sony f*cked up massively. a hacker was able to saunter in and take all personal info from EVERY PSN USER ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, and it took sony a week to actually tell people.

 

so if your PSN password is the same as your email accounts, change it, as they could access it.

 

and you should cancel the credit card which you used for PSN.

 

sony are working to getting it fixed, but they're saying it still might take a week, so it's strongly reccomended that you do what i said above

still, to download stuff from PSN you need a playstation network account, make sure that the password for that isn't the same as your email password

I know, my PSN password and email password are different. I'm safe. Sony says "It only does everything", yet it can't protect itself from hackers. lol SMH

I heard playstation plus subscribers were notified last Thursday.. this is yet again unacceptable bullsht from Sony. If they keep this up I'm swapping for a 360.

Uh, isn't that a bit much? It's just a feature on the Playstation--no need to get a 360 because something isn't reliable. The PS3 is still a really good console system with great games. If you like online gaming, and the service isn't reliable, then yeah, I think you should swap. But not only that, if you followed the PS3 hacking scene, you would see the other douchebag tactics that Sony use on hackers. One hacker called Graf_Chokolo is being sued for 1,000,000 euro for bringing back other os which Sony illegally removed from the console via a firmware update. I am tired of their bs. And I have a ps3 and I know about online gaming because I used to do that before psn was reduced to rubble. I don't need to read threads about gaming here as I keep myself quite up to date via IGN and Machima, thanks anyways.

Well, you're just one person to thousands that are joining, so I think Sony will still manage. Free online to paid online is a smoove move.

Incorrect. They only found out a couple days ago. They just needed to know how much was jeopardized before making an announcement.

 

Anyway, that's why I don't use my credit card for getting anything online: hackers.

I used my card on there a couple of times, but I did not save the information, and the last thing I bought was... about this time last year, I am thinking it will be okay.

Plus there are no official reports yet of anything resulting from the breach, that I am aware of.

But remember, it is not just the CC information, addresses and phone numbers too... And how on Earth would one person manage to obtain all that in one day, for 70 million accounts.?

I just thought of something that makes my card temporarily safe. for them to use it to buy stuff online, they would need your card security code. i always found that code kind of useless before, but now i see why they exist

thats how awful sony's security is. in a matter of minutes, 1 person managed to get into PSN and obtain the personal information of every PSN user all over the world.

Sony make great games, and very impressive hardware, but they have the worst security ever.

I may be wrong, but your address is linked to your bank account / credit card and so it would be a security thing to prevent you using someone else's card.

If it's connected to the internet, it can be hacked. End of story. What happened to Sony could have happened to Microsoft, or Nintendo, or anyone else. They are not at fault whatsoever for what happened to them.

 

What they are responsible for is their complete failure to communicate with their consumers, not updating anyone until almost a week in. But as they said yesterday, they only found out about everyone's personal info a couple days ago, and they had to know exactly what had been compromised before telling the public. Not the best solution, but I'd rather wait until Sony knew what was at stake and what they would do to prevent it, then have them release a bunch of updates saying "Yep, still down. Don't know when it will be up again. Sorry. "

 

Is it bad that everyone's PI is at risk? Yes, very. But Sony isn't to blame for that.

 

Sorry for the double post, but Sony has confirmed that there is no evidence that credit card info was stolen, and that data was encrypted:

 

"Sony has revealed, via an update on its US blog, that it encrypted credit card data on its servers, and one again reiterated it has no evidence that any credit card information has been stolen by hackers.

 

The company did confirm that "personal" data - presumably things such as a user's e-mail, password, and billing address - was not encrypted, but was stored "behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack."

 

Sony confirmed yesterday that hackers had been able to access personal information of over 77 million PlayStation Network users. This latest reveal follows increasing pressure on the company to divulge information about its security practices.

 

When PlayStation Network returns - supposedly within the next week - Sony will make password changes mandatory for all users. "We are working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored," says the company.

 

"We will provide more details about the new update shortly."

 

How will Sony ensure something like this never happens again? "Moving forward, we are initiating several measures that will significantly enhance all aspects of PlayStation Network’s security and your personal data, including moving our network infrastructure and data center to a new, more secure location, which is already underway.""

This was probably because of the whole Geohot thing.

 

I doubt it helped matters. But it was probably unknown hackers using the Anonymous & Geohot vs Sony situation as cover.

Think about it, Anonymous promise Sony to expect them to make their biggest attack and then some dude just breaks in, all fingers point to Anonymous / Hotz while the guy really responsible is less likely to get caught because of all that.

 

No one knows anything about what really happened to it, to be honest... Sony are being vague about it.
