Winter weather is finally upon us so here’s some tips for anyone who’s anxious about driving in it:

-It’s always a good idea to check the weather 12 hours before you plan to leave. Pay special attention to any winter weather advisories.
-If practical, leave 10 to 15 minutes early. Traffic might be slower than you expect.
-Snowplows help a lot but they’re by no means foolproof. Be prepared for icy conditions even if the road doesn’t look that way. When in doubt, wiggle the wheel a tiny bit and see how much you slide around.
-Be prepared to stop sooner than usual. A good rule of thumb is to start braking two to three cars ahead of where you would normally. Three to four on the freeway.
-Be extra cautious on clover leaves and on/off ramps. Sometimes they’re not plowed terribly well.
-Take your time turning. You won’t have as much traction.
