Film Reviews: Annabelle Creation

Recommended Posts

I don't usually write my thoughts or reviews, but a fellow KH13 member Sigrun kindly gave me a suggestion!

Okay lets go shall we, I'll try hard to keep the spoilers out

SO What is Annabelle Creation? If you're a fan of James Wan's horror films and have been keeping track of the 'Conjuring', the 'Insidious' and Annabelle film, then you'll know exactly what 'Annabelle Creation' is. The film is set as a prequel to the 2014 film Annabelle.

Annabelle is a the story about a doll named 'Annabelle' that has become a conduit for a malevolent presence and the 2017 film basically tells the origins of the doll and why it became haunted. Annabelle was first introduced in one of Wan's earlier film 'The Conjuring

The Horror techniques

Jump Scares: James Wan makes use of typical Jump Scare techniques, whenever there is a period of extended silence or lack of Music, brace yourself for a loud supernatural BANG. I've watched quite a few sueprnatural Horror films already so I'm somewhat desensitised to Jump scares.

The Tension: THIS is what is probably the most scary technique for directors of film and I think Annabelle Creation definitely did well to build up the tension in certain scenes. The music truly sends shivers down your spine with talented placement of bowed string sounds and the unsettling jingling of bells (which is symbolic in the film mind you)

Lighting and Music: Pretty well done, although sometimes I reckon the transition between day and night could be improved. I don't have much to comment on the music since....horror music is horror music (more Sound effects)

Cameos

Remember Valak from "the Conjuring 2"?

This demonic Romanian Nun appears twice in the film...

Noticed how I put emphasis on 'Romanian', because there is another Romanian nun in the film (Sister Charlotte).

interesting to note that she's going to get her own film called 'The Nun' in 2018

The plot

READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

The Past:

Mr Mullins used to be a Dollmaker who made handcrafted dolls. He had a daughter named Annabelle and together with his wife lived happy days of the past. It all changed one day when Annabelle got into a car Accident and it was implied fatal. Ever since then Mr and Mrs Mullins wanted to find a way to contact their daughter. It wasn't clear how they managed to contact her 'daughter' but apparently when they managed to contact their daughter, the daughter wanted to reside within the doll Mr Mullins made to which they allowed. However with time they realised that what they allowed into the house and to inhabit the doll was not their daughter but a malevolent force. SO they eventually had priests and clergyman come in and seal the doll away using sacred rites in one of the cupboards of their house.

The Present:

Basically a bunch of kids from an orphanage and a nun (Sister Charlotte) seek residence with an old house owned by the man named Mr Mullins and his Wife. Mr and Mrs Mullins wanted to get a fresh start and forget about what happened in the past and so decided to welcome others into their house to stay...with the rule that their daugter's (Annabelle's) old room remained locked with nobody to enter. However that was a big mistake as the doll 'Annabelle' was able to use its demonic powers despite being 'sealed' and thus was on the search for a soul to take.

From here on the film is pretty cliche and predictable with Annabelle's room unlocking itself, the orphans getting terrorised one by one and heaps of other supernatural incidents. I won't go through what happenes since thats for you to watch and to enjoy/experience BWAHAHA

I will however let slip a small spoiler. The ending is not your typically horror ending and it leaves your scratching you head....'what happened between Annabelle Creation, Annabelle and the Conjuring'?

Overall I give the film about a 8/10 because the tension created by moving dolls and demonic nuns make me poop my pants.

Much better than 'Lights Out' which came out 2016, also by Wan

OKAY ~ have fun pplz :D

Wasn't Annabelle also the daughter in Annabelle 1, who attacked Mia and John after killing her parents for that cult?

Supposedly her blood drips onto the doll after she gets killed, making it evil, and leading to the demon possessing it.

So what's this about another Annabelle dying, and making the doll evil? Is this thing just going through random women named Annabelle and knocking them off, or is it just a plot hole they're ignoring for sequel sake?

And how the hell the thing ended up in a thrift store is anyone's guess: you'd think a doll linked to a possible murder and cult activity would be kept in a police evidence locker, not sold off to the first random passing by.

One of the characters in 'Annabelle Creation' shares a close relation to the daughter in Annabelle 1 that you mentioned.

Also, the malevolent spirit inhabiting the doll can temporarily possess vulnerable people, kinda like body hopping if you like.

And once the host perishes or dies the malevolent returns to the doll like a 'home base'

There's a scene in Annabelle Creation which shows the doll being free of evil because the malevolent spirit has left the doll and latched itself onto one of the characters.

By the end of the film its assumed the spirit has returned to the doll. Plus the ending of Annabelle Creation coincides with the start of the first film. (huge spoilers there)

Have you heard about "the crooked man" film or "the Nun"?
