This is a Skinner Box.

They're a thing studied in psychology made to study the behavior patterns of animals (and people) when they're in an "ideal" environment and how this could effect their development. They're also used to condition certain behaviors in animals, mostly rats and dogs, but have been used on infants and babies.

Before you go worrying: No, no animals or humans were harmed when used to experiment behaviors. All human children were volunteered by their parents.
