=) I wrote a song yesterday called "The Library" and then I had this epic idea for a game. Of course, I'm not a game designer, but nonetheless I really liked my idea.

Story

A young teenage girl drops her diary
down a flight of stairs. She runs down the stairs to pick up her notebook, only
to find herself in a large, grand, mystical, and strange library, without an
exit in sight, filled with books, and empty of a soul-save for herself and a
shy talking red panda.  She opens a book,
and finds herself in an entirely different world. She soon comes to find that
the library is magical- any book opened within it transports the reader within
the book, and that the red panda from afore is the guardian of the library.  As she travels through the books, she constantly
finds herself at odds with a man, whom she learns possess a magic that allows him
to travel through the books. He is attempting to find the location of a “Book
of Life,” which grants its reader the power to literally rewrite the story of
the world. She takes it upon herself to thwart his plans, as he not only harasses
the inhabitants of each book they visit; he is attempting to use the book to
launch genocide. With the red panda at her side, she sets out to find the “Book
of Life”. However, after accidently leaving her notebook in a book, the man
uses her diary to transport himself into the library. He promptly begins
destroying the place, burning every book that isn’t the “Book of Life.” She
escapes into the vast maze of the library with the red panda, terrified and
afraid. The man, angry at not finding the book, hunts them down and almost
kills her. The red panda, terrified and fearing for the girl’s life, reveals
its true identity-the red panda is in
fact the Book of Life, disguised as to protect itself. It agrees to leave with
the man if he promises to not harm the girl. He abides, and leaves with panda
in hand. The girl passes out, and then wakes up. When she looks around, she
finds an exit outside. When she leaves however, she finds the world is
completely changed- the man has gone about with his genocide, and given himself
supreme power. Determined to save her friend, the girl sets out to hunt him
down. She finds him, and he uses the “Book of Life” to transform himself into a
demonic beast. The girl manages to defeat him, and runs to save her friend. The
red panda, however, is in terrible shape. With every rewritten word in the “Book
of Life,” her friend has become ever more frail and broken. However, the red
panda, knowing that this act will take its life, asks the girl to rewrite the
world back to how it was. The girl reluctantly agrees, and the world is placed
back into its natural order. Back in the library, where every book that was
once burned is well again, the girl closes the “Book of Life”, and her friend
dies.  She cries over her friend’s body,
and the library, moved by her tears, uses its magic to transform her friend
into a spirit within her.

Gameplay

The girl travels through each “book”, each entirely unique
in setting, story, time period, and characters.

The game is a puzzle-fighting game. The girl travels through
each “story” and rewrites the story back to how it originally was before the
man came by time traveling through the “story”. The girl can travel to certain “time
periods” in each book, and her actions in one time period affects them all. Example:
She clears a path in one time period, in later time periods that path will also
be cleared or she helps a character in one time period, in later time periods
that character will help her. Some stages contain a boss or a “monster” created
by the man that she must defeat.

Art Style:

Not at all realistic, very mystical, magical, and pastel looking- a colored
pencil 2D feel to everything.

Okay, I rewrote the entire story sooo

Characters:

Teenage High School Girl- short and dark skinned with bright eyes.
Intellectual yet bluntly sarcastic, she is a socially awkward book nerd who can
travel through books.

Story:

A young girl is born with the power to travel through any book. She lives in a near
future version of our world- extremely similar to our world today but with
minor technological advances.  She does
not discover her power of traveling through books until she becomes of age to
read. As she grows up, she becomes a quiet book nerd, obsessed with reading and
literally escaping to other worlds. During her time in the books, only certain
amounts of time pass- so if she is inside a book that typically takes an hour
to read, when she leaves said book, only an hour has passed. She is part of a writer’s club at her school,
and she and all her friends enjoy reading and writing. One day, the entire club
disappears and no one remembers their existence- except for her. Left with
nothing but their writings, she delves into their creative, beautiful, entrancing,
and strange stories in order to find the truth about their disappearances.  As she travels through their writings, she finds
their memories within these writings.

-spoiler-

As she gathers the memories, she becomes excessively frustrated- at first they
all seem to be pointing at a grand scheme, but she soon finds that nothing adds
up.  One memory points at murder, while
another suggests abduction. She decides to access the school’s files to find
out more about her “friends”- who she now seems barely know. Unfortunately, as
her only power is traveling through books, she can’t access those files. She attempts
to convince a secretary to let her read the files, but to no avail. She then
notices the secretary’s personal book, and gets an idea. She sneakily snatches
the book, and then proceeds to travel through the journal’s version of the secretary’s
life. She alters time so that the secretary leaves the office due to a
distraction. She escapes the personal book- and in reality, time has altered in
the same way.  Deeply disturbed, she goes
to get the files- only to find nothing.

She begins to wonder if her friends ever existed, and gathers the courage to travel
through one of her own stories, and when she completes it she receives a
memory- of a person accessing her personal diary to alter her story. When she
exits the book, completely bewildered, the said person is standing there- a
tall threatening woman. She reveals that she, like the main character, has the ability
to access books- as do many others across the globe. In fact, she altered the
main character’s entire world, rewriting her story to include a writer’s club
full of friends, and then removing them afterwards.  She did this in the hopes that the main
character would use the opportunity to hone her powers. The woman is part of an
organization that uses their powers to access the records of the world and
rewrite time to prevent disasters from occurring. The woman then asks the girl
to join her in saving the world- and the girl, confused and PISSED OFF refuses
like any normal person. The woman then threatens to rewrite her story so that
she does agree- and jumps into her writings. The girl dives in after her and
after a long and lengthy battle of wits, the girl is defeated. She is almost
rewritten and brainwashed, until a strange boy dives in and saves her. He burns
her writings once they escape her stories, and they run away. The boy reveals
that he also has the power to rewrite and travel through stories, and that he
too is escaping from said organization. He then requests that the girl join him
in overpowering the organization- and the girl gladly agrees.

The girl travels through each “book”, each entirely unique
in setting, story, time period, and characters.

The game is a puzzle-fighting game. The girl experiences each
“story” and rewrites the story by time traveling through the “story”. The girl
can travel to certain “time periods” in each book, and her actions in one time
period affects them all. Example: She clears a path in one time period, in
later time periods that path will also be cleared or she helps a character in
one time period, in later time periods that character will help her.  Also- she cannot die in the stories- at the
time of her death, the game will simply freeze at the moment, and she must
rewind back through the story and attempt it again by altering time. Example:
During a chase sequence, she attempts to run through the forest and away from
her assailant to reach a safe house, but there is not a clear path to the safe
house, so she becomes lost and dies- she can go to the past or sometime before
said event and create a clear path that will aid her in the later chase
sequence- the game isn’t linear at all. She can alter time in as many ways as
she wants to help achieve a goal, but some alterations can have unexpected
effects- back to the chase sequence, she clears the path to escape, making it
easier for her to run to the safe house…but also easier for her chaser to find
her. Some stages contain a boss or a “monster” that she must defeat. By
completing a story, she is granted with a memory from the writer.

Art Style:

A mystical ethereal 3D world within the stories that takes inspiration from
ours- a realistically rendered world that could never be realistic, whilst
reality is the opposite- a harshly realistic world-boring and covered in tones
of gray and tan.

I use MuseScore to compose them, and then I download free soundfonts (think sound samples of instruments) online and plug them into the Midi Player-however, Finale Notepad also does this, and I've heard Finale is much easier to use (I just don't use it because I'm too lazy to learn how to use it xD)Thanks! 0w0

Your welcome, but thank you too! I've been trying to find a way to compose and actually have the sounds for the music for ages. Not like I have a professional orchestra to play anything. I need to work on my crappy composing skills though, but thanks!

Also, good luck with that genocide, currently indistinct antagonist

I like the gameplay idea, as well as the design, very much. But I think the characters need working, and there are some questions I have with the story.

A young teenage girl drops her diary down a flight of stairs. She runs down the stairs to pick up her notebook, only to find herself in a large, grand, mystical, and strange library, without an exit in sight, filled with books, and empty of a soul-save for herself and a shy talking red panda.

A flight of stairs where? Is it a flight of stairs that only allows the girl to go through, or can anyone do it? If anyone can do it, why haven't they? And if only girl can do it, why?

As she travels through the books, she constantly finds herself at odds with a man, whom she learns possess a magic that allows him to travel through the books.

How does he wind up here? Where did he come from? Where does this magic come from?

He is attempting to find the location of a “Book of Life,” which grants its reader the power to literally rewrite the story of the world. She takes it upon herself to thwart his plans, as he not only harasses the inhabitants of each book they visit; he is attempting to use the book to launch genocide.

Why is he looking for this book? What motivates him to rewrite it? Why does he want to commit mass genocide? Also, genocide against what? A specific race of person, or against all mankind? And if something specific, why this specific group?

However, after accidently leaving her notebook in a book, the man uses her diary to transport himself into the library.

I thought he was already there. If he wasn't in the library, how was he getting access to the books prior, or know that the books were even there? How is the girl's notebook the key to opening this place?

Oh whoops. xD Forgot to explain. Basically it was a regular flight of stairs, but the library calls people to it. So people enter the library by going down stairs, but only if the library calls them will they enter the library.

How does he wind up here? Where did he come from? Where does this magic come from?

He isn't actually in the library per se. He uses magic to enter books in general- he was born with the magic? xD Haven't thought that out yet... oh btw the library doesn't have magical books, the library's magic simply allows the reader to enter any book. So, if you brought any book into said library, you could enter it. So for example, if I brought The Hunger Games in said library, when I read it I would enter their world.

Why is he looking for this book? What motivates him to rewrite it? Why does he want to commit mass genocide? Also, genocide against what? A specific race of person, or against all mankind? And if something specific, why this specific group?

He's an extreme radical who wants to kill off a people group. His people have the power to enter books, and so the legend of the book and the library containing said book was passed down to them generation to generation. (He's kinda the last one who has the magic though) His people were scattered and killed by said people group, and because of that his people passed down the legend of the book in hopes that someone would take revenge. As the last one of his people, he's become kind of radicalized and moved to kill them all.

I thought he was already there. If he wasn't in the library, how was he getting access to the books prior, or know that the books were even there? How is the girl's notebook the key to opening this place?

He isn't in the library, he can access any books. The girl's diary IS a book. So, if he enters her diary, which is a record of everything that's happened, he can enter her "world". So he entered her diary, and landed a bit back in time, then he began looking through the library for the "Book of Life".

sooo recap - the library is magical, not the books. The "Book of Life" is hidden somewhere in this library, and this legend was passed down to them. =)

Sounds cool any specific artwork for it? Would you send this idea to Square Enix?

Eh, might make some soon. xD Square Enix? Nah, I don't think they'd care too much about some highschoolers video game design.

Think about Tetsuya, and the conductor of Final Fantasy doing this game.

Tetsuya would certainly be right at home in this muddled incomplete story- he publishes those kinds of stories for a living! xD Hah JKBuuut if they did do this game, it would be epically epic. :)
