I'm a shy girl too and, odd as it is, speech class helped me break out of my shyness. I'll always be shy but I'm getting better at it. It also helps to try and talk to only a few people instead of talking in a big group. Lots of people always make me clam up.

I used to be really shy, I'm still a little shy sometimes. You just have to start talking more and not worry about what people think, and don't get afraid of saying something stupid. Eventually after you start talking more, even if you sound weird at first, you will feel more comfortable talking to people. Also as the person above said, just be yourself. :)

Start with a joke. That's how I get out of being nervous with people. It doesn't even have to be a good one.

Awkward laughs are great to break the silence.

Being shy too, sometimes the best thing to do is to go out on a limb and try something new. If I hadn't pushed myself off the metaphoric ledge, I never would have written and produced the school play, which turned out to be the greatest moment of my life.

Also try to join some clubs, especially music. I've met most of my friends through rocking solos on the saxophone in jazz band.

I have to agree with you. Music groups are a good thing to try out. I even managed to win the song festival of my school on my first year there :P
