baylaust 2,531 Posted September 23, 2011 Alright, if you are a human being, then there are 2 movies that you must have seen at one point in your life: Toy Story, and The Lion King. I simply do not believe that anyone has not seen either of these two animated masterpieces at one point in their lives. Much like Toy Story did before Toy Story 3 came out, The Lion King is back in theaters for a short time, and in 3D. After 17 years, does it still hold up by today's standards? I've seen it, and here is my review. Keep in mind that this is MY review of the movie. Your opinion may very well differ from mine. Story I'm sure all of you know how it goes, but for the very, very few that don't, the movie follows a lion cub named Simba, son of the current lion king, Mufasa. As such, he is destined to become the next king of the Pride Lands when his father is gone. However, after Simba is tricked by his uncle Scar into believing he was responsible for his father's death, Simba runs away and abandons his destiny, while Scar takes over the Pride Lands as its new king and drives everything into chaos. This movie appeals to every age. It has the kiddy moments with some good humor that is still able to appeal to older audiences. However, things get very tense at times, and even at the age of 17, I was amazed at what I was seeing. The stampede scene and the last 10 minutes of the movie in particular are absolutely jaw-droppingly amazing, and 17 years later, they have the same impact as from when I was a little kid watching the movie. And like I said, while it has the stuff that the 4-5 year olds will enjoy, it doesn't treat the audience like they're... well, little kids. There are moments that you would be amazed are for kids, but that's what I like about this movie. It doesn't pretend that everything always works out for the best. One of the key themes of the movie is that bad things WILL happen in life, but you have to face your past and move on, and that's always a good message for everyone. Acting Disney movies pretty much always have amazing voice acting, and this is certainly no exception. Everybody does a great job in this movie, and I also like that most of the voice actors were also able to sing for the songs as well, which shows dedication. Matthew Broderick is good as Simba, and James Earl Jones... he's James Earl Jones. If you ever say something negative about him, you will implode. The best performance, in my opinion, is that of Jeremy Irons as Scar. Scar is easily one of my favourite Disney villains of all time. Not just my favourite animated Disney villain, but my favourite Disney villain overall, and I don't believe he would have had the same impact if anyone other than Jeremy Irons voiced him. His song was one of the best parts of the entire movie, and my hat goes off to him. Presentation The Lion King was made 17 years ago, so I was walking into it expecting it to look older and dated. I was pleasently surprised. Either they did a lot of updating, or the movie just really holds up well over all this time, but the animation is absolutely great, even by today's standards. I was somewhat skeptical about the movie being converted into 3D. The past history of movies being converted into 3D... hasn't been good (*cough*everypostconversionmovieever*cough*) Just another way the movie surprised me I guess, because the 3D only made it look that much better. It's crystal clear, and the animation looks breathtaking to say the least. It's rare that I say this, but if you want to see The Lion King, see it in 3D. Verdict So I give The Lion King 3D a: 10 / 10 I tried. I tried oh so very hard to find something wrong with this movie. I simply couldn't. It's just a good movie. The acting is amazing, the humour is great, the story is epic, the animation is breathtaking, it's just the perfect length, the soundtrack is brilliant, it's just awesome. Some of you might think this is just me with my nostalgia goggles on, but to put it simply, as a movie reviewer, if I gave The Lion King 3D anything lower than a perfect score, I would never forgive myself. It will only be in theaters for another week, so take my word, and see it immediately. So, have you seen The Lion King 3D? What did you think? Was I too harsh or too leniant? Did I miss anything? Let me know. baylaust out.

Cruxis 1 Posted September 23, 2011 Couldn't get to a 3D showing http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/smiley-cry.png but I agree that the Lion King continues to impress, even in 2D. I worried that the movie might have lost some of its charm (especially after seeing it on broadway a couple years ago, which was amazing) but it's just as touching, if not more so than it was when I was a child. Keyblade Master Xine 196 Posted September 23, 2011 The Lion King is one of my favorite Disney movies and is on my list of favorite movies. When I was a kid, I memorized(insert Axel joke here) every line and every song in the entire movie and annoyed everyone in my family. I even had the video game on the SNES. Good times.
