Souls Games (Dark Souls/Demon Souls/Bloodborne/Etc...)

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping to Cthulhu I'm not the only one who loves Souls-like games and yet gets annihilated within 20 minutes.

They're very fun and rewarding games with an interesting storyline (if you can find it. It's there, you just need to look. I promise.)

Anyway, if you were wondering what defines a "Souls-like game," here's the basic stuff (not a be all, end all list. Please feel free to make suggestions.)

-Has a linear storyline.

-Has gameplay that is tough, but fair. The laws of the world are very clear, but everyone follows them, including the enemies.

-Usually set in a bleak, dark atmosphere.

So let's talk Souls games!

I think my favorite by far would have to be Bloodborne. I love the idea of werewolves and disease plaguing a town and then steadily drifting into a Lovecraftian atmosphere . It's dingy. It's gritty. It's weird.

And I love it.

DS2 was free on Xbox Live, so I bought it.

I died like 20 times on the second level when you are in those houses. Never played it again xD

DS2 is considered the weakest because it doesn't really follow the rules set by the previous game. It messed up a lot of stuff that made the first game so rewarding and fun (in a weird masochistic way.)

I recommend any game besides 2. lol

My favourite would have to be my very first souls game, the first Dark Souls. It was an experience unlike any other game i had played- the characters, the lore, the beauty of the environment-especially the contrast between places like New Londo and Anor Londo- and finally the gameplay and music. I genuinely took several months to beat this game but i fell in love with the series.
Most people complain about DS2 but i personally enjoyed it. I still feel like Vendrick deserves more love from the fans, since his story is pretty sad and he clearly made some huge, important discoveries. Just a shame Dark Souls 3 practically pretends the events of DS2 never happened.

Souls is my second most loved game series, right after Kingdom Hearts. I have played Demon's Souls, All Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I don't want to brag, but I actually do because I never really get to brag about this: I have every achievement from all of those games and I've done Soul Level 1 runs in all the DaS games and a no death/no bonfire NG run in DaS2. I just love those games.

My favorite of the all is Dark Souls 2. DaS1 was my first Souls game before DaS2 was even released and I really enjoyed it, but after DaS2 was released I couldn't really go back to DaS1 because some of the game mechanics were improved so much in DaS2.

I want to have a civil internet fight about this subject. What are these "rules set by previous games"? I admit that there are couple of things they did wrong, like soul memory being a thing and full red/blue eye orbs not available, but PvP in DaS2 is the best in the series and that is why I love it.

Play it, love it, can't get enough of it (save Demon Souls, because I've not really had a chance to play it yet). The first game is probably still my favorite, but I have a soft spot for all of them, including Dark Souls 2, which, if it has its share of flaws, I still feel did a lot of things right. I'm one of the few that actually liked the health bar going down as you die, because it makes sense with the concept of hollowing and slowly losing your ability to hang on. Not to mention that getting summoned in it felt ten times easier than it did in DS1.

Oh, I've stumbled upon this hallowed, depraved universe, human! I had heard talk about this dark, atmospheric series, and being a dark being myself, I just couldn't pass this up! So a friend of mine from the other dimension gave me the first Dark Souls as a present, and I played through it!

Let's just say that it was a wild ride and an awesome experience! Even though I'd die multiple times, I'd still come back until I'd triumph! The game took me a few months to beat, but hey, with a being who's lived as long as myself, it's really not all that much time!  But yeah, I felt very accomplished! I finished the first Dark Souls with a Level 107 Knight, with about 90 hours logged in!

Good times, good times!

Now I just need to get the other Souls games! B)
