Discussion: A Kingdom Hearts Movie?

Recommended Posts

So SkyWardwing posted this today and I thought: This would make for a great topic. Take a look:

SWW does bring up a lot of good points with this topic; There is the risk that Hollywood, as it is now, could ruin the series and tear the story to pieces. And what if it was adapted in the wrong medium-say live action? *cringes* Sky does say that if an adaptation were to happen, he would like for it to be its own unique story. While that is a good idea, I see a few problems with that; One, lets think of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. That movie was great!-for those who actually knew who the heck the characters were. FFVII:AC was made for the fans of Final Fantasy. Its not that well known of a movie outside of the FF circle. And of those who have seen it, it wasn't that well received by a lot of people. Thus, it kind of fell by the wayside. Imagine if that were to happen to a KH stand alone movie like that? I don't think it would really hurt the series as a whole, but it would be known as the Kingdom Hearts movie that failed. Now I, for one, actually do believe that an adaptation of the series is really possible. Let's take a look at a prime example; The Lord Of The Rings. For decades, people had wanted a movie of Tolkien's beloved tale, but, at the same time, were also afraid of one. Simply because the masses claimed that the story as a whole was un-filmable. Well, they were right-for the time. Many studios and companies tried and failed to adapt the massive work-some, having all three books as one movie. All failed, with the passible exception of Rankin/Bass. (And please, don't anyone get me started on the  Ralph Bakshi monstrosity. >.<) Anyway, after decades of waiting, the Good Lord blessed us with a mastermind-Peter Jackson. Pete, was just as much of a fan as the next person, and paid considerable respect to Tolkien's hard work. What he gave us was a masterpiece that likely will not see its equal in the next 100 years. So, I've said all that to say this; With the right director, who has just as much love for Kingdom Hearts as we do, and with the right people, company, producers, backers, script writers, actors, and so forth, I think that a movie can happen. And, when you think about it, I'm quite surprised it hasn't been done yet. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we saw a movie in the next 10-15 years. Why you may ask? Well, lets look at what's trending in Hollywood; video game adaptations. Within the last two years or so, several video game adaptations have been announced to be in the works, or have rumored to be. Of the ones I know are being adapted: Sly Cooper World Of WarcraftAssassin's CreedSonicUncharted (I think)Now, we all know how Disney loves to jump on the next money making bandwagon, right? Well, my theory is, if all these adaptations make it through, and if they are successful enough, then Disney might take notice. Since KH is half owned by Disney, I see no reason why Disney wouldn't at least consider it. KH is, after all one of both Disney's, and Square Enix's better known video game titles. Its made a lot of good money for both companies and the fans love them. In closing, I think both Disney and SE would see Kingdom Hearts as a good way to make more money if they were to adapt it into a movie, or a series of movies at the very least. What are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? No contest? xD Discuss it out below!

If there's going to be any Kingdom Hearts movies, they should take place between games. For example, I could see them make a movie that occurs after the events of 3 but before the events of 4. That's how I'd do it.

Look to be honest, I'd like it if they made it a separate thing from the games. Or maybe a retelling of the events in the form of a movie. No matter what wither it sucks or not I'm stull gonna watch it. I doubt it'll be as bad as that bloody stupid Airbender movie.

Based on what we've seen of Sony's work on the video game adaptation movies they have in the works, I think they could handle a kh movie. I don't think it should be a retelling of a game or an original story though, I think it should give us new lore for the series, based on Xehanorts past (how he went from a regular old student to the madman we see in bbs, as well as events going on during the series where we only have a vague idea of what happened)

I'd like it if they made a CGI-animated Kingdom Hearts movie. The movie could be a continuation, set after KH3 and telling us what happened after defeating Xehanort, like what they did with FFVII: Advent Children/Complete. I honestly wouldn't mind it at all.

I would like a KH Movie....but less like the game, and more like the Manga. Throw in more interactions: let them have verbal fights, let them take showers, let them read magazines, FREAKIN' LET DEMYX AND ZEXION PLAY TWISTER AGAIN! xD That way, it would give us a more in-depth look into each character's perspective and how they live, instead of just being a rehashing of cutscenes.

OMG YES! That is exactly how I would imagine a Kingdom Hearts adaptation to go! More a line with the manga than the game.

I could see it like this as well. It could also be used to establish the evolving tone of the franchise, since I bet the next Saga will feel very different from this one.

I know it will never happen, but I would personally rather have an anime show based on the games.

omfg yes, all of myyyy waaaaant!! This would be the best way also to implement elements from the manga, since you could easily have filler episodes involving the chars doing interesting/fun things. i'd honestly watch hundreds of epis of it.
