My thought is more that the endings don't matter because the end result is the same. Sora will turn into a crystal at some point, so in that sense both endings are canon. Sora losing turns him into a crystal immediately and Sora winning means he delayed the inevitable for a while.

To be fair, how are you supposed to find him. Wayfinder trio went into the realm of darkness and Roxas&Xion are doing memory stuff to see if they can find him

Sleeping realm is a good next step to look for him
