At the Disney Interactive event at D23 Expo 2015, Kingdom Hearts had the spotlight where there were some exciting announcements made by Square Enix that can be found here.

Jimmy Pitaro, president of Disney Interactive, started off the presentation by stating that the franchise of Kingdom Hearts has sold over 21 million copies world-wide. This pushes Kingdom Hearts from 80th place to at least 70th place on the Wikia page for video game franchise sales.

The Kingdom Hearts series began with its release in 2002. Over the past 13 years it has grown into series that is dearly beloved by fans. It has also created a better bond between Disney and Square Enix over the years which is proven by Disney's continued and increased support.

  4. Comicbook.com interviews John Vignocchi, VP of production for Disney Infinity - "Hopefully this leads to us doing more."

In an interview with Comicbook.com, John Vignocchi, the vice president of production for Disney Infinity, claims that he hopes the recent inclusion of Kingdom Hearts in Disney Infinity 3.0 "leads to more".

Vignocchi: Hopefully this leads to us doing more. We've had a lot of fun doing it, and I love Kingdom Hearts, so that's the goal.

In the interview, Vignocchi also reveals that the inclusion of Kingdom Hearts in Disney Infinity has been planned for quite some time:

Vignocchi: Everyone keeps asking me about Kingdom Hearts. I've been alluding to a passion project that I've been working on for some time, and that's what this is. We have had this planned out for about 8 months, with a lot of back and forth with our partners at Square-Enix.

Also, as if that wasn't enough, he made a series of tweets that could further suggest a larger role for Kingdom Hearts in Disney Infinity.

Take these tweets with a grain of salt, seeing as they neither confirm or deny more Kingdom Hearts in future versions of Disney Infinity, but the winky face and the caps-locked "LOL" imply a sarcastic remark.

Do you think Kingdom Hearts could be the focus of Disney Infinity 4.0? Do you even want more Kingdom Hearts in Disney Infinity? Let us know in the comments!

  6. KH13 Contest: Share your fan-art & win 2 copies of the Kingdom Hearts manga

Hey everyone! Today marks the first anniversary of the KH13 community’s involvement in the social media pages. Also, the Disney D23 Expo is just around the corner so to celebrate we have decided to have another competition. This will be a fan-art competition that will running for TWO weeks, and will give creative individuals the chance to win the two volumes of the first Kingdom Hearts manga (translated in English by Yen Press).

    Posted Image

To enter the competition you must create a fan-art which envisions what you’d like to see in Kingdom Hearts III. Throwing ideas out, this can mean multiple things like:

    • Summons (characters or the newly announced attraction flow rides),
    • Keyblade Transformations (weapons or gliders like in Birth by Sleep)
    • Character Outfits (other characters’ outfits, drive forms, armour like in Birth by Sleep, or for different worlds)
Your fan-art must fall into one of the three categories (listed above) and it must be created specifically for this competition. Read on for more details.

    How to enter:
    • Upload your fanart to KH13 (either to the Fan-made Images gallery, or by making a new topic somewhere), and then put a link to your fan-art in the comments below so that we can find it easily.
    • Fan-art must be related to Kingdom Hearts, fall into one of 3 categories above and it must be created specifically for the competition. You can enter multiple times if you want to increase your chances.
    • At midnight EDT on August 27th, 2015, our team will deliberate and decide on our favourite fan-art submitted, contact the winner of the contest, and send them their copy of the first two Kingdom Hearts manga! This contest is open to everyone as long as the manga can be shipped to their location via Amazon, etc.
Good luck to everyone! Even if you don't win, there is still a chance we will feature your fan-art on the KH13 Community Twitter and the KH13 Tumblr. Above all, have fun!

  7. KH13.com interviews VGO CEO/Producer, Shota Nakama

I was given the honour of interviewing the CEO/Producer of VGO - Video Game Orchestra, Shota Nakama on behalf of KH13.com. VGO is a combined orchestra and rock band that performs contemporary arrangements of video game music. They're located in Boston, United States where they have in recent years recorded the soundtracks for Square Enix games, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX and now Final Fantasy XV. I asked him about how he started working with Square Enix, what its like playing the games after working on their soundtracks, differences between working on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII's and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX's soundtrack, what its like working with Masashi Hamauzu, the lead composer of the Final Fantasy XIII series and Yoko Shimomura, the composer of the Kingdom Hearts series and more. You can read the entire interview below. Big thanks to VGO for making this happen.

Sora96: Firstly, how did you first start working with Square Enix? How did you get the honour of working on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII's soundtrack?

Shota: Masashi Hamauzu and I became good friends after our first encounter back in 2012. VGO had an opportunity to perform with his project, Imeruat, at a large anime convention over in Chicago called Anime Central. We had such a great time there performing, talking about our life and everything. Shortly after, he called me saying if I want to work on “that”, which I had no idea what it was about. Of course I said yes just like I do to pretty much everything. That is how the collaboration began, and that was the first time I worked with SQEX.

By the way, I must mention that Masashi Hamauzu is one of the very few gifted composers in the video game industry who writes music at such a high level of artistry. His music is just at a different level and I truly love his works.

Sora96: During the development of Lightning Returns did you work with all 3 composers or just Masashi Hamauzu?

Shota: We did not work with the other two although I got to meet both of them during some production meetings over in SQEX.

Sora96: How do you communicate with the composers with the language barrier? Do you have translators working at your studio or do Square Enix have theirs work with you?

Shota: As my name kind of implies, I was born and raised in Japan. Being bilingual both in English and Japanese really did help. We do have an assistant, Maho Azuma, who is native in both languages and also a diehard video game fan, helping out sessions too.

Sora96: What was it like working on Lightning Returns' soundtrack? Were you daunted at all by the prospect of working on such a massive franchise? Or were you simply excited by working on it?

Shota: When something new comes up, it is always exciting regardless of what the project is. For that particular gig, yes personally I was more excited because it is Final Fantasy that I played so much when I was a kid.

Sora96: Was it much different working on Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX's soundtrack than Lightning Returns'? What were some similarities or differences?

Shota: The working method itself was not that different, but there were several differences between those projects such as the instrumentation and how we managed the entire production. By the time we did KH2.5, we knew what not to do so everything went a lot smoother.

Sora96: Do you get to meet directors or producers of the titles you're working on? Eg. Motomu Toriyama or Yoshinori Kitase for Lightning Returns or Tai Yasue for HD 2.5 ReMIX?

Shota: I actually did not get to meet them. I am sure they were all busy trying to complete the games. Maybe someday!

Sora96: What's it like playing the games after working on the soundtrack?

Shota: It is a pure glory. Every scene that played our music made me smile and reminded me great moments while we were in the production.

Sora96: What are your favourite Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games?

Shota: Final Fantasy 6 is the best one of all to me. The story is so dark and there is pure evil guy who is unforgettable. I actually played the game in real time (I am an old school) and leveled everyone up way too much. The mighty Kefka was defeated in 3 turns after many 9,999 damages.

My favorite Kingdom Hearts was the second one, but now it is 2.5 because of the story and music.

Sora96: What's the best part of getting to work with Square Enix on such amazing titles?

Shota: I was a huge Squaresoft and Enix fan when I was a teenager. I can tell you that I played most of their games that came out in the 90s… the Dragon Quest series, FF series, Front Mission, Live a Live, Hanjuku Hero, and so many others. It is such an honor to be a part of their history.

Sora96: After working with legendary composers like Masashi Hamauzu and Yoko Shimomura have your admiration of them raised to new heights?

Shota: Definitely. Shimomura-san is so amazing at creating beautiful melodies especially when she writes a piano piece. Hamauzu-san always denies it when I say it yet he is truly a gifted composer. I love his music and I don’t know how he can come up with something so dynamic but delicate and sophisticated.

Sora96: What are your favourite Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts songs? Blinded by Light is a particular favourite of mine and I loved your recent performance you uploaded to YouTube of it.

Shota: Thanks for your kind words! I have always loved their epic battle music such as Blinded by Light and Big Bridge in Final Fantasy. For Kingdom Hearts, The Other Promise is the best one for me. The Shimomura-ness really shines there.

Sora96: If a new entry in the Final Fantasy X series were to be created would you like to work on its soundtrack?

Shota: I would love to. I don’t think anyone can decline an FF project.

Sora96: What are you most excited for in Final Fantasy XV?

Shota: The gameplay and music. The gameplay is just so different from the past numbering titles, and I am looking forward to see some innovative ideas in that. For the music, I cannot wait to listen to Shimomura-san unleashing her inner musical genius-ness. Music really does dictate the emotional expression of video games (and films and anime too) and it sometimes is more important than having the best graphics. I am really looking forward to the game.

  22. Final Symphony producer says they'll "definitely think about" a Kingdom Hearts-themed Final Symphony

In an interview with the Square Enix Japan Community Manager at Square Enix Europe, Dan Seto, the producer of the Final Symphony concert and album Thomas Böcker says that they will "definitely think about" doing a Kingdom Hearts-themed Final Symphony.

Final Symphony is a concert and now even an album that features features music from the Final Fantasy series. This is recorded and performed by the world famous London Symphony Orchestra in Abbey Road, London. The Final Fantasy series is the first ever video game to have music recorded or performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Masashi Hamauzu, one of the composers for Final Fantasy X and the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy has also been involved, arranging the songs alongside Jonne Valtonen and Roger Wanamo, and the arranged works are based on compositions by him and Nobuo Uematsu, the composer of many Final Fantasy games, who acts as a consultant for the concerts and album.

You can read the full quote below of what Thomas Böcker, the producer said in response to doing a Kingdom Hearts-themed Final Symphony. Would you like to see a Kingdom Hearts-themed Final Symphony? Let us know in the comments below.

“Yeah that would be quite the job but why not? We’ll definitely think about it,” Thomas teases. “It takes us about a year to do a new concert so it’ll take a lot of planning. I think we’re crazy coming up with all these new ideas for concerts. Nobody else does it to this extent!”

  25. Concept art for Disney's cancelled iOS/Android Kingdom Hearts game revealed, including Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Tangled & Star Wars worlds

Yesterday, we discovered that Disney was developing a Kingdom Hearts title for iOS and Android in 2013 called Kingdom Hearts: Fragmented Keys, which has since been cancelled. Today, we've found out via Philip Cruden's LinkedIn page that the company Go For Launch Productions, also known as GFL Animation Studios, were in charge of creating locations and character designs for Disney Interactive's upcoming Kingdom Hearts online game between September 2011 and March 2013.

The official website for GFL Animation Studios has two pages about their work for Disney Interactive and Kingdom Hearts, and these pages contain a huge amount of information, as well as over 100 pieces of concept art for the cancelled title. The two pages are titled "Disney Kingdom Hearts" and "Kingdom Hearts App Game", and together seem to show a very rough, initial concept for GFL's vision of Disney Interactive's Kingdom Hearts game.

The game was to have "several Kingdom Hearts heroes" (these seem to be original characters) transported to Disney worlds through a Grand Central like station, where they would join forces with the heroes of those worlds in battle arenas to defeat their enemies. These worlds included ones based on Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Snow White, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Lilo and Stitch, Star Wars, Tron and Tangled, all represented in the concept art for the game. An original town was also created called "New Town". All concept art can be seen below, originally sourced from the GFL Animation Studios website.

    - Original concept art
    - Game Hubs concept art
    - Aladdin concept art
    - Alice in Wonderland concept art
    - Peter Pan concept art
    - Snow White concept art
    - New Town concept art
    - Wreck It Ralph concept art
    - Frozen concept art
    - Lilo & Stitch concept art
    - Star Wars concept art
    - Tron concept art
    - Tangled concept art

It is unclear if all of these worlds made it past the concept/design stage that GFL Animation Studios were working on, but it is clear that Disney Interactive were working with GFL on this concept art for their upcoming Kingdom Hearts app, and that game designers and Disney executives from both the United States and Japan were all involved.

Here are the full descriptions for the concept art:

The concepts for this game was to have several Kingdom Hearts heroes transported to the worlds of our favorite Disney Characters. Traveling through a Grand Central like station our heroes could visit any Disney world of their choosing and join forces with the heroes of those worlds to defeat their enemies. Below is a collection of concept and game play design work. We also created “World Tour” video that introduced the Kingdom Hearts characters to the Disney worlds and culminated in a game play simulation battle on the rooftops of Peter Pan’s London, England. The video formed a large part of a video presentation given to Disney US and Disney Japan executives.

Go For Launch Productions, in association with CgMations in Ireland, designed numerous characters and sets for Disney’s new Kingdom Hearts game. The concept was simple; bring the beloved Kingdom Hearts’ characters into the iconic worlds of Disney. The characters of Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Lilo and Stitch, Star Wars, Tron, Tangled and more, were all to do battle with the Kingdom Hearts heroes against epic foes! On this project we re-imagined the classic Disney worlds as game play battle arenas and worked with the game designers to create fun and challenging game play scenarios.

[Here] is a selection of concept and game play design work.

Update: We've got twenty more concept art images showing battles on London rooftops, most likely from Neverland. You can view them here. Thanks go to KH13 member Roxasman1231 for the tip.
