  1. 1. Should I try to confront them directly about this?

    • Wait Until September 8 to see if I can have the class and then argue.

I signed up for my 3 classes at orientation, 1 math class, 1 english class and 1 computer science class. Upon coming back and talking with my parents, I realized that my schedule had been poorly drawn with long breaks between classes. So I decided to wait until September 1st today, to alter my classes to design them better. I dropped all 3 classes to start fresh after checking that they were available on my planner. I redesigned two of my classes to be closer together. But I found I couldn't put back my math class, I wasn't sure exactly why so I called up the academic counselor and explained my problem starting with what I signed up for Orientation. She told me that the class was restricted to sophmores, juniors and Seniors till September 8th. Now, I'm unsure about what to do b/c I already tried calling once.

Yes, I say to argue it.

It’s not like it’s a new class, right? Your education comes first. If you are paying that school to attend it, then they should be able to accommodate you.

Did they tell you that the class was exclusive at orientation? If not, then you shouldn’t be penalized for not knowing something that they should have told you.

Yeah, I think I should argue probably but I'm not sure if I'd be able to win b/c while it didn't say that it was exclusive on the course planner, it did say that if you actually tried to sign up for the class. I thought the course planner took into account more than just time and it was not mentioned at orientation that there would be exclusions, there might have been a small mention of there being a possibility of some classes. I relied on the planner way too much and didn't realize its flaws.

You could also try contacting the head of the math department to see if they'll allow an exception for you. I had to do this for a class that had a prerequisite but it was for learning how to use a freaking computer which I already knew that. So they waved it and let me take the class. If not, maybe the professor of the class can help out, though sometimes in these situations they are limited.

Fix it immediately. Whatever you do don't actually sit down in a different class you're not supposed to be because by that point they'll convince you they cannot, will not change it. And that's how I ended up in a math class that was way higher than my level because they thought that's where they should be put me. I spent every morning coming in before school to get help and I still only passed with a C, while I had A's in everything else. That was a first for me and it was horrible. I shouldn't have been in that class. (That's what I get for switching schools and them not understanding what level I was at before even after I talked to them.)

It went a little something like this: somethingsomething theorem is what you'll be using to--- what's a theorem? o_o Ohgod, triangles? Whut? I'm so lost! This was me jumping from pre-Algebra to Algebra 2 with some kind of random geometry inserted into both. (The real problem was that at my old school, the math teacher sadly passed away at the beginning of the year, leaving us all a bit behind because it was a tiny school in the middle of nowhere and we couldn't just find a replacement. When I should have been learning Algebra 1, classes for that year in math were simply cancelled. I switched schools and they kindly just shoved me where they thought I belonged for my age and grade level.)

Did they not have you take a test to assess your level before putting you in a class? That's what my school does with all new students. If they don't, they should for cases like yours.

I am not sure not sure how popular this math class is, it's high but not that high. 2 classes have already been wait-listed. The good part is that I can start to have a breakthrough on Sept. 6 by talking to the Orientation people, it seems like they're closed for the next 4 days.
