Geoff Keighley on No Man's Sky: What Went Wrong?

People falsely assumed that this game was going to reinvent gaming. They were wrong. People are smart enough to see through marketing for most other games. Why was this the exception to the rule?

I don't think they assumed anything. It's just that they were promised a lot of things in the game and they didn't get it. Just imagine that all of the gameplay elements that we've been promised to have in kingdom hearts 3 and when the game finally comes out, they're not in the game. It's the same thing with no man's sky

I'm not arguing against the false promises that the creator made, I'm arguing against the hype that was created for this game without the marketing, The PR mouthpieces were nothing more than amplifiers for people's unrealistic expectations for the game. It was overhyped and over-promised by the people who waited for the game in the first place.

People went beyond that false hype and promise and thought that it was going to be even more than what was just being said I guess. It's been known to happen for some games. Like uhh, look at Watch Dogs for instance. A somewhat decent game but was SUPER overhyped as well. Along with the graphical downgrade (which I don't give a damn about personally), dull as shit main character, and the pretty cliche standard story (as well as multiple other complaints) people were, naturally as the internet is these days, outraged. People thought for some reason that there was so much more to the way the game worked with the whole hacking thing and what not, but I mean it's not that spectacular. Just like No Man's Sky's features aren't that spectacular, what's there anyways.

Yep.

People getting hyped quickly and not looking at information/pre-order immediately, hating on people if they critic said overhyped game and then complain about it almost immediately after they play it is nothing new. No Man's Sky isn't the first nor will be the last time such a thing is going to happen.

Precisely that.
