I don't know about how direction plays into it, unless you don't know your left from your right. If that's the case, use your hands. You can make an L on your left hand that's how I learned.

Ah, they're changing the test in the UK, by the time I'm 17. So you have to navigate your way to a destination without Satnav, maps, etc. Though I get confused between my left and right too... .______.
