Alexis rolled her eyes and took the paper. She then proceeded to rip it to shreds. How pathetic was this girl? No wonder Roxas kept her around; she boosted his ego. Well, Alexis and Regina were gladly going to take advantage. Roxas was hot. He would be hers, or Regina’s, soon enough.

Naminé watched her drawing be destroyed in horror. Her drawings, especially those she drew for her friends, were special to her. They were doodles more often than not, but they were made as a result of friendship and closeness. Not orders or because she was bound by an oath. "W-What do you want from me?" Naminé asked as she helplessly moved to gather the pieces of the drawing. 

 

Regina threw the brown paper lunch bag on the ground and used her stiletto heel to crush the contents--a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, apple, and granola bar. Satisfied by the now flat brown bag, Regina tilted her head and gave Naminé a condescending smile. "Get the picture now?"

Alexis smiled evilly. “Back off, blondie,” she warned. “If you don’t, we’ll make you.” This was only the tip of the iceberg. They could do much worse to convince her to stay away. Roxas was theirs.

Naminé's eyes darted between the two girls before the tears finally slipped. She tried rubbing them away, but it was like a sudden rainfall. Despite this, she shook her head as she lifted herself to her feet. "No. I won't. I...I can't." They had fought so hard to be together. She wouldn't give in now.

Lightning, who had volunteered to help set things up for the festival, had a box of decorations in her arms. Of course, she handled it easily; she wasn't training for the military for nothing. She happened to look over just as one of the girls in front of Namine rolled her eyes and looked...well, like she had an attitude problem. Lightning saw a fellow volunteer walk by and she wordlessly handed the box to him. She ignored his look of confusion and started over toward the three girls. As she got closer, she noticed Namine's expression. Lightning frowned. "Is there a problem here?" she asked, coming to a stop next to Namine and crossing her arms. The brunette became uneasy almost immediately, looking to her friend for help.

Regina flipped her hair back haughtily. Yes, she was intimidated, but she wasn't about to show that. "No problem here. We're all just having a nice little chat, right Nadine?"

 

"It's Naminé," the artist corrected with a sniff; she avoided Lightning's piercing gaze. How pathetic she must look to her friend. Unable to defend herself even against two upperclassmen girls.

"Mm-hm," Lightning hummed, though it was clear by the tone that she didn't buy that. "Unless you two are here to help set up, I suggest you leave. Aren't you supposed to be in class? I'm sure your professors would love to hear that you ditched so you could obsess over a guy who's never going to want you."

 

Alexis's jaw dropped. How...how dare she say such a thing! "Oh yeah? Look at us. Everyone wants us."

 

"Good, then you can go find someone else desperate enough to lower their standards for you," Light snapped. "Now beat it."

"Excuse me?" Regina scoffed and pointed a finely manicured finger at the pink haired girl, "We're the hottest girls at this school, and I'm pretty sure that Roxas is happy to have us here. Especially when he has to deal with miss stalker over there." She jabbed her finger at Naminé again who flinched in response. "Besides, no one asked of your opinion, Farron." Regina spat her last name out like it was poison.

Lightning rolled her eyes. This was ridiculous. "You two really don't know how to take a hint, do you?" she said, looking between them. "The only stalkers I see are you two. Roxas and Namine have been friends for years, and you've only known him for what, a week? Should we get Roxas out here to explain this to you or should we save you the embarrassment?"

 

Alexis looked from Lightning to Namine and then back again. Friends for years? How was that even possible? Namine was a total freak!

"I'm sure he just feels bad for her. I mean look at her," Regina said with a malicious laugh, "A guy like Roxas is just too nice to say anything, but you can tell he finds her annoying."

 

Naminé pressed her lips together to keep from crying harder. She couldn't break like that. Not in front of them. But what if they were telling the truth?

Lightning happened to look behind the girls in time to see the topic of their conversation approaching. His eyebrows were furrowed and a frown set on his lips. He obviously heard what the girls had to say. Lightning smirked. "Okay, go ahead and tell him yourself," she said, nodding to the boy. Alexis blinked and looked over her shoulder, and Lightning was disgusted to see her demeanor change completely. Now she was nothing but nice. Scum.

 

"Roxas! Hi!" Alexis greeted with a smile. "We've been waiting for you!"

 

Roxas looked between the girls and then at Namine. Those tears... He never wanted to see her cry. And by the sounds of things, like that comment about him finding Namine annoying, these girls were the reason why. He didn't speak, instead frowning at them. What was their deal?

"Yeah, we missed you," Regina cooed and took one his arms, sidling right up to the boy. Drowning him in her designer perfume. "How was practice? I bet you're starved now, huh?"

 

"I'm going back to the dorms," Naminé whispered shakily. She couldn't watch anymore.

Roxas lifted a hand and removed Regina from his arm. "This needs to stop," he said, looking between the girls.

 

"What do you mean?" Alexis asked, taking a step forward to be close to him. He held up a hand for her to stop, and she blinked.

 

"Listen, I don't know if I gave you the wrong impression, but this is getting out of hand," Roxas began, looking between them and frowning. "I appreciate that your fans, but...enough is enough. Leave Namine alone. Leave me alone. I'm not interested, okay?" He started away from them, toward Namine. If she was going back to the dorms, he was going with her. He wasn't leaving her on her own after this harrassment.

"You can't be serious?" Regina balked, "You'd choose her over us? Are you blind? She practically stalks you."

 

"It's fine, Roxas. I-I'll just go now,"she repeated, bowing her head as she started to run back towards the dorms. There accusations rang in her head again and again. Was it stalking? Did she come across as desperate? It had always been hard for her to build true relationships after what happened at Castle Oblivion, but she had always thought she and Roxas's relationship was different. Equal. Was she just bothering him all this time?

Roxas reached for Namine when she ran off, but obviously he didn't catch her. She wasn't at fault here. She was a great friend, supportive and kind and what he needed the past few days. His hands balled into fists and he turned to face Alexis and Regina. "I said that's enough!" he hollered, attracting attention from a few people nearby. "Do you honestly think that you are going to convince me to hang out with you instead? Do you really expect me to want to be near you after this?" He shook his head at them. "If I see you bothering Namine again, I'll report you for harrassment, got it?" He saw that at least Alexis looked frazzled, speechless. Good. Roxas was sick of hearing them talk. He turned to Lightning. "Thanks, for sticking up for Namine." She nodded to him and he took his leave. He was done with rehearsal anyway. It was time to find Namine.

Naminé couldn't run anymore, so she stopped behind one of the academic buildings that housed science classes. She leaned against the brick wall before slowly sliding down into a sitting position. Her lungs burned but her tears still fell, wetting the dirt ground. What was wrong with those girls? What was wrong with her? She buried her face into her hands. Maybe this college thing wasn't such a great idea after all...

Roxas started toward the dorms, since that was where Namine said she was going to be. But on his way there, he looked around in case she ended up somewhere else. Just as he passed a science building, he saw her. He stopped short, lips parting when he noticed her position. Roxas's eyes softened and he approached her quietly. He knelt down in front of her and placed a hand on her knee. "Hey..."

She jolted upright at the touch. It wasn't unfamiliar but the abruptness startled her. "R-Roxas?" she asked once his face filled her vision. The boy's concerned expression eased her pain a little. He had come to find her? "What are you...what are you doing here?"

"I came looking for you," Roxas replied gently. He squeezed her knee. "Can you talk to me, please?" He wanted to know what happened. Why were those girls picking on her? Why did they say those things about him and his interest in her? They were wrong, of course. Namine didn't really believe them, did she?

She sighed and leaned her head back against the wall."I was just looking for you to bring you lunch, and they approached me all of sudden. Said I needed to leave because they had 'dibs,'"Naminé made weak quotation marks at the word, "on you. I didn't understand what that meant at first, but then they kept telling me that I was stalking you and that you just felt bad for me and--"Naminé caught herself, taking in a deep breath. Her voice was strained. "I'm not the best when it comes to making friends, so maybe I am trying too hard? I mean you probably have a lot of people who want to hang out with you..."

Roxas's expression reflected his shock as Namine explained, and then he frowned. He lowered his gaze to his hand on her knee, but then he closed his eyes. "I'm sorry they did that to you..." he apologized lowly. "But...don't believe them. Okay?" Roxas opened his eyes and noticed the tear streaks on her face. He wanted to wipe them away. "You are my friend, and you've been great the past few days. I doubt I would have eaten if you hadn't brought me food." He chuckled softly. He was so dedicated to his music that he forgot to feed himself. It was pretty irresponsible of him, but Namine was there to make sure he took care of himself. He didn't deserve her.

Naminé laughed a little at his statement and sniffed. "I just care about you, and I don't want to see you end up sick. I know they have to be wrong, but..." She rubbed her forehead. How did she put it? She finally settled with a quiet confession. "They were horrible."

Roxas lifted his other hand and gently wrapped his fingers around the hand Namine had against her forehead. He lowered it so he could see her face. "They were wrong," he confirmed. "I care about you too..." More than you know.

She found his blue eyes then smiled weakly. "Thank you. I-I should be okay now." She sniffed again and dried her tears with one of her sleeves. She probably look awful now. Red, puffy eyes. Tear streaks lining her cheeks. She was so lucky to have him.

And if you're not, I'm here for you, Roxas thought toward her. He kept his grasp on her hand and squeezed her knee. "So...what do you say you and I go to this festival together?" he suggested. "I think you deserve a free meal from me, and what better food than fair food, right?" He would gladly treat her this weekend. She had done more than enough for him.
