You have light and dark
Your ship can also be light or dark

If you are a light ship and run into light bullets, you absorb them for power and die from dark bullets

If you are a dark ship, and run into dark bullets, you absorb them for power and die from light bullets

Being the opposite color to your enemy does extra damage
