KHRecoded thoughts on coded/re:coded

Recommended Posts

tutti frutti. Mostly due to the countless threads about re:coded, just thought I would try to attempt to create one thread for everyone's own opinion about the game. (for those who put links stating there is a thread like this, hey I tried).

Getting that out of the way, I have to say that there are countless backs and forths about re:coded being a good and/or bad game in general for different reasons. Overall what are your opinions about the game.

Despite that fact that I spoiled it for myself when the original came out, mostly because I wasn't holding my breath for it to be released outside of Japan, I though that re:coded wasn't a very great game in general. The only real reason behind the story that I had seen was merely a reminder that Terra, Ven, Aqua, among other characters need help. Other than that, there was "Thanking Namine" reminder that was filled, but after that, there really wasn't much else. If Yen Sid was going to put Sora and Riku through the Mark Of Mastery Exam, then is could have been revealed in the Secret Ending in BBS or even BBSFM.

Frankly, I completely agree with you. To be honest, I think this whole chapter of the Kingdom Hearts story was completely and utterly unnecessary. I truly believe they could've cropped out this entire portion of the story and simply communicated the apparent need for Sora to "save" TVA/RXA/Namine in a much, much, much, much more concise way. It didn't by any means require an entire game of irrelevant events. And, as you mentioned, the scene with Yen Sid could simply have appeared in BBS/BBSFM/perhaps even at the start of DDD. Also, beyond its almost complete irrelevance (as I've discussed), the story was severely lacking any emotional substance! Whereas BBS and Days were very intimate and emotionally captivating, Re:coded had nothing. In fact, were I a newcomer to the series, my immediate reaction to this game and this series would be that it is silly and not worth my time. Goes without saying, being a die-hard KH fan, I enjoyed the game nonetheless. And if you can look past its failure at telling a good story, the gameplay was really fun and really well developed. It was certainly innovative and kept me intrigued the whole way through.

I don't really understand what's so horrible and useless about Re:Coded, I for one, really loved this game; to me, it didn't feel like a re-hash or something that wasn't important -cough-Xion-cough-. There was a story there, alot of people might not see it, but it was there. And I'm likely speaking for 20% of the fans that actually really loved the story and gameplay. I'm happy to say this is my 2nd favorite KH game, right behind BbS. ;3

Honestly, I don't see why people don't think it was necessary. Every chapter of the Kingdom Hearts series is necessary. They each serve to further expand the story. Without this game, we would not have know what the letter said, about Sora and Riku's test, or the fact that everyone needs to be saved (while they do appear in Blank Points, we don't know for sure exactly why they're there). I personally thought this game was needed, and the gameplay was also quite well designed.

Yes, but all of this could've easily been explained in a 5-minute long cutscene. It didn't require a whole game. These are mere "facts," as opposed to things that requires a lot of development, such as characters, their stories, major plot devices/twists/all that jazz. The content of a letter/the fact that everyone needs to be saved and Yen Sid's summoning of Sora and Riku (which really has no connection to Re:coded anyway; they could've placed that cutscene at the end of BBS and it would've been just as relevant) do not require any sort of development. Re:coded, for some obscure reason, chose to center an entire game around these basic and relatively unimportant plot elements (relative to the plot elements found in every other game...), and the game itself chose to do so by including some whole other, completely irrelevant plotline with the journal and everything. The series could easily do without the whole journal/data story, unless Nomura somehow miraculously ties it in as a major element later in the series, which is highly doubtful.

Again, I'm not saying I disliked it. I deeply love and thoroughly enjoy everything Kingdom Hearts related. All I'm saying is that it was truly an unnecessary game (and, as much as it hurts to say it, almost a scam for money) and they could've done without it. "Less is more," as they say.

I agree that most of the story was filler and only the last 15 minutes were really relevant. HOWEVER as thin as the story was I did find it very interesting when the cutscenes were actually happening. The selling point though, was the gameplay. I was super excited to see that they implemented most of the BbS battle system and how it worked pretty well on the DS. The growth system is really fun and I found myself striving to fill it out as much as possible. Yes the main story was pretty short, but thankfully there were TONS of post game content! I got the game two days early at Nintendo World and I still only have 11 trophies!

Interesting. I don't have the game, but I honestly already like it. It pushes the DS to the extreme, yes. I know the story isn't the most emotional or thrilling, but there IS a story there.

Sometimes, just to get the STORY out of the way, I just say: "Oh, this is a KH remake for DS", even tough I know it isn't anywho, the story IS important, and I'm sure Data-Sora is VERY cannon to the series and I'm looking forward to seeing him again, maybe.

The gameplay, tough, seems amazing. a combination of KH Days and Birth By Sleep was a great idea. Tough I have not played the game out of an emulator, I can tell it's a big and great game.

I recommend any KH Gamer who already KNOWS a lot of the story to play it. Newer gamers will find themselves confused, if nothing else. They will not like the series by story if they start by this game, maybe by gameplay, It's a good game for those who don't care about the story.

Tough you are supposed to go through Sora's KH adventure, not all were included. Since Tarzan lost their copyrights to Disney, Deep Jungle was not shown. Apparently Halloween town could have been shown, since they already had most of the world in DAYS, but since the story was not written on the original Coded, it was not put in into the remake. Monstro was also not included.

The story didn't change from the original Coded, so it is not to blame the remake for that.

The story was greatly lacking and very short. And it annoyed me whenever they were being overly gushy about the data-Sora. And when Riku went evil again...However, the gameplay that was there was really fun and cool, I thought. And there is alot of things to do after you beat it. So overall, the game was okay.

I AGREE dont like the game alot... like the gameplay the story is kinda cool but its kinda hard and anoying... and it gets me confused in some bits the reason i really got this game is because i saw the battle with hooded roxas (the battle from khff) and i got exited but its kinda anoying when for exaple at hercules you fight that dog the you fight hades if you die at hades you have to fight the dog again and that was really.. :@ but the story isnt that bad but i think its the worst kh that came.. but thats only my opinion!

tutti frutti. I agree with a number of you there about the gameplay. For the handheld consoles, like the DS and PSP, I much prefer the gameplays of re:coded and BBS over KHDays. But to me KHDays and BBS both had more meaning than re:Coded. KHDays more so answered the question more of who Roxas was, along with the events that happened between KH1 and KH2 while overlapping KH:CoM. Mostly since Roxas had no recollection of his previous life, and he didn't really have much of anything as a nobody. Overall, I could see a major character, good or bad, wanting to have a backup of some sort for their future plan, which is how I look at Xion.

I like he stories in the worlds. They seemed like the first rehashed worlds that actually KNEW they were rehashed. The game practically relies on you knowing how the game would have gone without the glitches, and that's what makes it so interesting.

The gameplay is great, as well.I really don't see why the fact that the games main point can be summarised in 5 minutes makes the game worthless. It's kinda depressing when fans of a series complain about the fact that they get another installment :/

Not complaining. I don't think any of us are. We're all happy it exists. But the fact is that the game is just unnecessary. If you step out and look at it from the perspective of someone who isn't a KH-obsessed fan (which I undoubtedly am/all of us here are), it wouldn't be a game you'd really want to play. If I weren't as into Kingdom Hearts as I am, I'd skip this game entirely and just read a 2-minute brief on it, because that's all it requires. There's no real character or plot development that requires anything beyond reading a summary. And plus, the plot hardly gives us anything important. It's very very very empty. But I emphasize that, as a die-hard fan of the series, I still highly enjoyed it and am glad it exists.

I can't see a non die hard fan caring enough about the story to not get the game simply because it has little impact.

I dunno, maybe it's because I've always liked the gameplay more than the story in KH (Not to say I don't like the story or anything)

I dunno :/

Well, at first I though the game and controls were rather lame. Then as I kept playing - I decided I actually kind of liked the gameplay and the story. I didn't like the backdoor stuff that much - but I got through it. I especially liked the ending

with Sora going to Castle Oblivion and getting to fight Roxas and stuff.

Plus, I liked the scene after the credits. :D

So I was happy with it overall. Probably wouldn't play it AGAIN. But it was a good experience. I believe only die-hard fans like myself would enjoy it though.

I beat the story. I have not gotten over twenty trophies, and therefore have not gotten the 'special suprise' which i am pretty sure is the Secret Ending. In my opinion, it does not add much information, besides what happened while Sora was asleep in the giant egg-type-thing, Namine put him in. The only good thing it adds to the story is what Mickey wrote in the ending after the credits in Kingdom Hearts II. Good game in my opinion though.

My Goal right now is to get to level 99, and then get all trophies.

Overall, I agree with bambii. There are elements to a game that people look at than just a game. There's the story, gameplay, graphics, controls, etc., but what good is all of that if it is not done right? It's kind of like giving Hotel Mario the benefit of the doubt even though it was a horrid game (my own opinion). Even though coded was a story between KH2 and KH3D, it still needed to come together right in order to be an overall good game.

Here's what I thought of the game. It was weak compared to my 3 favorite KH games, BBS, KH2, and Days. It really pissed me off that Nomura did a KH1 carbon copy just like CoM (probably because he thought everyone loved KH1 the most. Hopefully the survey from July that showed people loved KH2: FM+ the most made him realize people don't want anymore KH1 carbon copies). At least the game didn't use the annoying card battle system from CoM. Also, the game used the awesome battle system from BBS and included a memorable final battle with Roxas. So because of these reasons, I believe Re:Coded is one of the weaker KH games, but at least it's a better game than CoM imo.
