Not familar with him either, but called himself Milton in the show, and knowing Smallville Brainiacs name was Milton Fine, amd showrunners confirmed in a interview thats confirmation that hes Brainiac for the next two episodes

regarding the superman and lois stuff:

despite never being called braniac directly, he's been referred to that way before (as hunt has pointed out weeks back) and they did include the classic braniac symbol a few times during the episode

 

 

also, cavanagh played a character named gordon godfrey, likely a direct reference to glorious godfrey from the comics, an apokoliptan figure who has also presented himself as a tv personality in other media (like smallville and young justice)
