So all this grinding has given me time to think.

And I'm thinking this isn't really a Jaeger attack. It's some sort of secret test.

Surprises seem to be their style and throwing them out of their comfort zone surrounded by enemies would be a good way to test them in a scenario that's a bit more realistic than babies first dungeon crawl.

Also it explains them not being dead after losing. If they were being kidnapped they should have been tied up or something.
