  1. Kingdom Hearts III opening theme listed on ASCAP

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) recently listed on their website a song which goes by the name "Face my Fears", also known as "OPENING THEME (KINGDOM HEARTS 3)". The website also credits Utada Hikaru, Skrillex and Boyd Jason "Poo Bear" as writers.

Both "Chikai" and "Don't Think Twice" are also listed on ASCAP as Kingdom Hearts III's ending themes.

It is also interesting to notice how Skrillex already expressed his interest towards the Kingdom Hearts videogame in the past, but he also shown his appreciation for Utada Hikaru's work on his Twitter handle:

The booth also displayed the fully colored Nomura's artwork for Kingdom Hearts' 15th Anniversary, which was originally a monocromatic version. 13. Nomura stresses the importance of direct translations on story comprehension, and talks about world development as well as the Gummi Ship

In a recent interview with Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura, conducted by Everyeye.it, Nomura spoke about the tone of Kingdom Hearts III as well as whether clothes will have an effect on the gameplay.

Nomura also addressed why there are only English and Japanese dubs available for Kingdom Hearts III, how the selection of worlds are decided and expanded on the Gummi Ship portion of the game.

You can read about this below:

Everyeye.it: It seems that every world is able to embody a different style and type of gameplay. Mount Olympus, Rapunzel’s forest and the Monsters, Inc. Factory show great verticality and ample spaces, in Toy Story everything seems focused on freedom of action (even driving mecha-style toys), in the Arendelle distances can be covered by speed-travel skiing with Goofy’s shield; in Pirates of the Caribbean, finally, we will have naval battles and underwater explorations. Talk to us about the process of creating each world and how you've come to translate these Disney realities into gameplay.

Nomura: For this chapter, the development team put a large number of ideas on paper. Starting from the flow of proposals received from all the staff, I then added my personal ideas to ensure that the concepts achieved a certain [degree of] completeness. This does not mean that the ideas of the other developers didn't play an important role; indeed, when, originally, we began to select the worlds that we would have put [in the game], I personally asked each one of them to propose to me a presentation illustrating how each world should be played. The final selection, which of course rewarded the best ideas, of which Disney realities would be part of the final game took place on the basis of this criterion.
Everyeye.it: Let's talk about the Gummi Ship. From the videos shown so far it seems to be the only feature that has not been particularly revolutionized. Can we expect any surprises, in this sense? How much space will this feature have?

Nomura: In the first game, the Gummi Ship had a strong symbolic significance. In the second chapter [of the series], however, it ended up becoming a kind of amusement park attraction. This time, however, the space in which you can move the spaceship will seem much more expanded and very similar to the map of a role-playing game. Clearly we have added some customization options and re-proposed the shooting sections, which make the Gummi Ship what it is. But we also introduced a number of new elements thanks to a specific section of the development team that worked on it. Basically, the element of exploration is now much deeper.

Everyeye.it: Regarding the localization, what are the times and the difficulties of the adaptation and translation of a work such as Kingdom Hearts 3, which collaborates closely with local franchises (Final Fantasy) and with a Western brand as important as Disney and the attached animation brands?

Nomura: The biggest challenge is not so much the differences between the Kingdom Hearts franchise and other brands. When I direct a game, I ask for translations to be as direct and faithful as possible, no matter how complex the subject is. This implies the question of which of the two localizations (Japanese or English) is the best. The truth is that, especially for Kingdom Hearts, an incorrect or defective translation risks compromising the comprehension of the whole story, and this is why I care about it so much. On the other side of the scale, however, I also understand the dynamics that characterize the team's approach to the location of the game, which are quite complicated. After all, it is not an issue I can deal with firsthand, therefore I prefer leaving dealing with this problems to others.

Thank you to KH13's Aquaberry for the translations!

What do you think of the new information Nomura has given? Let us know in the comments below!

  14. "Kingdom Hearts III could even tear out more laughter than in the past", says Nomura; comments on costume design and states outfits will not affect gameplay this time around

A new interview with Kingdom Hearts series director, Tetsuya Nomura, has surfaced from Everyeye.it. The interview spoke about the tone of Kingdom Hearts III, Nomura's character design process and how outfits will affect the gameplay.

You can read the interview below:

Everyeye.it: KH3 will be, according to your statements, the darkest chapter of the saga, which will put Sora and the other protagonists in several dramatic moments. The series, however, is not completely new to large doses of pathos, so how are these statements reflected in the script? And, compared to the past, how difficult was the writing between the darkest introspection of the heroes and a plot that must draw the sums of a ten years old franchise?

Nomura: The battle against Xehanort, which came to life in the first game of the series, will finally come to an end; moreover, since the journey Sora is traveling serves to alleviate the pain of having lost his friends in the past, the general atmosphere will be truly dramatic, at least in some phases, compared to the previous chapters. In actuality, I think the Kingdom Hearts 3 plot will not really be that grim after all. Neither the relationships between the characters, whether between the main ones or between the protagonists of the various worlds, nor the journey of Sora alongside Donald Duck and Goofy will be particularly dark. In fact, I will tell you: it could even tear out more laughter [in the audience] than in the past! In this sense, therefore, we could say that it will be a truly wide-ranging story, well balanced between the dramaturgical aspect and the comic one.

Everyeye.it: One of the predominant elements of the aesthetics of Kingdom Hearts are the clothes, real kingpins in the character design of each character and capable of amalgamating the cartoon style with that of Final Fantasy. How did you conceive the new character designs? What were the inspirations towards their realization?

Nomura: Actually, I almost never get much from the character design process. Most of the time I find myself buying so many clothes that I like, I try them on and they inspire me. And indeed, there have been occasions, in the past, when I used some clothes I had bought for myself as character designs for some characters. A rather exhaustive example will be found in Kingdom Hearts 3 and concerns the look that Sora will have in the world of Pirates of the Caribbean: the design of his buccaneer jacket, in fact, is inspired by one of my coats!

Everyeye.it: Even in previous games, clothes became a playful excuse to give life to the Drive Forms which, in terms of gameplay, gave enormous variety to the combat system and to the playful experience. Will we find the same manic attention to the use of clothing in Kingdom Hearts 3?

Nomura: No, this time the clothes of the protagonists will have no effect on the gameplay or on the combat phases, but the type of battle that you can manage will depend exclusively on the use of the Keyblades. The form they will take is the very representation of this novelty and will have no direct effect on the characters.

You can find the full interview here.

Thank you to KH13's Aquaberry for the translations!

  16. Kingdom Hearts III featured on IGN Live during Gamescom 2018; Hidden Mickeys, world-specific boss reveals and more discussed

During Gamescom 2018, Sunil Godhania, Square Enix Europe's community manager, went on IGN's Live Developer Playthrough to show off the Toy Box demo for Kingdom Hearts III.

Besides giving us a good look at Kingdom Hearts III's gameplay, Sunil also talked about some new details about the game.

Sunil started out by talking about the Toy Box world and the fact that this was the first title in the series on Xbox.

Every Kingdom Hearts game can be a jumping in point for everyone. I'd say to anyone that's potentially worried about that, please just play the game, get into it, and I think you'll find a lot you'll love about it.

After showing off the transformation for the Tangled Keyblade, Mirage Staff, Sunil commented on the number of Keyblade transformations in the game.

I've seen at least two (transformations) per Keyblade so far.

Sunil also commented on world-specific bosses and whether we'll find out about them before launch.

Things like that we're going to keep very very secret and wrapped up until the game launches.

When using a Gigas for the first time, Sunil commented on the number of tutorials and user accessibility.

Whenever you enter a new minigame in Kingdom Hearts, you'll always get a short tutorial just to let you know how to play, because the game features so many different ways of playing. This is basically a first-person shooter now, which is completely different to what we've been seeing.

One of the most exciting bits of information from this interview came when Sunil went into detail about the purpose of Hidden Mickeys within the game.

If you can see, there's actually a Hidden Mickey in the background on the wall. Those are another mini-game throughout Kingdom Hearts III, you have to try and find all of those in each world. There may be some prizes.

The demo then ended after the battle against the Gigas, with Sunil finishing up by talking about how excited he and Square Enix are about finally releasing Kingdom Hearts III.

You can watch the IGN Live Developer Playthrough video below.

  19. Interview: KH13 Interviews the Italian Kingdom Hearts YouTuber, Everglow, on His Most Recent Project Kingdom Hearts Timeline

Everglow, the man behind the Kingdom Hearts Timeline, sat down with KH13’s Yoshirai and Xionskeyblade for an exclusive interview! Everglow started his project in April, and since then it’s been receiving much attention from the Kingdom Hearts community. Everglow was twelve years old when he first became a fan of Kingdom Hearts.

“I saw these Disney characters fighting alongside this cheerful kid with a giant key in his hands and giant shoes on his feet. The moment I saw all that unusual stuff on that video game magazine, I told myself ‘this must be mine!’. Probably the greatest decision of my life.”

    Posted Image

Everglow’s decision to create the Kingdom Hearts Timeline sprouted when the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX Collection was announced for the PS4. Since Kingdom Hearts III’s release was approaching, he wanted to do something special to commemorate the game.

I always wondered what would look like playing the games following their exact order of the events. Of course, the saga has been built throughout the years and all the flashbacks/callbacks we see dislocated in the various titles are there for a proper reason. This project is more of an alternative way to re-experience the whole saga and what I actually discovered is that you do, indeed, have a different feeling when watching it. It lets you see things with a different eye and you actually get references that wouldn't be caught otherwise. I'm pretty proud of the result so far!”

While working on this project, Everglow explained to us that piecing the timeline together revealed a few Kingdom Hearts elements that he previously didn’t recognize.

When working on the ending parts of both KH1 and 0.2, I was so focused on delivering the best idea of continuity that I actually had to analyze every single moment and what the characters were saying. Thanks to that, I fully understood the reasons behind the urgency of closing the door to Kingdom Hearts which wasn't, IMO, well explained in the first title. It also gave me a better perception of Mickey and how efficient his plan was. The 358/2 Days portions are being synced with Chain of Memories right now as we speak, and I'm watching the Organization plans with different eyes, now. I managed to understand how members like Zexion, Axel and Saix do have something to hide, and I think most of the fans have forgotten about that. Also, I had a better perception of something else happening towards the end of 0.2, related to Terra and Aqua. I'm not gonna say what it is, yet, but thanks to KH Timeline I managed to figure in my head a very important element of the story which is essential to the lore.”

All projects have their challenges. Everglow’s challenge was trying to sync battles maintaining the same music without breaking the flow.

The console titles of Kingdom Hearts never had an option to disable background music, and music is the most important element when switching multiple characters' perspectives. If you're listening to a certain music while playing as Terra, you must find a workaround to switch to Ventus without risking to break the flow. Therefore, the greatest challenge was working on the Keyblade Graveyard battles in Birth by Sleep and the final bosses in KH1 and 0.2. I did find a workaround for them and I'm pretty happy about how the Keyblade Graveyard episode turned out, but the KH1 and 0.2 final battles have been a real challenge, requiring a lot of time and dedication. I can't wait for you to watch it, it's really entertaining. Also, the x/Back Cover/Union Cross parts weren't easy to deal with, especially if you realize that's what people are most confused about and are desperately looking for some explanations. Can't really blame them, some story elements of the x saga have been told pretty badly, so watching them in the right order is really refreshing.”

We asked for his reactions to Aqua’s reveal as one of Xehanort’s vessels. After all, the Kingdom Hearts III trailer released at E3 this year.

I think the game explicitly wants you to feel more empathy towards Aqua, rather than her friends. After all, she's the only one you keep playing with and her endless research for a way to save her friends does have an impact on the player. On a side note of your question, I may also point out how the KH Timeline project kind of lets you feel even more Aqua's suffering, as she's basically been there the longest by now, way before than Sora. Therefore, you still care about her and, at first, you see Sora as a "stranger"? Not sure how to explain, but it's something I noticed when working on the KH1 episodes. The way I fragmented Aqua's story (pun intended!) gives us a different perception of her fate. We've never forgotten about her–instead, we've been alongside her for more than 30 episodes by now. As for the greatest climax throughout the whole saga... it's hard to say. But the moment I read your question I had a flash of Master Xehanort first speech after he took over Terra's body. That camera angle and his smile hit me real hard when I played that part the first time, listening to the speech we all know by memory from KH1 final battle, and when Rage Awakened started to play, the same music you learned to both love and hate because of that "Enigmatic Soldier" we all struggled to defeat a few years earlier... yes, that's probably the moment that had the greatest impact on me.”

    Posted Image

His favorite episode so far in the timeline is Episode 30: Destiny Is Never Left To Chance.

Watching Terra, Ventus and Aqua fighting at the same time always gives chills, no matter how many times you watch it!”

Considering the amount of attention and growth the Kingdom Hearts franchise has had this year we asked Everglow what he had to say to all the new fans out there and his supporters!

For old fans, take the remaining months to re-live the saga for the grand finale. May it be through your own console or through this project of mine, take the most fun out of the few months ahead. To new fans, my first advice would be: don't be scared from the amount of titles you see around! Catching up with the series is easier than expected. They may haven't been presented the best way, but with the HD collections now out for a single console you have no excuses! Begin your own journey with Sora. After completing the HD collections, feel free to play the Nintendo DS versions of 358/2 Days and Re:coded for catching all the details missing in the HD movies. Having such a special game like Kingdom Hearts close to you is something that every gamer should experience.”
