Looks like Nintendo won't have an E3 conference

Posted

Nintendo has held annual press conferences at E3 for nearly two decades. But this year, it sounds like the company will be bowing out of the typical proceedings. Speaking with investors during a meeting today, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata indicated that the company will not be hosting “a large-scale presentation where new news is presented to a general audience from all over the world as in previous years.” Below are Iwata’s comments in full, which have been translated by NeoGAF’s StreetsAhead:

In the past, we have announced new titles at Investor’s Meetings and then uploaded videos onto the internet, but with new methods like Nintendo Direct, that we have now, we believe that we are able to provide more appropriate and effective information separately to people from different standpoints and interests [gamer, investor, etc]. First, we have decided not to hold a large-scale presentation where new news is presented to a general audience from all over the world as in previous years. Instead, we are planning several smaller events for software targeted at the American market. One of these will be a closed event for distributors, and another will be a closed event for the Western press. I did not appear in last year’s E3 presentation, and I do not intend to appear in these events either. Apart from these closed events, during E3, we are deliberating how to deliver game information to those at home using new methods, so we will announce further plans later.

Great, now E3 will just be Sony and Microsoft basically whoring as much money and attention as possible while showing us absolutely no new innovation.

I'm not too upset though. It seems that Nintendo is, as usual, trying to risks with new technology and see how it pays off.

Nintendo wouldn't really have much to show.

Right, the company that has been widely considered to have the best E3 conference for about 5 years now absolutely has nothing worth showing. I mean, they just released their next generation console and have dozens of triple A games in production, clearly they have nothing to show at all.

They wouldn't have much to show because they prefer to show stuff at Nintendo Direct.

I'm pretty sure they haven't showed any of Smash Bros., and i think they said they'd show screenshots and stuff at E3 for that.

Yeah but has it ever crossed your mind that Nintendo could bring out demos, as well as new trailer for the games they announce in their Nintendo Directs?

Nintendo will still be at E3.  But they  just won't have any major conference like they have in the past E3 events.

I like it, now i really dont have that much reason to watch E3 this year. im still going to though.

Well, we're arent hearing any thing for the next Smash Bros at E3 unfortunately. Darn you Nintendo. xD

I'm kind of glad, honestly; I don't think my heart can take another Nintendo floodgate of promising titles.

To be perfectly honest, I'm perfectly ok with this. We'll still get plenty of Nintendo information due to Nintendo Direct, and this way we won't have to put my life on hold for about two hours just so that we can watch the presentation live. Over all, I think my body is ready for this change.

Do people think they won't be at E3? They'll be at E3. They aren't having a live conference, it's apparenlty being replaced by a Nintendo Direct and several other media briefings. It think this is being blown quite a bit out of proportion. They already said they will have Mario Kart, 3D Mario, and Smash Bros, and I'm quite sure they still will. The change is that they are customizing their presence so that investors get one presentation, gamers get another, and a few more thrown in for press.

I don't think there's anything to indicate Nintendo is putting any less effort into E3 here than before. I'm actually more excited for it this year than last year, as now we have more interesting titles confirmed for E3's streamed presentation than we has presented at last years conference.

I don't see what the big deal is. We don't have to wait a year long for what Nintendo has to offer. And so far a lot of big titles have been announced through Nintendo Direct and Nintendo Direct comes every month or two. If anything, this transaction may be a way of saying that they have a lot in stored for what's to come and it would take more than an e3 panel to display to the consumers. This just may be a step forward on Nintendo's part. Hey but that's just a theory, a game theory.

Nintendo wouldn't really have much to show.

you are just like Michael Patcher, always attacking Nintendo..

I've owned a Gameboy Colour, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo GameCube.

I find it very ironic that people claim Nintendo push all the industry's innovation whereas Microsoft and Sony do shit all. I'm a Playstation lad, the only Nintendo devices I've owned are a Wii and a 3DS, so I haven't exactly had a lot to do with Nintendo, and I've spent even less time with Xbox. Now, I'm not saying Nintendo don't innovate, they definitely do (the Wii was great (mostly)). But you have to give Sony and Microsoft some credit. I mean look how much Microsoft is pushing the Kinect, for example. The Kinect, although not very popular among teens on the internet, is a very innovative device. And yes I know it's based off the Eye-toy blah blah. What I'm saying is, the kinect is a very advanced system which is quite incredible when you think about it. Nintendo was like, hey we have motion control with controllers, and Microsoft replied by saying, fark the controllers we don't need them. Sure, the games that are released for Kinect aren't exactly amazing, but nobody can deny that it isn't a good piece of tech. Nintendo has introduced the WiiU, which is their next attempt at innovation and at the moment it isn't performing very well, unfortunately, which is sad for the company I guess.

Anyway, I'm not hating on Nintendo, I like what they do, but it's unfair to say nobody else innovates or tries new things.

When did I attack Nintendo? Lol. I simply stated Nintendo wouldn't have much to show at a press conference because they prefer to show their titles at Nintendo Directs.

Nintendo wouldn't really have much to show.

Super Smash Bros 4

Zelda Wii U

Bayonetta 2

Xenoblade 2 (Monolith soft new RPG)

Yoshi's Epic Yarn

Mario Kart Wii U

a New 3D Mario game

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

Zelda Wind Waker HD

The Wonderful 101

....................etc

Yeah they have nothing to show(sarcasm)

Just because they had a brief show of their title at the Directs doesn't mean they have nothing to show

When did I attack Nintendo? Lol. I simply stated Nintendo wouldn't have much to show at a press conference because they prefer to show their titles at Nintendo Directs.

Remember that thread of "Nintendo make your own ideas" where you literaly accused Nintendo of stealing ideas from other companies and then stated that the reason for doing this is because only the game cube suits you.And that Wii and Wii U is just rip-offs

Yeah,clearly you're not attacking.

Anyway,if you guys looked at the article,Nintendo will attend E3 but pretty much in panel form where they show their games with couple of trailers,

They didn't say they'll omit E3 completely but their presence at E3 won't be a big one

Fair enough.

They didn't say they'll omit E3 completely but their presence at E3 won't be a big one

I wouldn't even say that. They're going to have more presentations than in previous years, the press release seems to indicate, they are just not stage conferences. We'll know more about what they're actually bringing as we get closer to E3

I've owned a Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo GameCube.

Fixed.

Update: Nintendo has confirmed that they will still be at E3.

Last night, Nintendo announced that, unlike previous years, it will not be hosting a traditional press conference at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). However,Nintendo will still be a part of the upcoming expo, in which it plans to hold smaller events and showcase its new video games. To avoid confusion, via its official Twitteraccount, E3 confirmed that Nintendo will indeed be at E3 2013.

Hey, everyone! To avoid confusion, yes, Nintendo is still at E3 and we’re looking forward to their news and games. #E32013

Fixed.

Wrong. Colour is spelt with a "u" outside of the U.S.

See. He goes on to say a main reason is Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo: You might want to look at your Gameboy Mr.96.
