would, themselves, be criticized for taking something in Random seriously.  Even though there was no reason for why they shouldn't have taken it seriously.  I certainly didn't mean it when I created it, but how was anyone else supposed to know that?  The only way anyone would know I was full of crap is if they knew I'm a Brony, which isn't exactly common knowledge.  Irony and sarcasm fall flat when what's being said is what people out there actually say.  For that thread, I posted generic insults towards Bronies and watched what happened.  If the "don't take it seriously" rule was truly followed, you'd think everyone would have just played along, even the Bronies.  But nope, they reacted just as I expected, and as they should have.

People have strong opinions towards certain things.  Irony and jokes can be difficult to convey over the internet.  A funny joke to you might not sit well with others, and their negative reactions wouldn't necessarily be butthurt.  On the other hand, I do see people making mountains out of molehills in Random.  It's like some people just need to pick a fight, or they can't let something slide.  On the other other hand, even if they overreact (which can admittedly result in some lulz), their criticisms can be valid, especially where anything political is concerned.  Even opinions towards certain characters or games or anything people love/hate can generate strong responses, no matter where it's being posted.  A post being in Random does not automatically mean it shouldn't be taken seriously, or that it's ironic.  A brony-hater could've posted a thread like mine in Random and actually mean it--there's little way of telling I didn't mean it.

I guess what I'm getting at is that maybe the irony of "Heh, wow, we do take Random seriously.  lol" should be less ironic and more something we legitimately take into consideration.  Fun and games is great, which is what Random is all about, but that's not an excuse to say whatever the hell you want, under the assumption everyone will let it slide simply because it's in Random.  I think most of us already do, in the back of our minds, watch our words, but maybe a little more conscious awareness about it would do us some good.  Many of the locked threads I've seen some from Random (the other being Personal, for some understandable reasons), mainly because of people taking the "lol don't take it seriously" rule too far.  I don't frequent Random nearly as much as I used to these days, simply because of the attitude that negative reactions are dismissed out of the butthurt principle.

Or maybe I am just butthurt and there's not really a problem and I just wrote this friggin' long post for no reason.  Who knows?

we're talking about evolution in science and it really irks me that one girl in the class won't even listen to the teacher speak. She plugs her ears and makes this humming noise and complains about how stupid it is we have to learn evolution. I mean, even if you don't agree, it's school. You need to pay attention and try your bests on assignments and tests whether you believe it or not. (And I tried to explain to her that you can be Christian and believe in evolution like myself, but she refused to listen and said that was stupid and disrespectful to God) it just really bothers me that she can't even just pay attention for the sake of school.

whether you agree with something or not, it still doesn't hurt to just listen to the other POV (or at least to try to pass the class because hey if you're going into the medical profession biology is a really important class)

That's ridiculous owo

I mean my history teacher gets into small discussions about Christianity during some of his lessons, but that doesn't give me (or anyone else) the right to just close their mind off.

This.

Heck, I'm a young earth Creationist (shoot me, call me an idiot, I don't even care haha), but hearing different viewpoints of stuff like that helps us solidify our own knowledge. It's ignorant and foolish to just cover your ears (literally in this case) and pretend other opinions/viewpoints don't exist. But I guess that's something you learn by experience, hopefully.

[i'm talking in general with IMs and stuff]

I personally hate it when I type a lot of important things, or stuff i want the other person to reaaallllyy listen/read, and they just comment back with a 'K, Ok, yeah sure'

I mean, yeah its their life, but it pisses me off when I have something for the other person to care about and they dont give a firetruck about it.

I like Spider-Man 3: The Video Game. It's still a good game.

For which system? I personally liked 2 better in terms of the PS2 versions of the games, but 3 wasn't a bad game by any means.

Warning this might upset some people.

Out of all websites/Forums I've been to, THIS is probably the only place were people get offended by most jokes and takes things too literal .

Plus people get called out for whatever the hell they did.

If you were as exposed and educated on social justice like Koko and I are, you would be as "easily offended" as we are. It's not something fun we do. We don't enjoy doing it. But because we're educated, simple behaviours, attitudes and ways of thinking you think are acceptable, we recognize are actually very discriminatory and offensive in a subtle way. Yeah, maybe the way that we respond to them or handle them doesn't always work. But it doesn't mean it's unreasonable to be upset or angered by whatever was said.

I'm not expecting you to do this but the next time you wonder why someone is overreacting when a joke is made or by something that was said, ask yourself why it's funny or okay to you. Look into its nature and the origins behind it. Make yourself think about it. You might find it's not so amusing anymore.

Except Xion is polarizing and people have very strong feelings towards her, good and bad.  If things like Ohh xion suxs are things people can and frequently do say in all seriousness, it's not much of a joke.  The principle holds true with a lot of things.

Let me preface this response saying that my intent is to not start a fight here.

Sometimes, the people taking things too seriously need to logically think what the intent of the post is. If it's a deliberate insult, then it should be treated justly, but if someone posts something that is a response to the thread, that just so happens to have a subtle insult, but is not in the context of the post, then one should think which is the better choice: Fight, or just let it go.

It's unhealthy to get bent out of shape over every little thing, you know?

The intent for this site is for people to come together who have similar interests and have fun about the discussions and make friends. Not everyone is a misogynist or uneducated. so please be fair with what you guys decide is wrong.

There are some things that shouldn't be joked about though. Random forum or not.
