I am preeetty sure you have to eat it. In fact, I thought that when he tossed it to Sora saying

"Come on, I know you want to try it."

"What are you--?!"

*Riku laughs at him*

*Sora tosses fruit*

*the two run up after Kairi*

I always thought that meant Riku was making fun of Sora like "Oh yeah I totally know you have a crush on Kairi!"

Anyway, Riku was totally making fun of Sora having a crush on Kairi. If you remember later, when Sora had to race Riku to name the raft? (I never won that, btw xD) Riku said whoever wins the race would get to share the paopu fruit with Kairi. And how after the race Riku says something to Sora like "What? Oh, the paopu thing? That was just a joke. You should've seen the look on your face."

tutti frutti. Much like what everyone else stated, I believe that people would have to eat the Paopu Fruit in order for it to take effect. Though if you count that picture that Sora and Kairi drew of each other, that could count as them sharing a couple Paopu Fruit along with their destinies being intertwined.
