Smithee 327 Posted January 13, 2018 Personally, I can't tolerate a Hate Sink if they get away with everything (e.g.: Bendy from Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, Bill Hawks from Professor Layton And The Unwound Future, etc.). Sure, you're supposed to hate them... but it only works if they eventually suffer for the audience's catharsis; otherwise, they just leech enjoyment out of the story. 3 DarylTrect, lendaiteva and Craigkerse reacted to this

VisitJoan 2,713 Posted January 13, 2018 I like characters that punch people. It has to be somewhat justified though. The punch in days was horrible.
Mystics Apprentice 2,397 Posted January 13, 2018 I really like gray heroes, or antagonists that you can relate to and feel sorry for. I like most blue-haired characters (do they purposely do that . . . ?), and then characters that are sarcastically humorous and/or lazy but have a good heart. What I greatly dislike are tsunderes, helpless damsels in distress, and, most especially, empty invincible male heroes that are there for the sake of the plot alone. 1 The Transcendent Key reacted to this
The Transcendent Key 12,109 Posted January 13, 2018 (edited) Character types I like are the ones who have unyielding determination and don't break, even if faced with dire circumstances! I also like the comedic types, as they often lend lighthearted humor into serious situations, and they get into awkwardly funny situations, which also counts! I also love villains! I just find the villain character in media so fascinating! And I'm not referring to plain old mustache twirling villains, but more like the ones who have depth to them, who aren't necessarily bad from the get go, or ones who are forced to become the way they are due to circumstance. And really, villains have a badass air about them, and they are the ones with the most badass powers and personalities most of the time! I also like characters that have deep backstories or are knowledgeable! Types of characters I hate are the stubborn ones who never change despite anything world changing happening, or the type of character that thinks they are high and mighty and look down upon others. Whiny characters aren't my cup of tea. They may be funny and whatnot, but staying whiny just kills me. Ooh, also, I love a layered, human character that has flaws and everything, but tries to trudge on as best as they can. Capturing that is difficult a lot of the time, but when a movie/anime/cartoon/TV show nails that aspect in a character, it's just great! Smithee 327 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) DiZ; Saïx [still want him to be saved, tho.]) They're not intended Hate Sinks (but Ghetsis is), though. I think you mean "Unintentionally Unsympathetic." Edited January 14, 2018 by Alan Smithee
EchoFox23* 318 Posted January 14, 2018 I like my lovable jerks like Joshua and Neku, blue/orange haired dudes (Noctis), and characters with a tragic past (Roxas). Though I can't stand characters who push themselves on other characters (kinda like Namine but only worse and the girl doesn't have a clue usually. I do like Namine, just to be clear), characters who think they need to be stronger (in a bad way), "tough" girls, and just plain annoying characters. Iamkingdomhearts1000 1,170 Posted January 15, 2018 I like characters that don't kill their enemies and instead try to reason with them, make them see the positives in life, i like characters that are goofballs but prove to be much, much more then that when tested, i'll name those two character types for now. Lycoris 97 Posted March 19, 2018 (edited) I like grey characters, because they are realistic and interesting. I also like well-done jerk/rival characters. I dislike damsel in distresses and characters who fangirl over the main character. Edited March 19, 2018 by Lycoris
Harmonie 0 Posted March 28, 2018 (edited) Off the top of my head, I can say I actually kind of enjoy the trope of the character who is adamantly chasing after the protagonist. The character has some (typically) misguided views that the protagonist is a scummy criminal and needs to be brought to justice, but (usually) ends up seeing the wrong in their own stubborn ways by the end of the series. Examples include Inspector Javert from Les Miserables, Smoker from One Piece, Inspector Lunge from Monster, etc. Also a more silly version of the trope is Inspector Zenigata from Lupin the Third. The kind of trope I really dislike? The 'master' of a villain trope... I've only seen this example in anime/manga and will just list who I'm thinking of to help paint the picture: Babadi from Dragon Ball Z and Kira's father from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable. What makes this type of character so annoying? They sit on the sidelines and very annoyingly overreact to any danger (no matter how little it really is) to the villain. Kira's father is even more annoying, because he floats around in a picture, blabbering his mouth really loudly where the heroes should really be able to hear him, but no, he just floats away and comes back another episode. Also, I really don't care for protagonists who are just overpowered and... that's it. Like the protagonists from Seven Deadly Sins and Sword Art Online. I hate the SDS protagonist even more because he constantly gropes the female protagonist, but that's a complain for another topic, as it's not really a character issue, but a more overall issue. Perverted characters in general nobody likes. I can name a whole bunch of perverted male characters, but I do have a hard time naming a handful of perverted female characters. One of the perverted female characters that I can think are fan girls like Kadaichi Kuno and obnoxiously dumb characters like Patrick Star and Azusa Shiratori, both look like they would destroy an entire city for a quarter. Azusa pretty much beat up anyone just so she could her hands on something that she considered cute and Patrick Star, well there is some debate if he is actually dumb since there are online theories discussing if he is a psychopath pretending to be stupid just to get a free meal, a free spa date, whatever. Of course, I do get annoyed with the easily irate females like Sarah from Ed Edd n Eddy or Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2.
