Golden Fighter's Reviews: Final Fantasy!

Recommended Posts

Hey there everyone, how's it going?  Well then, as you all may know, recently I've been playing the numbered Final Fantasy titles, and currently I was playing the first Final Fantasy, and I'm proud to say that I beat it today!  It was a satisfying feeling to beat this game, and I finished it with twenty hours and five minutes of gameplay, and with my party at Level 85!  I had a blast with this game, and I wanted to write my review for the game!  Alright then, here it goes!

So then, Final Fantasy is the first entry in the long running RPG franchise that has become wildly popular around the world, and this first entry was first released in 1987 for the NES, and later on received various ports, of which I played the PSP version.  The game tells the story of four Warriors of Light, who come to the land to restore it to light, since the world has been slowly decaying because of the four Fiends: Lich, Marilith, Kraken and Tiamat.  To basically sum things up, you have to restore the four crystals to grace and save the world from darkness.  You end up fighting Garland, who was once a knight of Cornelia turned evil by his ambition for power.  This is the most simple Final Fantasy title, as there isn't way too much character development or things of the sort.  The game is straightforward and simple, and the story isn't a super mega triumphant story, but it isn't anything cheap either.  Trust me, it'll be worth your time.

Basically, that's it in terms of story.  Now then, let's go to the gameplay.  Anyone who has played a Final Fantasy title or most RPG's out there know the drill.  Battles are played out in turn based affairs, and you use the four Warriors of Light to defeat the enemies that stand in your way.  From the beginning of the game you can name your four characters and choose their classes. The ones I chose were Warrior, Thief, Red Mage and Black Mage.  There are a few others you can choose at the beginning, but choose wisely, since after you choose your class, you can't change it.  To get stronger, you defeat enemies and gain experience points and level up.  Most bosses in this game aren't too particularly hard, but be sure to grind a bit for the final two Fiends, and especially when you have to fight against Chaos.  I beat the game with my party at level 85, and the reason I had to grind so much was because I lost trying to beat Chaos every time.  To get stronger and build up your defense,  you buy weapons and armor in shops around the world, and that's basically how you get around when it comes to combat.

As for world exploration, you walk around the World Map, encountering towns, castles, ruins and caves.  Overall, it's fun, and later on during the game you obtain many different means of transportation, the Airship being my favorite.  One thing you'll notice about this game is that you generally don't know where you have to go.  All you know is that you have to find the dungeons where each Fiend is hiding, but other than that, you don't have that much direction aside from what villagers from towns tell you.  I liked aimlessly exploring, but after a bit, I got a little frustrated for not knowing where I had to go.  Not knowing where I had to go upset me at times, but overall, the exploration was fun.  Overall, the game is fun to play and a great way to kill time.

So yeah, that's all I have to say concerning this game.  This is the game that gave birth to the worldwide phenomenon known as Final Fantasy, and it's a great RPG for old school RPG fans and for newcomers to the genre.  The nostalgic graphics are great, the music is hum worthy, and the vivid colors catch the eye. Overall, this game is pretty good, but it's not the best Final Fantasy game of all time, but I can honestly say that this one is better than Final Fantasy III, at least in my opinion.  So for all of you looking for a nostalgic trip down Square's past works, Final Fantasy is the RPG for you!  This has been my review of Final Fantasy, Golden out! :D

Interesting fact: The game was supposed to be Square's last game before they went out business, but the game ended up saving the company and we got a franchise. Great Review by the way, I hope to see more of these.

Actually that might not be entirely true, Hironobu Sakaguchi thought that it would be his final game.
