but now i'm like pretty sure R2 switches targets and L2 is useless

When I played sora's side of re:com I thought repliku was just an emo clone. But playing Riku's side I feel for the guy. Like damn he really believed he was his own person and the org was just stripping away his agency and using him.

ReCoM helps a lot with the emotion of the whole story since voiced cutscenes but i remember being quite sad when playing CoM as a kid because Sora just couldn't win
