First of all, it's being enforced very selectively, and only just recently. But beyond that, it has severe ramifications for the culture of KH13.

The MOST popular threads in random are about specific members. It was very special to me when my Marriage of Daniel Chiuchiarelli and Aaron McNabb became popular. It was my first real KH13 success, or indeed, online success of any sort. Under this new rule, that topic wouldn't exist. MOST of the topics in random wouldn't exist. i|t's full of in jokes. I understand that might be frustrating, but the inside jokes are vital for member retention. Sooner or later, people aren't going to stick around here just for KH news (Especially during a dry spell like now) but if they have a deep community driven culture to return to, it's hard to drop. I can say with 100% faith that I will leave KH13 if we lose the ability to express this freedom. The driving force behind keeping members for a logn term is that there ARE inside jokes that you can strive to understand, and eventually these members will make their own.But there's more than that. I'm willing to bet that if I made a thread tomorrow called "Cella's Pants" it wouldn't get deleted, instead, most of the mods and older members would probably Like it, instead. Now you may argue "But that's a part of KH13 history, it's more of a widely known meme , it's not just about one member" But HOW os anybody else supposed to obtain that if everything like that will be deleted on sight?

In a similar breath, I'm willing to bet that if I made another Conspiracy Theory video, it wouldn't be deleted. KI won't though, it's unfair that this rule is being treated selectively. But besides that, if this rule is 100% enforced, what am I supposed to do? Start posting "Cheesecake Banna so randum!" or reposting 9gag pictures?

 

I'm pretty sure I'm reaching the Too Long, Didn't Read range, so here's the basic idea:

 

This new rule is essentially undercutting the creative culture of KH13. It's trying to remove inside jokes from a forum, and that is not a good thing. KH13 would not be the same place without Ariel, or Koko=Satan, or the resident "trolls", or bayTrey, or even the Zexy Party Time. It's not the same without piss parties, or Aqua's boobs, or so many other things

For those of you exasperated I locked those threads, I was just doing my job. I noticed it and since no other mod had taken care of it, I knew I had to do it. It doesn't necessarily mean I like doing or agree with it. Just so you know.

 

Look, I'm not mad at you for doing your job.  I understand that you have to enforce the rules.  What really ticks me off is that when someone decides to suddenly enforce a rule, I'm always either the one they call out, or am involved in it somehow.  I can tell you a bunch of stories that go pretty much like this one.  I'm sick of it.  This has nothing to do with you.  It's the fact that I'm always the one that gets the unfair side of the rule.

That's the learning process at work, You start to talk with people, after a while you talk with their friends and so on. I stayed on this psychotic-harem of a site, because I made friends here that I like to talk with. I didn't immediately get the jokes myself (lets be honest, most of them are either easy to pick up, or not even relevant). The sites community isn't really noticeable from the outside anyway, and those threads seem to only a appear between KH games, hmmm I wonder why. 

Okay guys, relax, you know I'm always up for having an open discussion about these things. No need to rally support.

Perhaps I should amend the rule to better explain this? You guys have to understand though, you make up like 1% of the visitors to KH13. I have to make it a great place for the other 99% of members too, instead of it feeling like a place where everyone knows each other already and has their own well-established culture (which makes it difficult to get new members to feel like they can get involved). If people don't understand what these topics are getting at, it's not a great place for them. If the topics are mostly self-explanatory and the inside joke isn't the whole point, then that's okay.

 

KH13 has always been great because of how easy it is for new members to jump in. We are definitely seen as the friendliest, easiest to join website, and having the Random forum contain lots of topics that are dominated by a few members goes against this. (We don't want to be like KHI.)

These inside jokes do not exclude newer members or those simply not familiar with our culture. The first and most prominent reason is the existence of this thread.

We've all seen it before, it's a list of all of the inside jokes and it's still growing. With a little polishing it can become a full guide of all of our inside jokes and other culture.

 

I'm proposing we create a sort of "Know Your Meme: KH13 Edition" thread off of that one. In it includes the origins of all of our inside jokes, their usage, and other relevant information. The only problem with the thread I linked is that you need to understand the inside jokes, in order to understand the list about the inside jokes. It's better than nothing and is helpful in most cases but it needs more. A full guide on our ludicracy would be the best thing to make this website more newbie friendly and maintain our culture. 

 

Also, new members that stick around often learn what the hell we are talking about in time. I didn't understand some of the really old inside jokes when I first joined, but I did in time. 

 

And I'd have to say I am with hatok on this one. This website's unique culture is what keeps it interesting. There is a reason why I rarely post in serious KH related threads. There is only so much you can talk about one game , especially a game with no (real) multiplayer and scripted events with more minor releases being 2 to 3 years apart and the major releases being 4 to 5 years apart. This rule and how it's enforced (either really strictly or completely ignored) can seriously damage our culture in the long run. With this site's culture and inside jokes that go with it, I'd probably leave out of boredom in time. 

 

I understand your intentions my Eternal Lord, but this is not the way to do it. Instead of restricting the use of inside jokes for the sake of newer members, make it so that newer members can easily understand them. Like the creation of an official guide to our antics. I can even undertake the project myself if I have to. Or we could simply get rid of this rule. Like dropping into a foriegn country, you eventually learn it's customs, history, and culture. The same thing happens on this website and others like it. All of us probably had no grasp of the inside jokes when we first joined but we did eventually, I'm sure nobody felt seriously left out because of them either. Heck, some people even wound up creating or becoming part of inside jokes involving them. 

 

These inside jokes and how they are used often change in time. There are jokes that us older members seem to only be able to fully grasp but I've seen inside jokes and culture created by newer members that I am absolutely confused by. The only problem I see with this in the long term are the creation of little cliques on this website but since it hasn't escalated to that point yet or even shown signs of it, I think there is nothing to worry about regarding that. 

 

I would also like to propose that this thread be moved to the website forum as it is a more serious thread and about site policy at that. It's not my call though, hatok is the creator of this thread and thus he should be making the request if he feels it is necessary. 

 

And to the moderators enforcing these rules, I personally do not condemn your actions. The only problem I have with moderation regarding this rule is how loosely it is enforced. Some people get hit with it (like hatok) and others generally get by it (like me). It would be much easier to debate this if there was a clear way this rule is being upheld.

Close community?  Definitely.  But I had to lurk for quite some time before I had the balls to join a forum like this.  Even after I made an account, it went unused for a further period of time until I took the plunge and made an introductory thread.  And after that, I barely participated in anything until I felt safe enough to truly join in.  Newbie-friendly, this site is not.  It's the price to pay for a close-nit community, an almost total alienation of people who haven't made a name for themselves like you and who have no idea about the in-jokes.  baylaust's in-joke thread barely helped me at all starting out.  I familiarized myself with the people here from the posts they made in the forum at large, not just Random.  The in-joke guide was just some long list of weird quirks of a bunch of total strangers.  Do you think I remembered everything it said?  It functioned more as a memory-refresher than something that helps a newbie.

I'm sorry but you can't blame a close-nit society for this. I did the exact same thing. I watched the forum for a few days looking at the topics created and what they were about before joining. I saw the lovely community in action and loved it. I joined and made an intro topic right off the bat. Granted, I soon changed my entire personality and name, showing my true colors, however you don't need to be ballsy to jump in. I was a regular for a while, before dropping off the map, and recently returning. I know I was getting to know the members and their jokes. I'm not insulting you because your shy, I'm just saying you can't blame the community.

And on another note, it sure sucks to have an inside joke thread about you and it gets locked before you even get a chance to reply to it  

I may have been here for two years, but at one point I too was a new member who came onto a site that was filled with running jokes, some of which I still don't get. I don't really see the big deal, though. There are new members and old members. We can't help it we've been here longer and happen to have established a relationship with the other members. But, either way, I put myself out there and made the other members aware of me, despite their previous relationships and running jokes. The current new members and future new members should be able to do the same. The site isn't going anywhere anytime soon. They have all the time in the world to get acquainted with us and our community. 

WAIT, wait wait wait. KH13 is difficult to understand unless you've already stuck with it for a while? It's not like it's a fansite for a game series that does the exact same thing or anything like that.

The site has a random forum for a reason, complete randomness. So why is there a rule against randomness? I don't quite like it at all.

You guys, just because some members can understand that inside joke and wants to join in, doesn't mean others will comfortably join in as well. Not every new member will look through the 'Running Jokes' thread and straight away got into inside jokes, they're not. Some will feel uncomfortable and will think you guys are the "popular" member group which will made them feel left out. I understand that you guys also want to bring the community closer, but did you ever think that some members feared of being not having the courage to post after they post something and got ignored after that? I've seen some threads being created here and there, and got ignored in the end. So they thought that they are not "popular" enough and gave up on postingand decided to post in KH-related threads instead.

 

I understand why DChiuch created this rule. To summarize easily for you guys, is that DChiuch doesn't want to see new members to feel out and wants them to be a part of the community comfortably, hence why this rule is created

 

 

Please no more topics that refer to a single member, or a couple of members, or are based on a joke/meme that only a small handful of people will understand. These kind of topics might be very funny to you, but for the remaining 95% of people on the forum, they are meaningless and clog up the Random forum, making it boring. Keep that kind of thing in Personal Messages.

 

 

What you guys are doing right now will definitely alienated future new members. Some will come right in as they please and understand it but don't expect most of them to join in fun as they will feel and think that it is "Your" forum and not a KH13 forum as a whole. Not every new member here are very open about themselves and are able to ask you guys what does that *inside joke* meant.

 

You can do "whatever the hell you want" in the random sub-forum, but always try to think about others and limit yourself in some way possible to let others join in the fun and not feel discouraged by it.

 

I hope that starting from today onwards, all of you will welcome new members with open arms and to reply in at least their threads in the 'Random' sub-forum instead of ignoring it. Same goes to other sub-forums as well. Please make them feel at home.

 

DChiuch is not only thinking about you guys, but he is also thinking about newer members as well and wants everyone to have fun and not seeing certain members having fun from far.

 

Not only DChiuch, but the rest of the staff as well. They join being a staff of the forums, is to keep the peace in the forums, be civilized about it, and wants everyone else to feel comfortable experience browsing around the forums. You don't simply hate a mod just because of a thread being closed. If you need anything to complain, go PM them or at least complain it to DChiuch himself instead of blaming it out in the open which make everyone else uncomfortable. There is always a reason for everything.

 

Don't always think about yourself, but think about others around you as well. We are a community. We are one. Not KH13 A and KH13 B

The reason why someone would make it a thread and not a status? Because it's something they want to share with the community, the reason why threads exist. They are something that people want to share, to get out there.

 

But while the phrasing and enforcement was a bit of an issue, that's not what has me going "no." It's the rule itself. This isn't going to lead to the Random forum becoming more accessible, it's just going to lead to the Random forum becoming less active, it will prevent members from making jokes at other members to pass the time during dry spells, and inevitably, members will leave because they feel restricted.

But the fact that the Random forum has so many of these threads, is also the reason why this rule isn't the ideal solution. So many people take part in doing those, and so many people enjoy doing them, and by saying, "No, you can't anymore," this will be upsetting a lot of people. And while rephrasing the rule will help, the fact is, restricting what people can say in Random in any way goes against the point of the Random forum.

 

Of course I want the newer members to be a part of the community, and sure, action can be taken to give them a comfortable experience. But this solution doesn't make KH13 a comfortable, accessible site for everyone. Just the new members, while people who want to do threads like this (which is undoubtably the older community) just have to accept this. And that's not the best solution.

I think Amon already touched on this, but I think that the inclusion of another forum topic may be an easy solution?  As a somewhat in-active member myself, I do feel a little left out.  The crazy antics on this site sometimes feel more frequent than the genuine topics or news, which makes it feel awkward for me at least. So I can definitely see where Daniel is going with this.  But, like I said before, maybe just a new topic for inside jokes or something that would be an easy fix.  

Why not make a KH13 VIP section/group for older members and let them have a VIP privileges and in that section let them have a subforum/category to create threads about other members and singling them out so it will be a complete separate area from the forums, almost like a hidden forum until they reach a certain post amount. One thing I worry about with this is complaints of exclusion. But maybe if DC just makes it so that anybody with more than 100 likes can get in?

Why not make a KH13 VIP section/group for older members and let them have a VIP privileges and in that section let them have a subforum/category to create threads about other members and singling them out so it will be a complete separate area from the forums, almost like a hidden forum until they reach a certain post amount. This always worked nicely on other forums I've been to. Just a thought.It will also make members strive to become VIP members.

This could work, but there would have to be clear distinction as to what qualifies as being a "VIP" and we shouldn't call it a VIP section as that implies some members are more important than others.

I'm going to put an end to this charade. This situation is getting to be the most silliest/childish thing I've ever encountered in this forum and doesn't deserve to be that kind of a big deal.

Who said members were prevented from making jokes? The past had been quite alright and nothing major happened. Random is still the same to me in general. You can still post anything you like.

Obviously nobody wants newer members to be left out but the fact that when you see these *jokes* towards a certain member in the random forum all the time, will not interest new members at all, which will pull themselves away from the random section and hangout in other sections instead. It's not the rule that's restricting you guys, It's you yourself thinking that the rule is restricting you. It's never a big deal to begin with actually and neither should you.

That is where we as members of the site must make the newer members feel at home and not ignoring them all the time. There was never a restricting thing to begin with and all of you make it sounds like the biggest deal of the century. Just post like normal. Unfortunately based on this situation alone, you guys nearly break the community in half and want everything for yourself instead of having fun with everyone else.

It's not the most ideal solution because that would really make the community to split into 2, which I've said previously. KH13 A & KH13 B and not as a whole community anymore.

You see you guys, these unnecessary situation is as close as we can get to a split community and obviously we don't want that. This alone makes me feel like this is going to be the biggest troll waiting to happen.

 

To summarize this whole situation, you guys just doesn't want your inner circle to be crumble and want things your way. You see one of your thread getting locked and you start a tantrum for no bloody reason which cause the entire site to be uncomfortable with everything. You can always think of another way to start a fun thread and we can post fun stuff as well, but just based on those situation like "They get an ice-cream, and I don't" is quite the stupidest thing I might add. You don't climb another person's head and want to take control things your way. You know you have other members backing you up and you're taking advantage of the situation.

 

Ask yourself this, is it you yourself who feel uncomfortable about it or the members around you? Where we are right now is really making all of us uncomfortable just because of this silly thing and you know that.

 

This is just one big ego trip. The rule got nothing to do with it in the first place.

 

The more I read through this thread, the more I feel stupid thinking this was such a big deal in the first place. Please don't make a fool of yourselves.

I don't know if I am to late on this but I figured I'd share why I am still on this site.

 

I joined KH13 just to talk about Kingdom Hearts. But then I got into the community and started to love this site. I've never been one to join forums and talk with people. I always thought it was stupid and pointless. One of the reasons I have stuck around is because of all the fun we have poking fun at each other.
