Oh no it has very much a plot in fact that has a much bigger story than most final fantasies due to the nature of expansions it's basically four games right now continung one large story

FFXIV has a pretty great story overall. That being said do keep in mind ARR, the section before the expansions, drags on a bit.

The rest is worth it though and they're trimming ARR down a bit soon.

There is one Quest where a guy sends you on to find the crystal things and he accidentally send you to the wrong one like five or six times I imagine that's the kind of stuff they're going to cut down there's a lot of filler like that
