Roleplay The College Chronicles (1x1 with aoi hoshi)

Lightning knew there was no point in trying too hard at this rate; the finish line was ahead and Riku was leading by a long shot. Looks like I’m going on that date, she thought. Her first date in, well, ever.

He was ahead. By a lot. Riku’s hands began to tremble slightly. The checkered band denoting the finish line was in sight. Riku pressed down all the way on the gas pedal, and it wasn’t until the screen declared his victory with bright gold lettering and a rainfall of confetti, that Riku finally let himself breathe again. He did it. Next Saturday, he and Lightning would go on a date.

Kairi came in last, as she expected, and looked at the times of the racers. Riku won. She looked over at him and then at Lightning. Lightning was smiling faintly. Was she happy about the date? Or was she impressed? Or was it something else entirely?

Lightning turned her head. Her eyes found the young man next to her. “Well, you won fair and square,” she told him, small smile still present. Riku has been confident in his win, and in the bet. Did he really want to take her on that date? Or was he just teasing?

Riku brushes a few stray locks from his forehead and grinned victoriously at the pink haired girl. “About time! Text me where you want to go next week, okay? Your choice.” The words felt strange but made him so happy? Is this how Sora always felt about Kairi?

Lightning felt her smile soften a bit. It was due to the expression Riku wore. He really wanted to take her on this date. At first she thought it was just a joke, a friendly wager that didn’t really mean anything. But...he looked happy about it. “Okay,” she agreed with a nod, her gaze shyly dropping to his chest. She wouldn’t pick somewhere expensive. She wasn’t that kind of girl.

Sora watched the interaction between the two with hands laced behind his head and a relaxed grin. It was nice to see Riku this happy. His friend had been through so much and deserved some kind of happily ever after. “I’ll take any leftovers,” Sora joked.

“Tch, in your dreams,” Riku shot back, shoving Sora playfully. “I’m going to eat my entire meal. Every last bite.”

“You’ll bring me back a doggy bag,” Sora said and pushed his best friend back.

“Speaking of food,” Naminé interrupted with a small cough, “Roxas and I haven’t eaten yet, so...where are we going to next?”

Kairi stood from her seat for the racing game. “Sora and I found a club not too far from here. They have food, and comfortable seats.” She saw Roxas sigh in relief. He must have been tired from all of that dancing. “Shall we go?”

Riku hesitated but found himself agreeing anyway. “I still don’t trust this other destination entirely, but...I could use a comfortable seat.”

Kairi linked her hands behind her back. “Yeah, well, you and Sora still owe me for that ‘Kairi special’ talk earlier,” she mentioned, eyes turning hard. She hadn’t forgotten that, and she wouldn’t for a while. She looked pointedly at Sora at the memory. Behind the anger rested a little hurt too. Was she really that bad when they were kids?

“Right, heh, heh,” Sora laughed nervously and scratched his cheek. They were in for it. He could just tell. Since they were heading to a karaoke bar, Sora could only assume that it had something to do with singing—which, Sora wasn’t particularly great at despite his experience in Atlantica. “Off we go!”

Lightning followed everyone out, though she did stop to pick out a prize for herself before leaving. It wasn’t much; she got a stuffed moogle she knew Serah would enjoy and a rubix cube for herself. On the way to their destination, they walked in groups of two. Kairi and Namine, then Sora and Roxas, and finally herself and Riku. She had already been pretty timid in his presence (which was odd enough on its own, since she was normally fine in front of the opposite sex), but now that they had a date the following weekend, she wasn’t sure how to act round him. He was...interested in her. In her. And not for a quick lay like the jock at the gym.

“Do you know where we’re going?” Riku asked with a wry smile. He wasn’t quite sure how he should be interacting with her right now, but saying nothing seemed weird too. Was she happy about the date? Or was it just because of the bet that she was going?

"No clue," Lightning replied, glancing up at Riku to see that smile. She shrugged. "It can't be too bad, right?" She looked ahead when the others slowed, and Lightning's faint ray of hope diminished. Karaoke? she thought in dismay. Oh no, this would not go well at all. Kairi smirked over at Sora and Riku, while Roxas scratched the back of his head. Lightning wasn't sure what to think exactly, other than that she knew humiliation was coming for a few of them. More specifically, Sora and Riku.

Riku pales and started to turn to walk the other way. “No way. No way is this actually happening. Not over my dead body.” Had he known they would be going to a karaoke bar, he would have faked being sick. Or gone on that extra credit field trip to the local museum. Anything else really.

Lightning reached over and grabbed Riku's hand instantly. "Hey," she called softly. She kept her grip gentle. "If I'm going in there, so are you." She wasn't going to suffer alone. She was sure Sora would agree. He and Riku did have to make up for what they said about Kairi earlier, after all. It was best to just get it over with now. Besides, what she said rang true--if she went in, so was he.

Riku felt his limbs grow soft at her touch. Annoyance laced his voice, but he quickly relented. “I suppose we have to face the music sometime, right?” He trudged into the little bar slowly but was secretly happy to have Lightning’s hand around him still. “Just nothing too...embarrassing, alright? And one song!” He held up his index finger.

"Yeah, yeah," Kairi called over her shoulder, making her way over to the booth to find a song. Someone else was already on the stage singing....and pretty horribly. Sora and Riku had nothing to worry about; karaoke was meant to be fun and embarrassing.

Lightning wasn't sure what to do now that her hand was in Riku's. Did she pull away? Did she hold on? Did he want to let go? When was the last time she had even held anybody's hand? Had she ever? Lightning fought a blush and looked around the large bar. It had seats everywhere, couches and chairs and tables. It was colorful, she had to admit. What other place had purple couches, or blue chairs?

“Wow,” Naminé breathed, “This is actually pretty big on the inside. Do we sit anywhere?”

A woman, dressed in a purple t-shirt with the bars logo on it, stepped up to them with a warm wave. “I can find you all seats. How many are in your group?”

“Six,” Naminé answered happily. The smell of freshly cooked burgers wafted from the kitchen near the corner of the bar, and Naminé felt her mouth water. She might not sing too much, but she would definitely eat.

“Right this way please,” the woman said, taking her pen and scrubbing something onto a notepad she carried in her back pocket. She led to a table near the front of the stage. Around them, other groups and couples were already eating and picking out songs from the tablets provided on each table.

Kairi ventured over to her friends' table after picking a song from the book near the bar. It was only when she got to the table and saw Lightning flipping through songs on the tablet that she sighed. She should have figured it would be more up-to-date than just a book. Oh well. She slid in next to Sora. "You guys ready for the duet of the century?" she asked her friends, smiling deviously. Sora and Riku were going to pay for what they said about her all these years--with public humiliation.

“We don’t exactly have a choice,” Sora mumbled with a visible sigh as he saw his name up on the screen next to Riku’s. The end was near. No escape. He and Riku shared defeated expressions as they walked onto the stage. The karaoke host handed them microphones as he announced them loudly over his own mic. Everyone turned to watch them with hungry eyes and phones ready.

After a few seconds of silence, the lyrics as well as the instrumental started. Riku nearly dropped the mic as he recognized the pink letters offered on the screen. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Naminé watched as the two boys sang ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ to one another. Sora appeared less distressed than Riku and even offered some accompanying theatrics that Naminé recognized from his memories of Atlantica. At his dramatic clutch of the heart, Naminé finally let out a flurry of giggles. She certainly hoped someone was recording this.

Kairi threw her head back in laughter, clapping at her friends. This was brilliant! Initially she and Sora picked this place just for fun, but this was even better now that her two best friends were singing a duet together. Roxas, thankfully, recorded the scene with his phone. Others around the area laughed in good nature at the two boys. Best decision ever

Lightning covered her mouth to fight her own laughter. As animated as Sora was, her eyes were drawn to Riku, naturally. The guy couldn't carry a tune, but at least he put in the effort.

At the end of the song, Sora threw a cheeky grin at the audience and looked back at Riku who held the microphone in one hand with knuckles growing white. “We made it!”

Over the crowd’s laughter and cheers, Riku answered the other boy. His face was bright red. “I should have expected you’d go all out for something like this.”

Sora shrugged. “Gotta go down with a bang, right?”

“Of course,” Riku shook his head, “You would say that.”

Kairi cheered for her friends along with the crowd before the next person went up. She could tell that Riku was mortified, but that was payback. Now that the score was settled, she was ready to have some fun as well. She sipped at a drink a waitress brought her and happened to catch someone eyeing their table as they walked by. It was a cute guy, but focus was only on Namine. He winked at the blonde as he passed, making his way toward the stage. I think Namine has an admirer.

Naminé flushed at the attention. Not quite sure how to react, she offered him a shy wave in acknowledgment. “What am I supposed to do?” She whispered to Kairi nervously. He wasn’t bad looking either...

Riku nudged Roxas in the ribs lightly when he go to his seat. From the stage, he had seen the interaction quite clearly. “Seems like Naminé is popular here, huh?” He knew testing the blond’s patience wasn’t the best idea, but he was sure the reaction would be worth it’s weight in gold. Roxas was a well-known hot head. Riku also would take any opportunity to draw attention away from the disaster of his duet with Sora.

Kairi smiled softly. "Take it in. He's cute!" she encouraged. If this guy thought Namine was worth pining over, that was great! Namine was shy, sure, but there was nothing wrong with feeling flattered.

Roxas blinked and looked from Riku, to Namine and Kairi, to the stage. A guy was definitely checking Namine out. Roxas's eyes sharpened. Yeah, Namine was popular. He wasn't blind--he knew she was gorgeous. Of course someone would think the same, but still... And by the look of things, Namine enjoyed it. Roxas crossed his arms and leaned back in his seat. Whatever.
