Film Pokemon the Movie 2017 - Pokemon I Choose You!

Recommended Posts

Being a newer fan of the series, this is actually right up my alley. (Although the S/M anime isn't that bad, dangit.)

I've tried watching the first Pokemon anime consecutively for the first time since I was a kid (as in episode by episode, not just catching random episodes on Kids WB!, Cartoon Network, or on VHS xD) and... well, first off, the original Japanese episodes are hard as shit to find. You'd think even for a show like this, fansubbers would be all over getting the original show subtitled. Maybe it'd help if the American handlers for the DVDs weren't stuck in the early 2000s mentality of dub only releases too...

But other than that, I also stopped watching the Pokemon anime because, well... a lot of people tell me how good the original series was, and thinking back on what I saw as a kid, I can understand why, and not just for reasons of nostalgia. But here's the thing (and this is just how felt): it's dumb. Like, really really dumb. Ash/Satoshi is dumb, his friends are dumb, the battles are dumb, the story is dumb, and everything else is dumb. And this is coming from someone who didn't even watch the 4Kids dub. It's still dumb even in its native language. Yeah, there's some fun moments here and there, but I couldn't see myself enjoying at least a hundred more episodes of it considering like even newer Pokemon titles, nothing ever really changes.

So what I'm trying to say is, for me at least, this seems like a good opportunity to write the wrongs a little. It seems like a throwback movie to the first gen which means the anime staff has a chance of telling a more compact but still better told story than they did with the first anime. I mean, they have better examples to follow anyway such as Origins or Generations, why not pull from that? And at the very least, don't make 99% of Ash's/Satoshi's battles flukes. You can get away with that in a TV series, but seeing that in a movie? Unacceptable.

As much as I love Indigo League (And Johto/Hoenn), even I have to admit that it has a ton of filler, so seeing Ash's journey stick more to the games is a really cool idea. Something new after the same formula for years and years now would also be nice. A more serious movie is still something I'm really interested in seeing. I think this is a great chance to appeal to older fans such as myself who loved the original anime and newer fans who might not be able to get into it so much by doing something new with the plot. That all being said I like all the dumb jokes in early Pokemon ;_;

(Also, regardless of what you say about the S/M anime, nothing will help me get over this)

Also, while slightly off-topic, the lack of availability of Japanese episodes is why I never got far in rewatching the anime since I wanted to find the episodes that were unaired/heavily altered in English... Couldn't find Beauty and the Beach in Japanese though.

I think I've watched all of them, plus Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel (via Disney X D).

This new movie must be a flashback of his past journeys. Or just only regarding Kanto. It's just a guess.

I don't know if I told you before, there's definetly still jokes like that in the original dub. xD Though, it's mostly play-on-words and references to Japanese culture. Of course for me, it's easier to digest because A) They're actually funny, and not in a "it's stupid but we pretend it's funny anyway" way and B) There not loaded into the script for every other line of dialogue.

Alright, I'll give you that at least. It seems whoever organized this screenshot to be used didn't see all the backlash that DBS Episode 5 got for freeze-framing either.

I don't even think the limited source I was using had Beauty and the Beach. Not that I can check considering its server got closed down and the site is looking for a newer one. Still, the newer episodes (that still skipped a chunk of episodes before it) only went up to, like, the Christmas episodes or something.

Also, something I just thought of: Since this most likely a Kanto reboot movie, how condensed can you possibly make an 181 anime series into a movie? Are we going to skip through all the bits about doing side quests and just have the standard Ash gets Pikachu, Misty, Brock, and all his other Pokemon and then just the main gym battles and whatever else that's in the same vein? Again, that'd be a more streamlined version of the plot similar to the actual games, and honestly, I wouldn't mind it.

I only have one question. When this movie eventually gets an English release, who wants to bet if the English theme song of the original anime is used?

Considering that the teaser used the Japanese original opening song at the end, I wouldn't be surprised if the English version gets the same deal.

The theme song is a lie.

Ash isn't the very best that no one ever was. He doesn't even win all this badges the right way.

Yet he still WANTS to be the very best that no one ever was. Unfortunately he doesn't know that Red already did it along with getting his own mountain.

Yeah well if you don't actually become the very best like no one ever was, that's called FALSE ADVERTISING.

But, in all seriousness, now that we have this movie, Ash/Satoshi can hopefully be written a little more tolerable.
