What I've picked up so far is that summoners are the vessels of the eikons, called Dominants with the MC being specifically Phoenix's Dominant and his role is to protect Ifrit's Dominant, Joshua (which obviously doesn't go well) since he can't actually control Ifrit. At some point he basically gains the ability to become the Dominant of other Eikons like Garuda and Titan alongside Phoenix similar to Devil Arms in DMC. Whether this is something everybody can do or is special to him I dunno.

Given his Joshua Shield they probably grew up together and are very close even if they're not blood related

I like to think Joshua is going to be the antagonist somehow

It's a neat idea that Joshua is Ifrit's Dominant, but I think he's the Dominant for both Ifrit and Phoenix

So it might be that Joshua had the power of both but could only control Phoenix, but when that person died in front of him he lost himself and summoned Ifrit instead

Now the only issue is that the flaming body that summoned it looked way older than Joshua

And Phoenix possibly went to Shield instead

As in just the wings, claws and fists
