App game sales beat handheld gaming revenues for 1st time

Posted

Gaming heavyweights like Nintendo and Sony have let their dominance in the hand-held video games market slip from their fingers, a new market analysis shows.

The data-intelligence group App Annie reported in its 2013 retrospective that consumers last year spent more on Apple's iOS App Store and Google Play than on dedicated portable gaming systems like Nintendo's 3DS and Sony's PS Vista.

It was the first time revenues from app developers topped those of the traditional game makers. By the third quarter of 2013, the combined sales on Google Play and the iOS App Store were three times the size of the dedicated hand-held video gaming market.

The change signals a shift in the hand-held gaming economy, with downloadable smartphone apps like the mega-popular Candy Crush Saga making as much as $900,000 a day for its developer, London-based King.

App Annie also released its top 10 Google Play and iOS games of 2013, according to worldwide downloads figures. Perhaps not surprisingly, Candy Crush crushed the competition:

  • Candy Crush Saga (King)
  • Subway Surfers (Kiloo)
  • Temple Run 2 (Imangi)
  • Despicable Me (Gameloft)
  • Fruit Ninja (Halfbrick)
  • Angry Birds (Rovio)
  • Hill Climb Racing (Fingersoft)
  • Pou (Zakeh)
  • 4 Pics 1 Word (LOTUM)
  • Real Racing (Electronic Arts)

And? The Vita is deader than the WiiU, 40 million 3DS users cannot sustain the market by themselves, the numbers are actually fine seeing how the only revenue for handheld gaming is coming from around 40 million users, so this is not really a gigantic victory for app game sales, at best it could receive a hooray for beating a mere 40 something milllion users. If the Vita would be doing better, and Candy Crush would begun to stop in its track, or someone would have standed up to King and them trademarking "Candy" and "Saga", earlier, then those results would be way different.

It shows how much it's grown, and that's a good thing.

Don't mistake this for people people ditching handheld. Everyone has phones, and end up getting apps. It is bound to happen. I doubt handheld's will die. Although in the future, companies might decide to ditch handhelds and aim at mobile phones because its cheaper.

That's exactly what makes Smartphone and Tablet gaming so great.

I wouldn't call that growing, 1,2,3 and 8 are mere fads that are bound to die, and 9 is of those games you play once and then forget about it, 4 sold thanks to Despicable Me 2 and how everyone adore the freaking Minions. There's really no growth, aside from fads and hype/fanatism buying. How is it good? Companies will believe their actually is a market in smartphones and Tablets and drive themselves to death, the only big name in that list is EA, and they still presented losses, even when they could get a game in the top 10 app game sold, imagine how bad it must be going for other companies, like Square Enix, which are driving themselves the graveyard, by ignoring their fans and throwing literally everything on smarthphones and tablets.

The thing is no one takes phone or tablet gaming seriously because no one takes apps seriously as games. It's starting to change because of the full, remastered games being released for it, but most of the apps on that list are fads that aren't really games at all. They're time wasters for people when they're sitting around doing nothing.

Angry Birds as an app is $37 cheaper than it is on consoles- with more price differences like that it's bound to become the norm

Is that the next gen version?

Is that the next gen version?

No, that's all the versions ._.

Yeah because most Smartphones and tablets are used for other things and they're not dedicated to gaming

It's growing because this is the kind of games people play while taking a shit or at their office during their break time before going back to work

All the revenues are coming from microtransactions that despite the game being free, later on you realized the game costs more than 60$ all just to shot birds at pigs in Angry bird

Also, how is playing on Smartphones is better than handhelds?

next thing you know someone interrupts my FF6 gameplay with a phone call while I'm fighting Kefka

How is that great in any way, shape or form??

No one said playing a Smartphone or Tablet is better.

It'll pause the game. You won't lose anything.

Yeah, but let's say you got 4 calls in a row and the game pauses...or of the game paused while you;re saving which might cause the save file to corrupt...that will be annoying especially if you're playing a platforming game like Sonic 2 on a smartphone.....someone calls you while you're making a tight jump....the game pauses and Sonic loses his momentum which will cause you to fall into a bottomless bit

Yeah,Smartphone and tablet are soooo great

Let me tell you a secret:The reason smartphones and tablets are selling well because they're not gaming hardwares, they're real life necessities that you'll use more for work and calling people than you do gaming

and people buy app games because they want something to waste time with while taking a shit in the bathroom or taking a break during work, they don't buy app games because they're good.

What makes Angry Bird better than Shin Megami Tensei 4 on the 3DS or Persona 4 Golden on Vita????

the 3DS and Vita are sooooooooooo much better than smartphones because regardless of them being less powerful,at least no one would pause my game every time I get a phone call

Put your Smartphone on silent? And Tablets don't get phone calls if you're so worried about it. And that's exactly what's why they're so great because nearly everyone has one.

No one here is arguing which is better except for you.

Most money spent on apps happens in one of two ways:

1. You have a child spending all sorts of money on your credit card because you linked your account to your card.

2. You dunno what the hell you're doing. You should probably leave the app store alone in this case.
