Fates Chance XIII 307 Posted November 2, 2014 (edited) The Boy in The Black Coat By: Fates Chance XIII A mournful sigh escaped my lips as I left the library and walked into the sun lit street. “Stupid back pack!” I thought, shoving the half dozen books I’d checked out back into my bag. “Can’t go three feet with out it opening again. Stay closed!” Giving the books a final shove, the zipper slid the opening shut, and I threw the bag onto my back again. Even with this triumph, I couldn’t help but give another exasperated sigh. “I don’t see why they have to give us so much homework.” I thought, “We only get a month of summer; and its hardly a break if we have homework.” As I walked out into market street, the sun shined right in my eyes, worsening my mood. “You would think,” I thought, “that living in a town where its freaking sunset every day, that I’d be used to it. What I’d give for a change of scenery…” Shielding my eyes from the sun, I continued out of the alley way, and into Station Heights. My eyes wandered up the slope that lead to the station, and my thoughts wandered with them. “I would so love to go to the beach…”I thought, “I haven’t had the chance all summer, and I wont get a chance when school starts…” Tearing my eyes away, I told my self sternly, “No, I still have my math and science homework, not to mention my independent study. I need to get this done, or mom will let me have it.” I started walking again towards the tram commons, but stopped and looked back. “But…but when will I have another chance? Maybe- maybe I could slip off to it before going home? Yeah-yeah! I could go, and come back before dinner, and finish my homework then! I have the Munny. I’ll just have to drop off my stuff at home and-” At that moment, the sudden appearance of a boy at the top of the slope tore my attention away from the beach. “How did he-? WHERE did he-? It must’ve been a trick of the light or something…” I thought startled at having seen the boy suddenly appear in a flash of swirling black smoke. As the boy drew nearer, I saw he was dressed really odd… “Who in their right mind would wear a black cloak in the middle of summer?” I thought, “He must be sweltering under that.” The boy came down the slope, walked right past me with out giving me so much as a look, and down market street into the area of the Tram Commons. I couldn’t help my eyes from following him as he walked, I had never seen him before. He wasn’t from my school, and he looked to be my age…and that coat…Why was he wearing that coat? No one I’d ever seen in Twilight Town wore clothes like that… Taking a step to follow him, I tread quietly so he wouldn’t hear me. The strange boy had very spikey blonde hair, that seemed to have been styled intricately to point every which way- even vertically on the top of his head! “Must use quite a bit of extra strength hair gel.” I thought absent mindedly. The boy walked down to the small candy shop, and rang the bell for service. I was too far away to hear, but the boy seemed to be ordering and reaching in his pockets to pay. But when the boy pulled his hands out of his pockets, he had nothing in his hands. No wallet, no loose Munny, nothing. The boy looked at the clerk dejectedly, said what I could only guess was an apology, and slunk away- his shoulders slumped. He turned to walk up the stairs to the upper levels, and in doing so spotted me watching him. Turning to face me, my heart sunk at the look on his face. His face was handsome, and he had deep, beautiful blue eyes- but he looked so…sad. His handsome face was lined with worry, his eyes red and puffy, and he looked so angry. But not a furious kind of angry, a hurt, and broken angry was painted on every crevasse of him. Having must have been creeped out by my staring, he turned away and started walking to the upper levels. Looking away from him, I felt a frown cross my face, and my eyebrows furrow on my face. “What happened to him?” I thought, “Must be having a real bad day…” My eyes went back to him, and I saw the boy walk into the back alley. My hand reached into my pocket, and felt the smooth fabric of my Munny pouch. Taking it out, I counted it contents and thought. “Enough for a train ticket. Or…” I thought as I finished counting. I looked from where the boy had walked, to the candy shop, then back to my Munny in my hand. Swallowing hard, I put the Munny in my pouch, and ran towards the candy shop. The clerk greeted me and asked what I’d like today. My mind made up, I said quickly, “Two of what ever that boy just ordered. And some extra napkins.” The clerk smiled, “Two seal-salt ice creams then. Coming right up!” he said as he went to get them from a cooler in the back. My stomach sunk a bit, and a small frown lined my lips. Taking out the last of my summer allowance, I counted out the exact total of the ice creams. I would still have a bit left over, but not near enough to get me to the beach. “You’re doing the right thing.” I thought forcefully, trying to not to back out. The clerk brought the ice creams in a bag, took my Munny, and wished me a good summer before I jogged to where the boy had walked. He had gone up the stairs, and down the alley where the shop keepers kept the empty boxes to be picked up. I ran up the stairs and hopped there wouldn’t be any of the infamous bees that seemed to infest there from time to time. As I walked into the alley, I saw the blonde haired boy sitting on the ledge in a dark shadow, holding his legs to his chest. Taking a deep breath, I walked slowly up to him, and sat right beside him. The boy jumped at the sound of me, and looked at me with those big blue eyes wide in shock and surprise. “Who- who are you?” he asked in a tone to match his expression. I took out the blue ice cream and shoved it in his direction. “Here.” I said smiling. The boy looked from me, to the ice cream, to me again. “Who are you?” he said. “This is the one you wanted right?” I said. “ I saw you trying to pay, and you didn’t have your wallet, sooooo- I bought it for you!” I gave him a large smile, “You looked like you’ve had a pretty rough day, I thought I’d try and…. I don’t know…cheer you up.” The boys face softened, and a small smile crossed his face. He took the popsicle with a black gloved hand, and said, “Thanks.” “No problem.” I said taking out my popsicle. “I’ve never had this flavor before, is it any good?” The boy was unwrapping his as he said, “Yeah, it’s really good; it’s my favorite.” His face went all screwed up, and he looked very angry. “My friend actually gave me one, the first time I tried it.” It clicked in my mind what he was upset about as I unwrapped my popsicle. “So, you and your friends having a fight?” I asked. “Is that what you’re upset about?” The boy nodded. “That’s not so bad.” I said with a small shrug. “Could be much worse.” This statement seemed to have the opposite effect I wanted as the boy started to scream at me. “No, it can’t BE! My friends, my best friends have bee lying to be for months!” he yelled, a half sob croaking in his throat. “I found out a little while ago, and I just…I just can’t forgive them.” he turned from me and took a bite of his ice cream. I gave a small pause before saying, “How long have you guys been friends?” “Practically my entire life.” he said in a voice just soaked in sorrow. “Woooow…” I said in amazement, “Wish I had friends like that.” The boy stayed quiet. “These friends of yours, they’re your best friends right?” The boy nodded. “Then it shouldn’t matter.” The boy turned and said, “But they lied!” “And you’re angry, and you have every right to be.” I said, “But I bet there have been times when you lied to them. Or hurt their feelings, or said something wrong and made them angry with you, right?” The boy didn’t answer. “Riiiiiiight?” The boy paused as though in thought and answered, “….Yeah.” “And did you guys hate each other forever?” The boy shook his head no. “Right. Because that’s what best friends do. They get on each others nerves, they drive each other crazy, they make each other mad, they fight, but then,” I nudged him and he looked up at me, “but then, they come back together, and they work it out. They forgive one another, and thing may not be exactly the way they were before but, you forgive each other. Because you’re best friends. You love each other, you care for one another, and you can’t stand to see each other be hurt.” The boy shook his head, “It’s not that simple…” “Maybe not. It’ll take more than just some nice words, it’ll be really hard, but you’ll get there.” “But they LIED to ME!” the boy said, his voice full of anger. I nodded, “And running away from them wont make that any less true!” I said, “You’re angry, and again, you have every right to be but please answer me this.” The boy nodded expectantly. “Do you still love them?” I asked. The boys eyes widened, “What?” “Do you still love them? Look deep in your heart and ask your self, are they still the people you knew before you got angry with them? Do they still make you laugh, make you feel safe, have your back, make you feel…” I paused to think of a word but the boy said suddenly- “Whole?” “Yes!” I said, “Exactly!” The boy looked away from me, and sat there thinking; occasionally taking a bite of his ice cream. “I know it wont be easy, but don’t you think if they’re really your best friends, if you really care about them, and them about you, that you could give them another chance?” The boy finished his ice cream, and looked down at the stick. He gave a small laugh, “I won.” he said in almost a whisper. I looked at the stick to see that it did say in small lettering, “WINNER!” Signifying that he would get a free ice cream upon taking it back to the candy store. He handed it to me. “Here, you take it.” he said looking at me with a small smile that made his face light up. “Yours is all melted, you deserve a new one.” Looking at my popsicle I saw that it had melted right off the stick in the summer sun, and fell onto the boxes below. Giving a small laugh, I took the stick and said thanks. The boy got to his feet, his smile gone from his face, and replaced with a look of slight sadness. Getting to my feet, I asked if he was going to be okay. The boy nodded, and said, “I don’t really know what I’m going to do from here, but,” he looked at me with a small smile, “you are right, they still are my best friends. I know it’s not going to be easy, but…I do still care about them. And I still want to be with them… Thanks.” The boys eyes seemed to see through me and go far away. Smiling, I leaned forward and gave him a hug. “It was no problem. Everyone needs a friend sometimes, even if it’s one you don’t even know!” The boy gave a small chuckle and turned to leave the alley. “Thank you.” he said, “I’m Roxas, by the way.” Stretching out my hand, I said, “I’m Carra. It was nice to meet you Roxas!” He shook my hand, smiled, then turned and walked out of the alley with out another word. “Roxas…” I thought, “What a unique name…I don’t think I‘ll ever meet another one.” Walking out into the street, I saw the boy had seemed to vanish. “I hope he find his friends, and makes up with them…” I thought, walking over to the candy shop. Handing the popsicle stick to the clerk, I could feel a warmth rising in my chest, and a small smile across my face. Taking the free popsicle, I unwrapped it. As I unwrapped it I thought my self, “It was worth it. To see that boy smile, and give him a light in his day, give him a friend- even a temporary one….it was worth ten times that beach and that Munny.” Taking a bite of the ice cream, my face lit up in a wide grin. “Salty…but at the same time…sweet.” I thought turning, and heading for home.
