  16. Shinji Hashimoto discusses Kingdom Hearts at Lucca Comics & Games; Improvements in graphics in Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX for PS4; No "2.9" after Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue; and more

Kingdom Hearts series producer and Final Fantasy series brand manager Shinji Hashimoto was in attendance at a conference at Lucca Comics & Games 2016 in Italy last month. During this conference, Hashimoto was able to discuss and answer questions relating to the upcoming Kingdom Hearts releases.

The translations below have been provided by Aquaberry.

Hashimoto noted that the cinematic movie Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, present in the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue collection, will fill up a missing space in the Kingdom Hearts timeline and that it will be comprehensible even to those who have not played Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ for smartphone.

He commented on Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage-, saying that its story will connect directly to the story that will be presented in Kingdom Hearts III. He also said that the duration of the game will partly depend upon the player's abilities. While it may seem a short game, it has a substantial amount of playable content.

He also noted that there will be no "Kingdom Hearts 2.9" after Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue as "it will proceed directly to [Kingdom Hearts] 3."

Hashimoto discussed Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, saying that the idea for the compilation was due to fans all around the world commenting on the complexity of the plot of the Kingdom Hearts series. The PlayStation 4 release will address this issue by enabling the fans to own the entire collection on the same console. Furthermore, he indicated that the PS4 re-release will contain some differences from the PS3 releases; it will have much better graphics.

Hashimoto was also asked to comment on the legitimacy of the story surrounding the conception of Kingdom Hearts in an accidental meeting in an elevator with a Disney employee who worked in the same building. Hashimoto answered that this is a matter he has been asked about many times. He clarified that while Square were working in the same building as Disney, it was the latter that approached with a proposal for a collaboration that later became the Kingdom Hearts series.

As reported previously, Hashimoto confirmed that Kingdom Hearts HD Dream Drop Distance will be fully translated in Italian and Spanish; this is a novel development as Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance for Nintendo 3DS was not fully localised in these languages. The game, originally intended for two screens, will certainly be playable in one screen on the PS4.

Hashimoto also reminded fans that the Sora DLC for World of Final Fantasy will be available for only a limited time only this winter.

Lastly, Hashimoto reflected on his contentment towards the evolution of the Kingdom Hearts series, saying that he is happy about the success of the series reflected by fans across the world.

A full video of the conference can be viewed below, thanks to GamerClick.it.

  18. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 & 2.5 ReMIX + HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue cover artwork have a hidden message toward Kingdom Hearts III

During an interview with Dengeki PlayStation, Tetsuya Nomura, director of the Kingdom Hearts series has revealed that the cover artwork for Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, 2.5 ReMIX, & HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue all connect together as a hidden message for Kingdom Hearts III.

    4663KH15_Keyart

    cover

    KH2.8 2D PS4

Tetsuya Nomura says that the 3 pieces of artwork start with Sora sitting, then standing, and finally walking. There is also a flow of time with the 3 pieces of artwork, where 1.5 is sunset becoming night, 2.5 is in the middle of the night, & 2.8 is night breaking into dawn. All of this connects to a hidden message for Kingdom Hearts III.

You can read Nomura's answer below, thanks to Catherine Mueller (nichiei.translations@gmail.com) for the translations.

--You also revealed a gorgeous package art.

Nomura: There are actually two secrets about the illustrations from [KH1.5] until [KH2.8]. Extremely attentive KH fans might have already discovered them, but one is that Sora's movements change from sitting, to standing, to walking. One more is that when you line up the three illustrations, you'll notice that they show the flow of time with changes in the sky. [KH1.5] is sunset becoming night, [KH2.5] is the middle of the night, and [KH2.8] is night breaking into dawn. Those three illustrations have a message regarding the final chapter, [KHIII].

--So you planned all this from the time of [KH1.5]'s release, then?

Nomura: We worried a long time about the package art for [KH2.5], and we worked on trying to connect the three productions in a continual manner. It seems like there were a lot of people who figured out Sora's movements, but there were not very many people who noticed the connection between the skies. There are two meanings to “sora” (I.E. one being the protagonist's name, and the other meaning “sky”).

While it is uncertain what this message is, this is something for fans to think about as we wait for the release of Kingdom Hearts III.

What do you think this hidden message could be? Let us know in the comments below!

  19. Tai Yasue says Kingdom Hearts HD collections on PS4 not ruled out completely

In a recent interview with Gamespot at E3, Tai Yasue, co-director of the Kingdom Hearts series, says that Kingdom Hearts HD collections (1.5 & 2.5) have not been ruled out completely for the PS4. You can read what he said below.

We haven't come to decision and nothing is announced yet. We listen to our fans and our players and see what they think about it--and, yeah, I'm not ruling it out, but we're not making an announcement just yet.

In addition to stating that about the possibility of HD collections on the PS4, he also says that Kingdom Hearts III is going smooth right now.

Are you excited to hear the possibility of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX coming to the PS4? Let us know in the comments below!

  20. Nomura: No plans to release Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX or HD 2.5 ReMIX on PlayStation 4

Back in December, Tai Yasue, the co-director of the Kingdom Hearts series revealed that both Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX & HD 2.5 ReMIX could make their way to PlayStation 4. However, in an interview with Ruliweb, Tetsuya Nomura, the director of the Kingdom Hearts series has stated there are no plans to do so.

Ruliweb: It's been two years since the first official announcement of Kingdom Hearts 3.

Nomura: Usually, most of the reactions from the KH fans and media consist of "Please put [this world] in the game!" (Laughs) Rather than comments on the game system itself, we get requests for "Put this world in, put my world in!" much more. Whichever world is a popular map should determine whether or not the masses will greatly enjoy Kingdom Hearts 3. Recently, we also received a significant increase in requests for the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix to be released on the PS4. Unfortunately, we don't have any plans for that.

The most likely reason for this appears to be that they do not want to delay Kingdom Hearts III, as both HD 1.5 ReMIX & HD 2.5 ReMIX were both developed by the Kingdom Hearts team for unknown reasons. Tai Yasue stated in the interview linked above that they did not want Kingdom Hearts III delayed. Another likely reason is that the PlayStation 4 requires all games to have digital versions while both HD 1.5 ReMIX & HD 2.5 ReMIX did not on PlayStation 3, likely due to licensing issues.

Thanks go to @RedMakuzawa for the tip, Jess from Tumblr and Amber from Tumblr for the translation.

  21. Yasue says 1.5 & 2.5 were 'good training' for Kingdom Hearts III & sharing ideas with FFXV team

In an interview with Kotaku at last month's European launch event for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, Tai Yasue the co-director of the Kingdom Hearts series spoke about Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX & HD 2.5 ReMIX being good training for new staff members in preparation for Kingdom Hearts III. He also discusses respecting source material and sharing ideas with the Final Fantasy XV team for the new hardware. You can read the interview below.

"We have been working on 3 and 2.5 at the same time," he explains, "so a lot of people are crossing over and doing both. There are also a lot of new people working on both. In a way, we've learned what was good about our previous Kingdom Hearts [games] by making 2.5."

"For 3, we want to evolve it in a new direction, but at the same time we don't want to change what is fundamental about Kingdom Hearts. We're hiring new people continuously, so they are learning about Kingdom Hearts through making 2.5. It's a good learning experience."

Kingdom Hearts is a unique thing to be working on, says Yasue, due to the necessity of finding a balance between respecting the Disney properties and incorporating original, creative ideas - so the training has been necessary.

"There's a lot to get used to working with the Disney content," he says. "You have to have a lot of dedication and respect for their visual IPs for example, and when you play Kingdom Hearts 2 you see that: when you summon a character or use a spell there's a lot of love and care that goes into the presentation. When you see Stitch coming out of the screen, for example, it's very true to the original movie. That dedication is something you learn through the process or remaking 2."

It must surely be restrictive working within those constraints, but Yasue enjoys the challenge that they introduce. "As Square-Enix, if someone else was making a Final Fantasy or a Dragon Quest, we'd be very protective of that too," he ventures. "So we really understand the importance of not changing the brand and respecting the fans. We want to make it true to Disney - we don't want to change it fundamentally. We always strive to make original content, but with Kingdom Hearts you have to really respect the source material, and that's something people really like about the series."

"As someone who creates games I think the constraints make you really think. They are what make you strive to come up with new ideas - ideas that are acceptable to Disney, and also fun. That balancing act leads to a lot of surprises. It's very challenging, but we work on it daily. We continuously talk with Disney and see what they think is acceptable… but we constantly want to surprise our players, too, so we need flexibility. It is challenging and makes you think."

The Kingdom Hearts team also benefits from sharing expertise with the other Square-Enix development units, including the Final Fantasy XV team, Yasue says - even though Kingdom Hearts development is based in Osaka. "We trade ideas - especially for PS4, Xbox One, new gen stuff," says Yasue. "We're trying to move in leaps obviously, so there is a lot to learn and a lot to explain to other people. That exchange of ideas and technology is very important and we're doing that inside Square Enix, with other teams."

Hello! Yoko Shimomura here. Thank you for purchasing this CD!

It’s been 13 years since I was given the task of writing songs for Kingdom Hearts. I think it was in 2001. I’ve already mentioned this many times, but the first music I wrote for the series was the one used for the PV, “Destati”. At the time, I thought if it was okay to make such a dark song for a game where Disney characters would be present, as Tetsu-san had ordered. It’s been a long time since then. Time really goes by too fast (laughs).

And after 11 years, the game was beautifully remastered in HD. At first, I was going to leave the original pieces as is. However, I thought it wasn't the right thing to do, since the graphics would become so beautiful (at the time, since the game specifications didn't support streaming, I was making do with little memory to play the songs.

So, that’s what I thought. I pressured myself to do the right thing.

Above everything, it was in HD! I though not to care about storing capacities! (not that it’s ok to completely ignore that). Since it is a streaming reproduction I can play at my best be it an orchestra, piano or guitar. I wanted to do that. I really, really wanted to. Of course I had an affective attachment to the original sound sources whose sound waves I compressed the most I could, put all together like a puzzle and had a really hard time tuning. But I wanted people to play the game with an even better music! That was the natural flow. Then, starting with Mr. Kawashima, who has helped me countless times, I consulted the Sound Members. And finally, I managed to do it! Almost all soundtracks, newly recorded!

Actually, I thought it was nearly impossible to do it. But the the help and enthusiasm from the people around me was outstanding. They often told me “Let’s make an amazing work!”, “You better be prepared, Shimomura-san!” Oh boy…

The thing we most treasured was not to disappoint the fans out there who liked the old music. Unexpectedly, when doing music for games, you’re told a lot things like “hmmm, you shouldn’t have done a musical arrangement.” In order for that not to happen, I really treated the original soundtracks with utmost care while recording them anew.

So, how did it pay off? We, the Kingdom Hearts Sound Team have made it with a lot of passion. 11 years’ worth of feelings, along with what we want and need to do from here on. We deliver you this Soundtrack with all of these filled in it.

All the people who have assisted me in the production of 1.5’s music, the instrumentalists and you, who’s acquired this CD. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Now then, once upon a time, when the tempestuous production of Kingdom Hearts –HD 1.5 ReMIX- was becoming nothing more than a good memory, I receive a call from the magnificent key person of Kingdom Hearts Sound Team: Mr. Kawamori. Ahh, I knew this day was coming. Yes, this day!!

More than anticipation, I was kind already waiting for the blow (laughs). If there is a 1.5, then of course there should be a 2.5, right? But 2.5 has so much music. What am I going to do?? Hmmm, well, let’s think of about when it happens. Yes, only then.

…and that “then” was finally upon me.

The newly recorded music for 1.5 became so popular and I received so many requests to make a Soundtrack. In truth, the circumstances in which we did 1.5’s music were, in various meanings, reckless challenges. So, if that was well received, then, if work on 2.5 started, we’d make it be even better received and it would be easier to make. That’s what I believed. And I was told “you’re recording ALL the music anew, right?” as if it was obvious (laughs).Well, I wanted to but… I did want to do it, but… Somewhere inside me I was like “Ohhhhhh, right….” (laughs).

Don’t get me wrong. I’m really happy. Really really happy!!! …This job is really hard, you know (laughs).

But if I decide I’ll do something, I’ll see it to the end! First I had to decide which instrument of which music should be recorded again. (Including all the different versions, it was more than 100 soundtracks). Well, how should I say it? For example, while cleaning the room I would find really nostalgic stuff and stop working or while throwing manga away I’d starting reading here and there… That situation. “Oh, this is so nostalgic, oh yeah, I remember this one and what we did back then.” I listened to the soundtracks while remembering these kinds of things and when it was over, my Excel list was still empty! Hey, hey, get to work, me!

The most earnest part was that VGO, who was responsible for the musical performance in LIGHTNING RETURNS, offered help. There’s quite a distance from Boston to Tokyo, but nowadays one can be in Tokyo and record in Boston! The advance of technology is amazing. But the recording would start at midnight. I felt the time difference being in Japan. Can’t technology do something about that too? (Laughs)

Well then, even though I had more flexibility than in 1.5, I and the Kingdom Hearts Sound Team made the new Soundtracks thinking about making you who play the games happy. I’d be happy if you enjoy the music that links to KHIII.

All the people who have assisted me in the production of 2.5’s music, the instrumentalists and you, who’s acquired this CD. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

  23. Tai Yasue reveals Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 & 2.5 ReMIX could come to PlayStation 4 & Xbox One

Tai Yasue, the co-director of the Kingdom Hearts series has revealed in an interview with IGN that the Kingdom Hearts HD collections, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX could be ported to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the future. Yasue mentions he understands what the fans want and that it is something they will explore but they also don't want to delay Kingdom Hearts III's development. You can read what Yasue said in full below. IGN has announced they will have more with Yasue later in the week.

"When we first came up with the idea for Kingdom Hearts III, it was always 1.5, then 2.5 and we were always thinking about those three titles at the same time," he explains. "I think [putting the games on PS4] is something we’ll explore. We understand what our players want, so we will explore the possibility. I’m not making any announcements though, we can’t make any announcements yet!"

But while Sony gamers would likely appreciate the refresher, with Kingdom Hearts III heading to Xbox One as well as PS4, arguably it's Xbox owners that need the earlier installments of the game more than anyone else. When asked about whether an Xbox One edition of 1.5 and 2.5 could ever see the light of day, Yasue was hesitant. While the initial reasoning behind this was thought to be the initial exclusivity deal with Sony, it seems resources play just as much of a part.

"It’s a big old question," he says. "There’s a lot of things we need to think of when we consider consoles. One of them is what our players want, so we will definitely consider that. But there’s also schedule constraints, as we really don’t want the development of Kingdom Hearts III going later, so we have that to think about. We’ll consider all these things and come to a decision."
