A couple of months ago I downloaded the Android version (Nintendo DS remake remastered) of FINAL FANTASY IV for my smartphone. And what I experienced could only be described with one word: "epic". FINAL FANTASY IV is the true definition of a "classic video game" or an "epic video game". With it's amazing story and revolutionary gameplay by Hiroyuki Ito it truly set the bar high for future entries in the series. It's no wonder it's the only game in the series to get a remake of this scale.
Ito's Active Time Battle System brings a much faster pace of action which is still used in games developed more than twenty years later. And the story full of Star Wars references helps make this come full circle.
However this game isn't perfect. When you complete a map 100% you obtain a item, however a lot of the time you'll find yourself searching through an area once again just to find the last one percent. The story isn't perfect either. I felt too often they make a character appear to die only to return a couple of hours later. Sure, it's nice to do this a couple of times, but the amount of times they did it was too much I felt. The remaster made the game look great, however there were moments when you could clearly see it was a Nintendo DS game originally. Sometimes during cutscenes, some attacks looked a bit "pixely". However the cutscenes were still very enjoyable with fine voice acting. The remade Lunar Ruins were also a nice touch for a remaster.
It's no surprise to me that FINAL FANTASY IV is the 2nd most ported title in the series.
All in all, FINAL FANTASY IV is a legendary video game and one of the greatest JRPGs of all time.
