Voice Acting Help

Recommended Posts

So I've been thinking about this for a while and I thought I'd talk about it on here. I wanna try voice acting. From what I hear there are a lot of people who try to do voice acting and fail, but I wanna try and give it a shot. If it flops, it flops. No big deal if I don't get asked to voice act. But on the off chance I do ok or well I at it, I wanna give it a go.

The reason I wanna try is cuz I can actually do some weird voices and some animal sounds as well. Also whenever I do them, people give me surprised looks and/or ask how I do it, so I'm guessing they're not normal for people to be able to do.  A few of the favorite ones I can do is a cute but creepy cartoony voice, a creepy deep voice that sounds like a demon (but I can't do it for long or my voice will start to hurt and I'll get into a coughing fit for the rest of the day, probably won't be able to use that one much unless I can train myself to get used to it more or will have to really space out using it), and a realistic cat meow (I've actually fooled people into thinking there is a cat around with it. I also did it to a cat that wanders my neighborhood and it looked at me puzzled for a while and then stuck to me like glue whenever it heard me meow in the future). I love doing my voices and sounds and I feel like it'd be fun doing voice acting with them, and earning some money on the side with it wouldn't be bad either.

The reason I'm talking about all this and bringing it up here is that I don't really know where to start and would love it if anyone here who knows about the business could help me. The only thing I can really think of doing so far is recording the different voices and animal sounds I can do and posting it to my social media accounts to get attention to it, but I don't know if there are other better places to put it and how to charge for my work. So if anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it. :3

I would start online and get some practice in. Also, take acting/singing/writing lessons. Voice acting is more than just making silly voices, you're playing a person or creature with emotions and that needs to translate in your voice. You also need to understand the character you're playing, so writing might also help. There are groups on Facebook where aspiring voice actors do fandubs. Try joining a few of those. You can even charge for your services.

Lastly, there's a site where you can drop voice samples. https://www.castingcall.club/#/

You will need a good microphone and editing software. You can download editing software for free.

As for the professional business, it's very competitive and it doesn't pay a whole lot. The main studios are in Texas, Florida, California and New York, so if you don't live in those places, you'll have to move.

Thanks for the reply with all that info! I know it's more than just silly voices, just wanted to throw out some of the different voices I could do if needed :3. Lessons would definitely help me to improve though.  I don't really plan to do it professionally, just as a side thing for now. I know that the professional side is really tough from what I've heard so unless I somehow magically do super well I don't plan to do that.

No problem! I'm happy to help out.

Voice acting is pretty fun and hard work, but it's awesome to bring a character to life.

Good luck!
