“You could never understand all I’ve been through! You’ve always had everyone to back you up, by your side… You’ve never had the pain of losing someone dear to you!” said a tall, young man named Matt with an angry tone, clearly demonstrating that it had been a long time since he wanted to say that.
“That’s true, but—“replied the other man, named Hytt, a few years old, with a desperate tone.
“I won’t fall for your mind games,” the nervous man interrupted, angrier than ever before. “It’s because of you that this all happened! While I lost everyone, you were always full of love around you! But it’s all going to be over in a few minutes!”
“What are you talking about? Didn’t my parents and friends love you? Didn’t they take you to live with us when all of your family died in that car crash?!”
“True enough,” said Matt “yet, I could never have the love they had for you… I was always in second place… No one would see me as nothing but as an orphan. Maybe it would have been better if your parents hadn’t taken me to live with you. Through all of these twenty years, I’ve been watching over you carefully. While you never showed any interest in working, without mentioning the fact that you had the worst grades, you were still loved by everyone. That I cannot and I can never understand. With me it was the other way around. I have always been a success, I couldn’t afford to depend on your family forever, and I had to prove everyone that I could live by myself, even though I was only taken by Katy and Harry because they felt like they owned me something.”
“What? Are you mad? How could they “own” you something? They’ve never done anything wrong in their lives…” replied Hytt, showing signs that he doubted what his “brother” had just said.
“Oh,” replied Matt, in an ironic way “I should’ve known they would never tell you what they had done. But do not worry, you’ll find it out now.”
Just as he finished this sentence, Hytt heard the door shut behind Matt. Someone had locked the two of them inside that room.
“What’s this?”
“Oh, Jessica played her part. It’s a shame I’ll never get to thank her for that.”
“Jessica? Why would her—“
“Shut up! Listen to this story and you’ll live more!”
***
It was a beautiful Friday. Ester’s favorite day of the week, because she could just relax for two days before returning to her boring routine. It was also the start of the small amount of time she had to share with her little baby, named Matt, after Ester’s grandfather, who had passed away a few months before her baby’s birth. However, just as nothing is perfect, this Friday ended being one of the worst days for them.
Daniel, Ester’s husband, a 49 years old man, with silver hair (he refused to paint it), and blue eyes, which had once been sparkling, because now they were as dead as his love for her, arrived at home at 1a.m. He had drunk a lot that night, and Ester woke up because of all the noise he had made while trying to get to their room.
“Daniel? Drunk, again? I can’t believe it—“
“Shut it! You can’t control me, woman…”
“What is that on your arm?”
“Blood, have you never seen it before?”
“Don’t tell me… You had a fight with Harry once again? This won’t end well. Please, be more careful.”
“Careful?? He told me to stop drinking because “we can’t have people like you in a place like this” and then I punched him on the face, and then… you know what happened.”
“He IS right, and you know that! Don’t you think of our son? He’s just a baby, but he’ll grow up. Do you want him to have a drunken father? I certainly don’t.”
“You don’ have anything to do with what I do or don’t! Now, shut up and let me sleep.”
“No, we have to sort you this out!”
Then the neighbors heard a woman screaming. It was Ester. Daniel had just punched her so that she would shut up and let him sleep. Days passed, and the situation became worse. He would arrive drunk at home every Friday, Saturday, and even Sunday (she tried to tell him he couldn’t because he had to work the next day, but he kicked her).
Harry and Katy started to get more and more distant from them. They decided that they needed to get them out of their neighborhood somehow.
“Our son can’t be raised while there’s a man like that around!”
“Of course, Katy. We’ll have to do something. Let’s wait till the time is right.”
“Okay. I just hope it is as soon as possible.”
Fortunately or unfortunately, their chance came one month later. The situation couldn’t be any worse; Daniel had gotten involved with drugs, spending all his money on them (even more money than he actually got from his job). Everyone had started to ignore him and Ester, and talk about them behind (and sometimes in front of) them.
It was June 24th. Ester’s son first birthday was just two days from that day. She had bought some gifts for her baby, and was preparing a cake when Daniel arrived. He was completely drunk, and had used a lot of drugs. He did not know where he was. He had lost control.
“Let’s go… to… bed…” he approached Ester, holding her neck and trying to kiss her.
“Let me go” replied Ester, trying to get his hands off her, even though he was stronger than her.
“Go to bed, NOW, your –“
“I’m going, just a second, I promise.”
“You have one minute or I’ll kill you.”
That was enough. She could not bear to live with him anymore. But she wouldn’t be safe by just leaving the home with the baby. Who knows what he’d do; go after her, kill both her and the baby? It was just too dangerous to flee. “No… I’ve got to put an end to this.” thought Ester, before she headed for the baby’s room and put something in her pocked. Then she headed to her room.
“I’m here, Dan.”
“Oh,” he said, with a completely different voice from his usual one “come here, won’t you?”
“No! I’ll finish this. You can’t be allowed to live any longer. You only bring pain to me! Today is your day.” said Ester, as she took a gun from her pocked and aimed at Harry.
“What?” he replied, as if he had started to regain control over himself “you’re going to kill me?”
“I love you, but I—“
She didn’t finish this sentence. Harry jumped at her and managed to get the gun from her hands. It was only then that she realized how mad she had become. Kill her husband? She burst in tears and could barely speak. Harry was still out of control; he aimed the gun at the window, in the direction of Harry and Katy’s house, and then shot, hitting their window.
“Who is the boss now? Did you really think you could kill me?” said Daniel, as he got Ester and put the gun over her neck. “I should kill you.”
“I-I—“
“Don’t say anything. I’ll make this quick for you.”
Harry and Katy had arrived on Daniel’s house. Luckily for them, Daniel had left the door unlocked, and they got inside just in time to see Ester’s body lying on the ground. She had been hit by five bullets, and was still with her eyes opened, but they were sure she had died. But where was Daniel? He had gone to the bathroom, to wash his bloody hands.
It didn’t take five minutes for the police to arrive. Daniel was leaving the bathroom when he caught a glimpse of Katy and Harry crying over Ester’s lifeless body, and locked himself in the bathroom. But once he heard the police talking to them, he unlocked the door, aimed his gun at a police man, shot him right on the head, and then he started running. He was totally mad. He was sent to jail, promising to kill Harry and Katy once he was set free from his time on there. He thought it was them who had called the police, but it had been, in fact, their other neighbor, Jessica’s parents.
Katy and Harry could not bear to live with the chance of being killed anytime. They knew he wouldn’t be on jail for a long time, and even if he was, their baby would still be alive and they were sure he would try to kill them.
Matt had been sent to an orphanage, since he had no family member to live with. Harry secretly managed to contact a prisoner, who shared Daniel’s room. He promised he would pay a vast amount of money if he managed to kill Daniel. And so he did. Daniel was killed during a “fight” during launch. Harry paid over $25,000 to the man who killed him.
It was over. They were finally out of Daniel’s reach. However, there’s one little thing that would bother you as long as you knew someone died because of you. It was Harry’s conscience that forced him to adopt Harry, and raise him together with his only son.
Years passed, and together with them, Matt’s hatred of this world and jealously of Hytt’s life turned him into a cold person, totally freed of emotion. He pretended to be his best friend when near him, and managed to get everyone to believe that. He always tried to be better than Hytt, but he only had success at school, where his grades were not only better than his “enemy’s”, but the best of the class. Teachers loved him, but that wasn’t exactly the love he wanted.
It was finally when he was 19 years that Harry told the entire truth to him. This brought him more hatred than anything before. If he could, he would get a knife and kill Daniel. But he couldn’t. He needed to plan how he would get his vengeance. And it couldn’t be killing Daniel, he had to strike where it would hurt more. He had to kill his son and archenemy, Hytt.
“It’s past, Matt. Forget it; killing me won’t bring your parents back!”
“I know, but it’ll bring the same pain to Daniel, and there’s nothing better than that”
“You’ve gone mad, just like your father.”
“Don’t talk about him! I was going to keep our conversation for a little more time, but I see that I cannot.”
“What are you going to do? Shoot me like your father shot your mother?”
“Sorry, but no. I’ll put this on room on fire and wait until the fire finishes you off.”
“But you’re locked here as well, you’ll die, too!”
“… When did I ever say that wasn’t part of the plan?”
“You’re totally nuts! Stop this and I won’t tell anyone about this!”
“SHUT UP!”
Jessica heard Matt’s scream, and returned to the door she had locked a few minutes ago. Was she really right by doing this? She loved Matt, but was this really right, helping him kill someone? She heard the noise of the gasoline being thrown on the floor. A few seconds later, she heard the smell of fire. Then she heard screams, but from the voice, they were all Hytt’s. She was still unsure of what to do. It was only when she heard a scream from Matt that she finally unlocked the door.
His right leg was on fire, and Hytt was gravely injured. She managed to take Hytt out of the room, but she had bronchitis, so the smoke was too much for her. Hytt came back and even injured, managed to rescue Matt. The neighbors called the fireman, and the fire was over in minutes. Hytt, Matt and Jessica were taken to the hospital, and no one knew how the fire had started.

“Where am I?” said Matt, with a different expression from his usual one on his face.
“We’re on the hospital. I can’t believe I woke up before you, even though I was way more injured than you.” replied Hytt, with a smile on his face.
“But—why?”
“Why did I save you? Well, the answer is… I couldn’t leave you to die there, I’d feel responsible for it. Besides, I’ve taken my time to think about everything, and I’ve understood why you did all that. It must’ve been tough holding all of those bad feelings inside.”
“It was… I still can’t believe you saved me.”
“I was thinking… you could’ve told me all of that before, I’d stand by your side. I’d give more attention to you. We could’ve been very happy and this – it would never have happened. “
“It’s funny… All of those bad feelings seem to have gone away. Wait, did you tell them it was me?”
“Them? You mean the police? Nope, I did not. I told them that I don’t know how the fire started.”
“Really? Hytt, I’m really sorry for everything. We could both be dead by now if it weren’t for Jessica. But thinking, if we died, it would be also partially her fault, wouldn’t it?”
“True.”
“Where’s she?”
“Well, Jessica… she…”
“Go ahead, after what happened, nothing will surprise me anymore.”
“Okay…. Well, Jessica is dead. She had bronchitis, but she didn’t know how strong it actually was. She couldn’t have inhaled all of that smoke… I’m sorry, I know she meant a lot to you.”
“Dead?” said Matt, with tears on his eyes “It’s my fault. She was the only person that really loved me, and look at what I did to her… I can never forgive myself.”
“That’s not true. I loved you like a brother, and I still do.”
Years passed, and when Daniel was about eighty-years old, he finally died. Matt didn’t seem to be sad for his death. The cause of the fire was never revealed, so Matt never really had to go to jail. The police found out that Daniel been poisoned. However, they never found out if he killed himself or if he had been killed by someone. He was starting to forget things before his death, and there was no suspect, so they closed the case. When this happened, Matt laughed a lot alone in his room. Had he really changed? Or had he only waited for the perfect opportunity to get his revenge?
Unbearable Pain
