Actual review cause everyone's wrong

Recommended Posts

The only reason I created this account is cause for whatever reason "fans" of the series are criticizing the game in the weirdest most childish way possible. heres a proper review

the good

Presentation: Everything looks amazing. Very few textures seem to need a bit of extra work. just amazing all around. The game looks better than the trailers.

Performance: Better than expected. On the ps4 pro you'll rarely get frame drops and that's only if a lot of shit is happening.

Combat: fast, handy satisfying combos (unlike other games in the series). Floatyness although present is not much of an issue. The magic is the best we've ever seen in the series. Even better than 0.2. The forms are cool. They fixed antiform and gave you a reason to actually use it. Situation commands are pretty good. Team attacks are cool as shit and better than ever before. Summons too.

Platforming: Better than ever. Flowmotion is exactly what it should be (toned down but useful).

World design: Better than ever. Big areas, bigger worlds and a good amount of exploration available.

Story: Mostly great. Towards the end of the game its actually amazing. Nomura delivered on his promise to have things resolved. The games answered questions you didn't even know you had. Every major mystery from the previous games is addressed and given a satisfying answer.

the bad

Combat: The Disney Rides are trash. They are cool for like the first 2 times you try them but you quickly realize how broken they are. They break the Flow of the battles too.

Ability system: Although its cool to see this aspect of kh2 make a return they could have done 10000 times better. Nomura had his work cut out for him but for some firetruckin reason decided not to have abilities tied to forms like before. Forms canno longer be leveled up and I see NO reason why that is. It was the best way to make grinding fun since you were grinding for two things at once. Both for the form you're using and inevitably you were leveling sora up as well. No idea why they didn't do that here

Platforming: Wallrunning can be a bit awkward.

Pacing: ALL of the story happens at the last 20-25% of the game. This ties to a bigger issue: No original worlds. Twilight Town was a joke. It had like 2 explorable areas with no platforming and nothing worth anyones time. No radiant garden, no mysterious tower, no destiny islands, the keyblade graveyard is small and uninteresting with 0 exploration and the same goes for the final world. The reason this is tied to pacing is because in previous titles, these places kept the story going throughout the playthrough without letting things get too stale. You would visit more than once and get meaningful revelations and story bits. In kh3 the important shit is crammed into the last 2 worlds.

story: Maleficent and Pete were..uhh..useless. We never got to see them do anything. No resolution whatsoever. The whole box thing went nowhere

The ugly

Promotion and misinformation. We were lead to believe that Both radiant garden and destiny Islands would be actual worlds we get to experience. TT was one of the first worlds to be in a Trailer and what we got was a step down from KH2.  Complete firetrucking joke. No reason why its as small as it is. Mysterious Tower was absent as well, even though it was advertised in one of the trailers. And the worst bit of misinformation in my opinion is an interview nomura did where he said that Roxas is the "biggest secret of the game". Umm...where was that exactly? His whole bit was probably the most predictable and underwhelming thing in the story. In the kh2.5  event back in 2014 they showed a trailer where sora was actually exploring Scala ad Caelum but in the end product it was nothing but a battleground. Nomura also said that MoM wont make an appearance but his "surprise" (THE BOX FOR ANYONE TOO STUPID TO GET IT) would. And it did. FOR 2 firetruckING SECONDS AND WE GET NO INFO ON WHAT IT IS OR WHAT IT DOES.

It is a proper review and a subjective one. Others that only complain are sure the worst and not even serious. And it's not like everyone's wrong. Some are just exaggerating a lot on the complaints. But yes, it had bad points and A LOT of good points to me. Given you talked about both, you did it right.

But I have some opposite opinions. In the end it all comes down to the player, and to me the game was my best KH of all time

Spoiler

Honestly I have to agree, and disagree with this part. The whole time it is hinted at that they were told by someone about a box, a mysterious box that nobody knows about. Thanks to the Epilogue we can assume that Luxu (aka Xigbar) was the one that told them and the one that had them looking for it, even though he OBVIOUSLY knew where it was the entire time. Throughout the Secret Reports we see that he also was around with the New Union Leaders (Ephemer, Skuld, Lauriam, Brain and Ventus) back after the first Keyblade War were trying to figure out how to go to different worldlines with, what can be assumed as, the help of Maleficent. Essentially Luxu was setting her and Pete up for a bigger role to play in the future titles and/or updates to this game. We'll probably see a resurrection of the Master of Masters and he'll either be neutral, the antagonist or A protagonist of the upcoming titles and those two are going to have a role to play in them as well.

yeah but like..why even have her in there? You can take her out of the game and nothing changes. It's actually hilarious.

Spoiler

Plain and simple: World building and setup. If she just appeared in the next game and asked about stuff she had no background with, people would get even more confused than this. She had a goal, a purpose and parts of it are explained, but she doesn't achieve her goal. She realized what was up with it at the end and that sets it up for her to play a more active role in the next game or story addition to this one.

having her at the end is fine. But we already know what she wants from khux and that cutscene they had in 2.5. We really didn't need to see her fail.

I really don't know where the marketing made you believe that Destiny Islands and Radiant Garden would be actual worlds. Really.
I understand some of your negative points, but I strongly disagree with most of them (except the Maleficent/Pete part)

the last few trailers we got had a number of scenes in Radiant garden. If they never intended to have the world playable there's no reason to have those scenes in there. It's not like they teased something interesting in those scenes. As for destiny islands it was literally the first world we ever saw from kingdom hearts 3 back in e3 2013. We never knew whether it'd make it in the game seeing as how that first trailer was conceptual but later during the heavy promotional stage for the game we saw that very scene updated. Sora and goofy where there (so a party member too). If they never planned to have these places available, then they should have never been in trailers. If we never saw these scenes and got the game we'd be happy to see these places make a return (even in cutscenes). Now that we had already seen them it just feels like a disappointment. What we got in the trailers was basically the entirety of these worlds.

After reading all this I really do understand how you feel and I'm not going to say that you're wrong. But I've never had this thoughts, maybe that's why I didn't understood your logic at first. I'm sorry about that

Yeah its fine don't sweat it. And just to clear this up: I'm not negative about kh3. I LOVED kh3. It's just that I saw SO MANY reviews on this forum where people were completely missing the point with their criticism and I wanted to give my 2 cents on the issue. The pros of this game outweighed the cons 100%.
