Like the others said it just a metaphor... Unless you take it to the extreme and start using your brains. Darkness is, well, dark, and as it's evil it should stink. So I pointing more to burned coal smell. But as I said this must be just another KH metaphor.

Yeah, for some reason, when Riku and also Zexion sesne darkness, they think of it as a smell. It's quite odd and they've made fun of it in the manga, like how Xemnas and Riku 'smell' alike. They must be using the same deoderent.

CoM is the only game I didn't complete so I wasn't aware that Riku was a bloodhound for darkness. I wonder, in retrospect, if Sora can smell light?

 

I think darkness would smell like rotten fish, burnt rubber, and body odor. And light would probably smell like Paupu fruits
