misinformation about Bill S.978?

Recommended Posts

I just found this that talks about what Bill S.978's REAL intent really is. Just read the link below and it wil explain it to you in full detail about this bill. Thsi makes it seem that a lot of people just assumed that this would go against YouTube. Well, it's glad to know that the Congress happily explained about this whole thing.

So, I guess that U.S. internet users will be just fine if this bill passes.

Nobody has a First Amendment right to steal another person’s property, and that is the only “speech” that will be impacted by the bill.

o3o Look a quote from the article! Here, my rant on piracy:

The irony is still that in piracy no profit is actually being made. Content is not stolen for profit. Nor is any money being taken from the owner. A digital copy is being made. They're actually like the moment you steal something no one else can have it anymore. They're using the word 'steal' improperly. The only thing that could be possibly be implied to as being stolen is the money they'd otherwise be getting from people who, without a free alternative, would have to purchase a legitimate copy. If these same people never had any intention to buy a legitimate copy, no money is lost still.

Not to sound like I'm supporting piracy here or anything but: Nothing is being stolen. They need to find a new word. Free copies are being made, and yes, this behavior may deny profits. Then again, that's assuming a purchasable copy still exists of whatever is being pirated. If a vhs tape was never ported to dvd, no one sells it, and no company has actually published it in 'x' amount of years, I hardly see what the problem is.

With books, copyright went from meaning who had the right to publish the book in whole to who had claim over the characters, plots, and ideas held within. No one could duplicate those ideas and rewrite a similar book. Around this same time it was decided once an author has been dead for 'x' amount of years or once the book is 'x' amount of years old, it became 'public domain' and adaptions of it could be made. Is there any such public domain date after 'x' amount of time that film and music becomes public domain? Currently?

The entire premise behind piracy comes from people all over the world who feel they are being overcharged for something so easily copied. From handwritten books to the printing press, from play by ear to sheet music, from live concerts to radio, from radio to that kid who wants to record it onto a cassette tape instead of buy a cd, to the people who charge $15 for a five cents of disk, to people who refuse to pay that much who want to be charged zero cents for their digital copy of the -one- song they wanted off a disk of twelve. It just gets easier and easier to copy things. Once upon a time the price actually had to do with the cost of materials and for paying workers the time it took to make the copy. Digital copies come at the cost of no material cost and no workers, so of course things are being freely distributed. The bad news? The artist isn't getting paid, either.

I hate the music industries for their overpriced stuff mostly because the original artists aren't getting enough of the profit. It doesn't cost that much to make a cd, the artist sees less than half of the total cost of the cd, and it kills me to know that so much of the money is just being pocketed by the company who makes the cds when they really don't deserve it. BUY music digitally and you'll notice how inexpensive it really is in comparison to a cd. The artist gets their share and those greedy companies don't.

It's a horrible cycle, really. If the prices were lower, maybe people would stop pirating. Then again, the more pirating goes on, the larger the loss of profits is, and the more the prices actually jack up. -__-

I had a feeling when I saw the articles flying up that there was some misinformation going on since none of the articles were ever specific about their claims. It was hard to find anything about this bill other than the rumors too. Thanks for posting this KH125 ;)
