Final Fantasy XVI Spoilers Discussion

the game was beautiful and then it wasn't

also i know they were only in sidequests but man it really hit me that

dion didn't get to come back and talk to harpocrates and that clive couldn't come back and write his stories

 

even with the issues i had here and there with pacing, story, gameplay, some odd choices generally throughout the game, i still really enjoyed this

the ending was just absolutely beautifully done imo

Like I had fun with the game, and I enjoyed the ending

But it didn't really hit me

Didn't help that anyone who

cried for Clive were characters I don't really care about coughcoughJillcoughcough

 

Compared to FF15, which had it's story told so badly, I cried with the ending

I genuinely cared for all the characters there and I wish I did the same here

surprisingly,

gav was what got me the most. the character i didn't expect to care about at all throughout the game just kept getting better and more development through main and side quests and when he saw Jill leave and realized what it meant, it kinda hit me lol. his relationship with Clive is great and then his previous ties to cid is what made it such a strong moment for me imo

It's such a shame

Cid went out so early. He should have stuck around for longer so not only could Jill actually interact with him, but we could see him trying to make Clive a leader

They should have put the second mother crystal, the only time Jill gets a moment to shine, earlier. Cid should have been there and his death happens at the first (second here) mother crystal

 

 

That way Cid sticks around longer, and you get those two to actually interact with each other

 

The whole timeskip is still just so bizarre for me

man I can understand people not liking the gameplay of the sidequests but the stories are genuinely great and better than in any other FF game. It does so much in terms of fleshing out the world and side characters. Not a single other single player mainline FF game comes close to this

XVI has a better and more believable world than any other of the single player mainline games

I feel like people lied to me

the first 15 hours of the game has more and better world building than the entirety of XV

The issue is its not fun to do

We get it about the bearers thanks to the main story so seeing more of it does nothing in the side quests, and then add on top of it that you just do the same menial tasks over again and it just becomes a slog to get through

It doesn't help that any party member with Clive is dead as a fish so you don't even get any fun or interesting interaction between them

Which is something XV and FF7R excels at

I at least had fun collecting cats in 7R because we had Tifa bring some life into it all

Also helps that side stuff in 7R wasn't only just fight people. In chapter 3 you had the monster stacking points, the more you killed the better prize you got. With Aerith later you could do the box whack a mole thing that's also fun to do. Later in 13 or 14, after the plate fell, you can do the pullups.

For me XVI feels so far that it wants to flesh out all characters equally. Each character has their small arc. Even the support characters. I wish in the MSQ they would have more interactions outside of cutscenes though

It's just not fighting all the time which is all xvi does

Except the most interesting part happens at the end of the game

So you have to slog through mediocre garbage just to get to a decent to good payoff

Garbage is a harsh word

I really hope that CBU1 steals all the good stuff for Rebirth.

Rebirth needs as much towns

add all the stuff that is in the 7 ultimanias into the game

there's a small part in Junon where you can interact with Rude while Cloud is disguised as a soldier. I hope they give Rude a small character arc there

KH had the same problem up until 3. KH was so combat heavy that anything other than combat felt tedious and unnecessary. That’s why I appreciate that a better balance was struck in 3. Most of 3 I enjoyed playing including the side stuff because they took the time to flesh it out.

What helps with that distraction in KH is how each world is fully unique. Maybe not so much in it's platforming, but they all look different so you don't get fully bored with it.

Then it also does something that 16 lacks in a big way, finding stuff in those worlds actually feels rewarding.

Doesn't give you the best of stuff but it at least wants you to go around finding them

And more than not, it's stuff you would use rather than another crafting material that just hangs around with 100s of others you already have in storage.

sidequest stories were great but they were literally all tacked into the end of the game and if you wanted to actually see these stories to their ends you'd have to break pacing so bad with the main story
