Yes, benevolent gods are okay, but I will reiterate what I said before, I'd prefer there to be less of that and more of the other races. Regardless, do as you wish I'll likely accept wholeheartedly whatever you put up.

As for the Rod being locked up, it would be for security reasons. Elves are a generally peaceful folk, and when it landed in the hands of elves centuries ago, the King at the time put it away for its destructive and chaotic abilities, seeing little reason as to why he should keep it around for wartime or assassinations or whatever. He eliminated it from the bank and royal records soon after.

I agree with this explanation for the rod.

Sounds good to me, then. The Penitent One will pop up when the Rod is picked up.

Double post but here is a dump of appearances for the definitively plot important NPCs in play right now (any NPC can become plot important depending on character action)

Also as a treat, here is a lecture on Magic Theory 101

Magic is split into two schools. The Old and The New. The Old was formed millenia ago, by enterprising mortals who noticed oddities in their environment. The New was created by an Elf one thousand years ago because of his skepticism towards the tenants of the Old. They have many of the same tenants such as the requirement of vocal casting and ability to enchant objects. But they come from entirely different sources of magic.

The Old was studied in the ancient days, when mortals learned of the Spirits and their powers. The Spirits are immortal, intangible, and invisible beings that reside on this plane and another at once, and when their name is evoked their power can be wielded by mortals of this world. A prime example is when Phato cast the fireball, she evoked the name of Vulcan. Spirit names are the most basic of spells, and the most elementary of Old Style Mages master this first. This power was spurned by Gods who found that the power of the Spirits was inferior to their own and useless. But as mortals studied further, they found that names were not the only things that created Spiritual power. By speaking the language of the Spirits (which could once be seen in archaeological sites and artifacts, but in the years it has faded away) in combination with a Spirit's name, more and more effects could be created. These spells were eventually shortened to purely the Spiritual word, the name becoming implicit in the meaning. Let's use an example. Ryonne's pendant is activated by Currere, or run in Spiritual. The full name of this activator is Mercury Currere, because Mercury is the Spirit that the run spell uses the power of. A final key to the Old System is length of spell, by enacting a full chant, the power behind the spell increases more than speaking a few words, however often takes longer and is more difficult to maintain concentration.

This is the full list of Spirits and the type of spells that come from their power:

Jupiter: Invoking Jupiter's name summons a blast of lightning. Spells that find their root in Jupiter often have to do with wind, electricity, and strength.

Juno: Invoking Juno's name is meant to bestow good luck to a married couple or a pregnant woman. As such, it is said at weddings and births. Few spells originate from this spirit, the ones most of note are fertility spells. Also of note are spells that are meant to be counters, or enact specific vengeance, but these are rare.

Neptune: Invoking Neptune's name creates a blow of water. Spells that come from Neptune involve water, ice, storms, and earthquakes.

Ceres: Invoking Ceres' name will cause a plant to grow faster and stronger, but not by much. By invoking her name following another spell originating from her power, like one that creates vine tendrils swiftly, it will grow much more swiftly and stronger. Spells from Ceres involve the use and growing of plants, as well as food.

Minerva: Invoking Minerva's name will create a temporary shield around the wielder. It is weak and short in duration. Spells from this spirit are used to create defensive barriers or to provide insight into strategy. One frequently used one, Conspicere, shows a weakness in the enemy.

Phoebus: Invoking Phoebus' name will cast a light healing spell. Spells of Phoebus are generally used to heal people, but higher level Phoebus spells can conjure pure light energy.

Diana: Invoking Diana's name will cast a single energy arrow towards an enemy. Her spells are used to either summon more of/a different variety of these energy arrows, or summon Spiritual animal companions.

Mars: Invoking Mars' name will cause the wielder to go into a physical berserker state. Spells from his name are often used to summon Spiritual weapons, or to increase martial skill temporarily.

Venus: Invoking Venus' name can cause short term attraction between a weak-willed target and the user. Spells originating from Venus can do the same in higher powers, or cast illusions. Love from Venus spells is false, and are known to consistently end in unhappiness.

Vulcan: Invoking Vulcan's name will cast a fireball. His spells create other fire based attacks, or are used to bless or enchant the forging/creation of items.

Mercury: Invoking Mercury's name will teleport the user to a destination within ten meters. Spells from him do the same in higher powers, or increase dexterity and speed. High level Mercury spells can increase a caster's aptitude to be trusted.

Bacchus: Invoking Bacchus' name will cause a short term intoxication within a target. His spells often induce similar states, but can also do other mental based attacks. Most importantly perhaps is the Bacchus blessing over a shipment of alcohol (Vinum), which ensures it become good drink.

Pluto: Invoking Pluto's name will cast a bolt of dark energy. Pluto's spells are dark and lead towards evil doing if one is not careful, but they cast a variety of other dark energy and can raise the dead.

Player's Guide for the Old System: Either say a short phrase, keyword, or a chant in Latin, and say what the spell does. I'm not going to be fussy about consistency in what certain keywords do from person to person. Do not feel the need to say the Spirit's name before a spell name if you do not wish to.

The New System of magic was created by an elf a thousand years ago by the name of Scientia. He didn't believe that the Spirits existed, but decided that he had to find some other explanation for magic. In his experiments, he crafted the New System. By binding words to effects in scrolls, wands, or spellbooks, one can use Common tongue to cast magic spells that would otherwise require Spiritual. The New System manipulates what Scientia believed to be innate power within all beings, and by matching it to a desired effect can be used to cast a spell. The New often requires much more magical skill than the Old, but can be used in a wide variety of ways because of the spell crafting system. There are only so many spells in the Old because no one truly speaks Spiritual. But by matching effects to Common words or really just an assortment of sounds, there are a near infinite amount of spells one could create, and one is limited only by their imagination. However, a keyword for one New mage may mean something entirely different for another one. This is because a New mage must record the keyword and its meaning either within a wand by holding the wand, speaking the word and imagining the effect (this can occasionally cast the spell outright, so must be done carefully), or written in a scroll or spellbook. A scroll can be passed to any mage, but wands and spellbooks are personal to the mage. Spellbooks need not be read, but must be in possession. Wands must be waved alongside the spell invocation.

Player's Guide to the New System: The New System is about as free as can be. Say a word or phrase and cast the spell. I only ask that for consistency, that when doing this you have a spellbook, scroll, or wand (staves, blades, really any physical object can become a wand) in your possession. Also, I'd prefer that when you cast a spell with one keyword, that that spell and that keyword only be used together, not interchangeably with other words or spells. Of course, I'm not going to be a jerk about it, that's a helluva a lot to remember. If you can't be bothered, I don't really care. I just like that kind of consistency.

As a final note, the Old and New systems of magic are not exclusive.  A mage can know and utilize one, the other, or both. Now then, have fun!

If you're a mage, then you should know magic theory. Even if you're not, the basics aren't difficult.

Henry's a spellsword more than anything, more trained in sword and meele combat more than anything.

I guess I could have him know the new magic theory >.< only slightly though.

Henry's a special case because of what you outlined in your bio, he's not trained in traditional magic, was simply granted magic power. It could have been a gift from Pluto.

Well, I will only need to change the name of the Spirits in the few spells I have in my notes, and perhaps make a few new ones with these new Spirits.

Good point.

Henry's magic power has been given to him since birth, and he only has the seal which suppresses it. Otherwise he'd be an uncorrupted anthony xD

Though I do plan on having him copy the regular elements with his custom dark energy.

Sounds similar to Anthony, just without the agonizing, deep corruption and all, you know. xD

Well, I will only need to change the name of the Spirits in the few spells I have in my notes, and perhaps make a few new ones with these new Spirits.

I created the lore in order to help myself and other people feel like there was some system and order to the rules of the world, while not limiting the creativity which I saw most explicitly demonstrated in your posts. I do hope I managed to succeed.

Anthony was corrupted by a God of Darkness (who will be met soon), and thus his magical power is actually Godly in origin. It thus does not obey the rules of Old or New magic.

Hmmm... Seth must be a special case too. Unable to make his own magic, rather a conduit for it.

Seth is unique I agree. I'd suggest his abilities stem from his own created New magic, and he simply prefers it to traditional spell-casting. That way it makes sense that he was able to forge his own magical weapon too. Alternatively, his powers could have the same origins as Henry, that as the gift of a spirit.

Character Sheet:

Name: Agni, God of Flame and Sunlight

Age: Unknown

Gender: Male

Race: God (Defected from Dayben.)

Appearance:

ihBbQ8Z.png

Different Angle:

soul_of_cinder.jpg

Abilities:

Searing Flames: After his namesake, Agni is capable of manipulating and conjuring burning flames of great power and in many forms. Fireballs and Flamethrowing are his most basic forms, yet he can use them both in inventive ways and different strengths. His Fire Breath has a greater range than his Flamethrowing, but is more concentrated and requires more wind-up, i.e: Inhaling before usage. Firebolts are faster, but weaker Fireballs that he can use frequently, usually when at a greater distance, though he prefers to engage his enemy at a closer range, which would be where his Explosive Grab comes in. This move, if he lands the grab, can cause a violent explosion of flame point-blank upon the held target, which also blows them out of his grasp. If he's allowed to focus his power, he can use stronger attacks, such as summoning Flame Geysers with a punch to the ground or a AoE Explosion of Fire.

Sunlight Spears: His power over "Sunlight" manifests differently to one's expectations: It appears as Yellow Bolts of Lightning to the uninitiated, yet their potency is greater and their sounds distinctive. This power is his own invention, his mastery over this power was enough for his title to be extended, so it is to be feared. Agni tends to use at least three variations of Sunlight Spears: A simple, straight-thrown at his target Bolt, quick in execution, a downward, small AoE slam of a spear and the third one: A long wind-up, upward throwing of the larger spear that soon forms into a cloud that swiftly rains several Sunlight Bolts upon his foe. The last one takes the longest and is the most powerful.

Sunlight Spears can only be used in his "Lord of Cinder" mode.

Weapons: Firelink Greatsword (Pictured in the lower Appearance Picture) - Agni's weapon of choice, this blade is rather long, but it is no trouble for a man of his stature and height. It is imbued with his Flames, yet it is not a simple blade, it is in fact a transformative weapon that can:

- Extend the blade's length massively, turning into a "Pike" weapon and replacing his "Searing Flames" for Holy Miracles.

- Reverse the weapon entirely, using it as a "Staff" and using Sorcery instead of "Searing Flames".

- Curve and shorten the blade into a "Scimitar", increasing his agility at the expense of Defense and Strength and he keeps his "Searing Flames".

Or, finally:

"Lord of Cinder" Mode: His most powerful style. Focusing all his power, he transforms his weapon into a massive Claymore-like Greatsword, covered in flame. In this mode, he cannot use the other styles unless he reverts to his base style but he gains access to more Flame Abilities, his Sunlight Spears and his Explosive Grab. This is his most aggressive Style, the usage of it means Agni shows great respect for his opponent. He also gains a "Fury" attack, that has a very long wind-up, but if it makes contact, allows him to juggle his opponent several times and finishing it with a sword stab to the ground, causing a AoE Fire Explosion. His defense is terrible however and he's more susceptible to counter-attacks and parries.

Personality: Wise, eager for battle, sincere and caring, Agni is nothing like the Gods invading the world and slaughtering millions. They alienated him years ago when Dayben and his wife assumed control of the leadership of the Gods, taking their, in his mind, undeserved place as King and Queen of Gods. Agni was among the most proud of the Gods of the people below, of the progress they made and the things they accomplished under their watch and as such, he has the utmost respect for them...and their right to be left alone. Ironic that the God most eager for combat is the one that opposes conquering and killing the Mortals, but that is the way it is, as Agni believes in honourable combat, not the slaughter of millions of people just wanting to live their lives in peace and relative harmony.

Bio: Among the first Gods to ever live, Agni observed as the first Humans, Elves and Greys began to flourish, to create and to prosper. He saw every success and failure made, but as they ultimately rose, he was proud of them. The Mortals were like children to him, but he wouldn’t treat them any less for it. When the Gods departed from the World for many hundreds of years, he knew he would miss the Mortals, but he was perfectly willing to allow them to live on their own, in peace.

Sadly, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, as some Gods held the ideal that they should’ve stayed and instead controlled the Mortals, or among some of the first corrupt Gods, used for sport or as playthings. Agni, the God of Flame and Sunlight, reprimanded them frequently, believing they should just be left alone to grow and prosper, as he saw himself and his fellow Gods as guides and watchers, not Tyrannical Rulers or Puppeteers who don’t know when to let go, or even how to.

It only got worse from there over the years, more Gods subscribed to the mindset that would soon drive two Gods to ambition: Dayben and his wife. Together and with help, they overthrew the original King and Queen of Gods, usurping them and killing them, then took the thrones as their own and pushed for more Gods to support their twisted crusade. Agni wouldn’t have any of it, but he had lost too much support to take on the new regime built on blood, the majority against him and his words muted by the cries for death and destruction. Ashamed at his inability to stop them, Agni exiled himself and defected from Dayben, retreating to the Mortal World way before the invasion began.

Here, he created a small area for himself to reside in, planting his Blade into the ground as a Bonfire and sat at it...he has remained there for years. Silent, watchful and past the brink of despair and shame. Now the Gods have come, for two years they have laid waste to the world, cutting a bloody path through the Mortals, some even siding with their invaders…

And yet, even now...a sliver of hope has worked it’s way into Agni’ heart and will compel him to call anyone willing to take on the Gods to his location...maybe this can be stopped and ease the burden on his soul.

Miscellaneous: Agni’s Firelink Greatsword can be planted into the ground and used as a Bonfire (see lower Appearance image), to provide warmth and a soothing feeling to all near it. A mocking title given to him by Dayben, “Weakling of Ash and Cinder”, has since been taken into pride with his “Lord of Cinder” mode as a defiant act against him. He also has taken a liking to the Mortal’s food and drinks.

Let me know if any adjustments need making, details adding and stuff. I'm pretty happy with this character overall. :)

Accepted! As a fun note, since I don't recall if I mentioned it in the OP, but the Ruler of the Gods is based purely upon strength. Dayben won his seat fair and square by defeating his predecessor and any usurpers in battle. I wouldn't say this means that Dayben is the strongest of all, as not every God desires the seat, but it puts him up there.

Character Sheet:

Name: Sirona Malgony

Age: 25

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Appearance (don't sweat it if you can't find an image of gray skinned people, just use a regular image and say they have gray skin):

maxresdefault.jpg

Abilities (this includes magic, godly powers, or assorted abnormal skills): Taps into the rare magical element of sound. Sonic magic allows the user to use harmonics to effect listeners' mood, inspiring bravery, causing fear, evoking love, etc.. Can entrance the weak willed. Can be used more directly on offensive with sonic blasts and sustained "screams". Can be used to scan an area like sonar. Can also deaden sound to the point of silence.

Also taught a little Healing magic.

Weapons (Greys use only a single weapon, make note of whether this is the weapon they've had since the ritual or not): A tomahawk with a selection of throwing daggers.

Personality: Charming, laid back, friendly, secretive, cunning, heart of gold, and pragmatic.

Bio: Sirona was born to performers for the Oasis Heart Carnival, a popular traveling act known all over the world for their death defying acts, exotic performers, and fantastic displays. What only a few knew was the Carnival's other business, which was little burglary and information gathering. Going everywhere and being engaged by powerful people, the Oasis Heart managed to learn many secrets, and sold them and their services to loyal clients. Sirona grew up among the entire carnival, learning a verity of skills from the acts, like acrobatics, tumbling, slight of hand, juggling, and so on. She acted as a pick pocket and scout for the carnival until her rare magical talent showed itself. With her angelic voice and natural talent for all instruments, she became a leading act and agent for the Oasis Heart. For Sirona, life was a ball. Until two years ago. With the return of the gods, the assassination of old king of Kala, and growing tensions among the elves, the cast and crew of the Oasis Heart Carnival decided it was too dangerous to keep on, thus disbanded to spend their amassed fortunes in the time they figured they had left. Except for Sirona. Feeling that she wouldn't have long to enjoy her riches with how the world was going, she decided only a fool could turn their back on it. Now, still not being a fool, she recognized she had little hope of fighting against the gods herself, but the whole matter of a certain deposed prince of Kala seemed both doable and song worthy. On her way back to Kala, hoping this to be the first of many songs.

Miscellaneous: Primary instrument is a Rauschpfeife, though can use her voice to preform the magic.

Sometimes uses a whistle in battle to save her voice.

Theme:

A grey character might be coming as well. Still debating.

Name:  Khayal Athar

Age: 27

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance:

bFJQKuc.png

Abilities: Skilled in the art of shadowmancy, sometimes using said shadows as solid weapons or literal hiding places. Also skilled in ancient magical rituals and the creation of poisons and antidotes.

Weapons: Uses different types of weapons, but is more efficient with the Kukri.

2016091148305692.jpg

Personality: Naturally introverted, quiet, spiritual, loyal, calm, secretive.

Bio: A young man born into a clan of desert dwellers known only as the "Shadow Folk". Athar's people have been known as guardians of the desert folk for hundred of years, helping those who stray from the path, are attacked by raiders and bandits, or are close to the gates of Death, they were hired as assassins and bodyguards, couriers and spies in the past. He is a quiet person who doesn't engage in many social gatherings, which is normal for his people, but he is always ready to help those who are in danger. The Shadow Folk have long opposed the gods since time immemorial, finding their rule a tyranny for the different races of the world. In the past, when the Shadow Folk were more in number, they fought to help those under the rule of the gods, although many perished on such missions. Athar tries to keep the principles of his people by helping those in need, even after the cowardly assassination of the King of Kele by his brother Aleksandr's own hand and the return of the Accursed Gods. There are whispers in the winds of the desert about Prince Nikolai being alive, which would explain the strange bounty on his head, so maybe the Prince could be the answer to the current situation on Kele.

Miscellaneous: He loves to wander the desert at night, and to stay away from crowds. His natural introverted behavior makes it easier for him to blend in the background, he could be there in a second and gone the next, like smoke on the wind. Athar takes great pride in his fighting skills, which he learned from his Mentor back at the settlement. He values family bonds above anything else, not necessarily blood relations, but those bonds made through the experiences shared with another person or group of people. Shadow Folks share a close bond with each other thanks to them being such few in numbers, that doesn't mean they can't form new bonds with those of the other tribes. They are fiercely loyal to each other, willingly to choose death over betrayal, which would be a great sin among the clan.

I had to dive into my old folder for a reference for the appearance, but in the end I liked that one. Goddesses bless the Sheikahs and their mysterious ways.
