She was never bothered by the surrounding darkness, or the faint light within. Nothing mattered to her anymore. She shunned both the light and darkness, even turning her back on the dim twilight between. She was never truly at home anywhere, and never bothered trying to fit in among the people of the light or darkness or in between.
He was tempted by the darkness, if only to escape his life as an islander. It was only after opening the door to darkness within he was able to realize his mistake. With a new resolve, he swore to himself he would chase the residual darkness out of his heart and reclaim what he once lost. No matter what, he would make things right again.
A girl with no clear path.
A boy seeking the light.
The true path to destiny begins here.
Finding Light in Darkness
The young girl stared down at her shadow. Even after all this time, her darker image was the only one standing beside her. Not surprising. In the beginning, she wasn't alone. There were actually quite a few people standing beside her. It was the last time she had known true happiness.
And then it happened.
Everyone had fallen to the darkness, never to be seen again. Only a select few remained aside from her, and now they were lost, too. Ever since then, she walked her own path. It didn't matter to her where it took her; she had no place to call home, no one to call friend, nothing. The only things she had now were her life and her shadow.
She walked on, closing her eyes. I don't even remember the last time I sat down or even slept. Like I've been walking for the past 12 years. I don't suppose it makes any difference. I have nowhere to go.
When she reopened her eyes, she found herself in a rather familiar empty void. Nothingness as far as the eye could see.
Drifting not too far away was a young boy. She tilted her head at him. He was a curious individual, in his mid-teen years as far as she could tell, with medium-length silver-white hair. On his upper torso was a yellow shirt with intersecting suspenders that stopped mid-chest and baggy blue pants on his legs. His shoes were an odd type of tennis shoe that were yellow as well.
She walked closer to his body, which was floating gently in midair. His eyes were closed serenely. He must have come here unconscious, since he didn't appear to be in any pain.
Then his eyes flew open, and she could see they were a blue-green color. They took in her face and he started up in an upright position almost instantly. "Where am I? Who are you? How did I get here? Where's the king?"
"Hey, hey, calm down," she said, raising a hand at him. "Losing your head when you don't know the first thing about your situation only leads to more trouble."
He frowned, then shook his head. "What is this place?"
She shook her head as well. "As for that, I can't tell you. Kind of ironic, since I've been here a lot."
He looked at her more closely. "You've been wandering in the darkness, too?"
"I've been wandering wherever my feet take me," she corrected rather harshly. Better give him a reason not to get attached to her. "It doesn't matter to me whether I've been traveling through light or darkness."
He blinked, then looked up in surprise when they heard another voice. This one was a great deal darker. "Go back to sleep."
Just one new face after another, she thought to herself. "Who's there?!" the boy demanded.
"You should remain asleep," the voice recommended. "Here, between light and dark."
"Between...what?" the boy wondered.
Odd, she mused silently. I never thought neutral grounds like this would look like nothingness. We must be deep in the realm between for things to look this cloudy.
"The king!" the boy suddenly gasped. "Together we closed the door to darkness. After that--"
"You came drifting here by yourself. You did not have the strength to overcome the darkness. Or...maybe you were close to it," the voice suggested.
"Hmph," the boy snorted. "As if I'm some kind of demon."
"Turn from the light. Shut your eyes. Here blanketed by the darkness, sleep is safety. Sleep is eternal. But..."
Both of them had to shut their eyes tightly when a bright light shimmered before them. When she reopened her eyes, a light blue card was hovering around them. "What's this?" he wondered.
"I've seen one of these," she murmured, leaning closer to examine the object. "It appears to be a card of some kind."
"It is a door to the truth. Take it and your sleep ends, as you take the first step towards the truth. But know this: the truth will bring you pain. Will you still go?" When no one spoke, the voice went on, "There is no return to the security of sleep."
"In other words, he takes the card and there's no turning back," she noted wryly. "What will you do?" she asked him.
He paused to gather his thoughts, then reached out and took the card. "This seemed like a boring place to take a nap anyway," he frowned.
"That was very well said, Riku."
She had to shut her eyes again when the card shone as brightly as it had before, and when the light had vanished, both she and the boy were standing in the middle of a white room. The room was very plain, with only a simple design on the walls and a small staircase leading up to a pair of large double doors.
She lifted her head somewhat to sniff the air. The feeling of this place was just like the void they were in, but the degree of neutrality had increased greatly. Standing on the epicenter of the realm between...right where my feet are. How is it possible I'm still here?
"A door to the truth, huh..." he mused, looking down at the card. Then he looked up at her. "You have any idea where we are?"
She shook her head.
"Well then, I guess we're working together until we both get what we're looking for," he shrugged. "That OK with you, kid?"
She shot an annoyed look at him. "Don't call me kid. And I suppose I have nothing better to do, anyway."
"OK, then," he nodded, frowning a little. "I'm Riku, by the way."
She looked down at his proffered hand, then took it in hers and shook it. "Hikaru."
"Hikaru," he repeated. "All right. Let's see what this little thing can do."
