A problem I have with most online roleplays is combat with NPCs. Given the lack of dice rolling to determine effects, most online rps rely strictly on the players to decide what happens during a fight. Now, it stands to reason that most players aren't fond of the idea of their character dying, especially if it's just in an average run in against some stock baddies. The problem is, though, is that without that tension of potential loss or threat of death, there's really no point to combat in most encounters. You simply mow through the Heartless or goblins or what have you, and that's that. I suppose there's no real way to necessarily solve this without actively using more D&D-like rules for combat, because you can hardly demand that every odd-numbered player has to have htier character die in order to make the situation tense, but at the same time, I think a lot of players should consider the prospect of having their characters fail every now and again. The added suspense and tension to a battle could only make it more interesting in the long run.

sadly though, the thing about a lot of forum-based roleplays is that there isn't really a trusty way to roll the dice for your characters success have there not be anything implemented in the post for that (someone could be lying if they do the rolling off-site and whatnot, and you would have no way to prove otherwise)

I don't mind all too much, of course it depends on how often they do it and how their character is balanced? Some people do like to put their characters on the loosing side, but I guess that differs from player to player. If nothing really comes out of it though (character development and whatnot), battling NPCs does become a bit redundant.

On your original rants, I'd say it depends entirely on context.

Solely being set in the future doesn't mean that melee weapons become impractical. I mean, in Star Wars, swords are THE most effective weapon. Because they are laser swords. Additionally, weapons like swords have been used in various media at a means of focusing abilities. Chakra, or magic, or what have you.

And unless the world the story takes place in IS Earth, all manner deviations can be made to a world to accommodate for things. Perhaps this world uses a type of projectile weapon that swords of that world are particularly effective against?

I mean, this is fiction, you cna do whatever you want. Literally.

Now, if somebody chooses to break the rules set by the person making the story, that's just disrespect.

Well, best thing to learn how to do before you roleplay is write. That is the step that most people seem to skip these days. As long as you listen and English class, assuming your teacher is a good one, you're getting closer and closer to being set for knowing how to write.

For everything else, though, here are a few guides:

http://www.rpgfix.co...-roleplay-guide - Definitions and examples of things that you shouldn't do in a roleplay.

http://how-to-roleplay.blogspot.com/ - An old blog with some tips on roleplaying and writing in more detail.

http://rpedia.tumblr.com/ - A newer blog with some tips on roleplaying and writing in more detail.

http://bad-rpers-suck.livejournal.com/ - A blog where people complain about their bad roleplay experiences.

Other rant blogs:

http://godwhyrp.tumblr.com/

This will probably be edited later. Reason being is that I forget where all my firetrucking guides went, and I really can't be bothered to go on a google search keywords hunt.

Things you should probably do to help you roleplay: Watch other people. Maybe not me in particular (since I've never really had a great experience here and most of my roleplaying is from my more shittier days) but people who actually seem pretty good at it. These may come from sources far and wide. Maybe they play DnD, or WoW. Don't be shy to just lurk.

I learned a lot from this. This should be in the rules for Role Play, I totally have not been RPing right at all. Thanks for this, it's a big help.

I shall offer my wisdom!

(Let's see here... add my wisdom modifier of 4... damn, rolled a 1. And the DC for good advice was a 10.)

My advice is: when in combat, don't attack your allies!

(Sorry, that's what the roll says I know. No metagaming)

ew. one liners.

One thing I have to say even though I'm not "RP expert":

You really don't need to put things like personality and history to character sheet

Why?

Because there is thing called bio: It already explains who your character is and what he does, how he has became to whatever he is now and what kind of guy he is.

And if you necessarily want to put those theme songs and all that stuff then put it to "optinonal" stuff, it's annoying to fill them and people just put their favorite songs anyway without caring that does it fit on their character at all...

So this is your nightmare character?

Name:

Age: 10

Weapon: Sword

Skills: Master Swordsman, Shadow Manipulation

Appearance: Handsome

Bio: He is an enigma. Nobody knows his name or his past.

Personality: He's a lover, and a fighter (Like Sora!).

Wow... this is the first time in all my existance in KH13 than i used more than 5 likes per day.....

Now getting to the point.. i agree, really is just that people don´t want their character dead or kicked out on a battle... seriously that makes the plot soooooooo slowly... sigh, another thing, if you are going to use a game, serie, or etc etc etc,.... at least do things according to the plot universe, i mean really? swords and katanas in TWEWY? when they used phones, boards and even pins in the original game, or worse.. pistols on and rp of medieval times ... meh...

TWEWY uses pins to slash, and the best (As far as I know) weapon in the game is a samurai sword (Gives you 999 attack)

But... IS a PIN no a sword in fact... :P

But... IS a PIN no a sword in fact... :P

If it functions identically to a sword, and s effective, then there is no reason why a sword would be impractical

Agree with everything except number one. Swords in a futuristic setting make everything better.
