On October 18, 2011, one of the best Batman stories comes to life and no it’s not Batman:Arkham City. It’s Batman:Year one which was written by Frank Miller and it was one of the best Batman stories ever created. It’s easily in my Top 5 favorite Batman graphic novels and every good Batman film that sets up Batman has took something from this story. So does film adaptation hold up to graphic novel and does it do graphic novel justice to both of the question the answer would be yes.
The story of the film is more about James Gordon(Bryan Cranston) than Bruce Wayne (Benjamin McKenzie) where Gordon moves to Gotham with the rest of his family after a transfer from Chicago with his pregnant wife Barbara
(Grey DeLisle). In Gotham he tries to make it better place for his family to live and stop the corruption from the police force and Gotham as a whole.Bruce Wayne on the other hand returns to Gotham from training abroad for the past 12 years. He also tries to fix Gotham in his own way along way it leads him to become Batman he also meets Selina Kyle ( Eliza Dushku )who is prostitute but later becomes Catwoman. The story of film is the best told Batman origin story out there every single character is flawed in some way like Gordon who as a brief affair with Detective Essen(Katee Sackhoff). The movie is well-paced and does good job showing how bad Gotham is.The ending of the film like comic does good job of showing future of Gotham and shows how Batman and James Gordon become friends. It shows Bruce Wayne almost wants to die because he feels like dissappointment to his parents but gets inspired to become Batman. It does great job of showing how he is beginner and making mistakes but later becomes the mastermind we know him as now.The story is well rounded and is very action packed with a very mature story that stays true to the comic.
The animation in this film is very well done but at times the physics seems a little weird but other than that i have no reals complaints against the animation. The animation does great job of adding to the story with a good job setting up the atmosphere but some might not like the look of film and rather have it the way it looked back in the 90's with Batman:the animated series but the look did not bother me. The voice acting is one of best in a DCU animated film.Bryan Cranston does great job as Jim Gordon with very believable performance and one of the best if not the best sounding Jim Gordon that as ever been and he does great job reading thought lines where you know what he going though just by sound of his voice and it really does add to the film. Benjamin McKenzie does overall good job as Bruce Wayne but as times i do not believe he is Batman and he felt flat at times where he is not even trying. All the others range from good to great jobs in there roles and they never take you out of the movie and most of good fits for there roles.
The film is only 64 minutes long but it’s the best adaptation of any comic book i have ever seen maybe too good. The voice acting and animation are brilliant and add to the story. The story is better than what i told you about it and it does great service to James Gordon which shows how great his character is.It does not Nolan up it’s film and keeps all mature elements in there. It would be great stepping stone to for other Batman comics like the long Halloween to be turned into a film. It’s hard to call yourself Batman fan if you have not watched or read Batman:Year one.

DC Showcase: Catwoman
When you buy Batman:Year one you also get a Catwoman short along with other goodies but i will be focusing on Catwoman short.I am not a very big Catwoman but i do enjoy her when she is in a story as a supporting character like Batman:Hush but when she is on her own i usually don’t care that much about what going on and burnout on the story and don’t finish the comic. This 15 minutes short about Catwoman is very simple story where she finds a collar she saw on cat and wants to know where it came from which leads her into strip club where fans get little fan service but it’s done decently and much better than Catwoman # 1.Then it leads her to an exciting climax. The short as tons of action and voice acting is solid which same can be said about the animation as well. The ending is sweet and is nice way to end the short. To conclude the story might be a little simple but what do you expert from 15 minute short it shows off who Catwoman’s character is well and as tons of action to go along with it.It’s alot fun and if you’re fan of catwoman you should watch it.
