Firaga 5,947 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) This movie, as I've come to learn, is not only another King Kong movie, but also the second in the now established in Legendary Entertainment's new monster movie shared cinematic universe which officially started in the 2014 "Godzilla" film. I never saw Godzilla '14 (probably will at some point now that I've seen this) but I've heard good things, as well as bad things. Either way, it made a ton of money and it's no surprise that Legendary would want their own CU. It's all the rage nowadays. As for this film in particular: well, it's got a lot of good, recognizable actors, good looking visuals, Kong looks impressive, the monsters look ferocious, and it's a bit of an alternate take on the property (if you recall, the original Kong story was set in the 30s while this is fast forwarded to the 70s, and I really doubt anybody's taking a trip back to New York and putting Kong on display and whatnot, though I could still be wrong). One big thing about this film concerning Kong himself, as I've also read, is that he takes a lot of inspiration from his original 30s incarnation while still attempting to retain modern elements and overall be timeless. He's described as a "lonely God, he was a morose figure, lumbering around this island". Clearly, there's a bit of seriousness that the movie is taking (I mean, how can you not, it's centered around an island full of freaky natives and giant monsters) but also a little bit of campiness (mostly from John C. Reilly's appearance), which works in the film's favor because that's also very reminiscent of the original 30s film. So then, thoughts? HeyMouseSayCheese 1,133 Posted November 23, 2016 It looks a lot more fun than I'd ever expect a new King Kong movie to be. Looks like some really cool giant monster action with pretty good effects- plus John C. Reilly has me completely sold on it, he could pique my interest in any movie. Side note- I'm all for every movie company getting their own cinematic universe. If there's anything Kingdom Hearts has taught us it's that crossovers are A+ #1, and it seems to work really well for every company that does it. (Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be patiently waiting for a new King Kong vs. Godzilla movie.) 1 Firaga reacted to this
BlankShell 638 Posted November 23, 2016 Digging it. Godzilla '14 was pretty good; some of the human characters fall by the wayside, but it captures the overall mystique and tone of Godzilla very well. That said, this reminded me a lot of the 2005 King Kong movie with Jack Black, so hopefully it manages to distinguish itself a little more. That movie was underrated. At the very least, Skull Island looks a lot more colorful than the Peter Jackson one (I liked that one well enough, but it was too long and too gray for my tastes). Plus, it's been like 11+ years since the last one came out, so even if it is similar, enough time has passed that I'd be okay with it.
The Transcendent Key 12,109 Posted November 26, 2016 Well, this is interesting, human! It looks like this giant ape is aiming to make a return to the silver screen to leave all humans in awe! And it looks like all other manner of foul monsters are gonna come out and play! For goodness sake's, though, let's hope this is the last time we have to begin the big ape's story again! I think that since Legendary is aiming to make a Monster Cinematic Universe, once Kong's introduced here, he'll be peppered out from time to time, so as to not repeat the discovery of him in Skull Island again!
